How to Use OBS Media Sources for a 24/7 YouTube Classroom Stream

Set up a repeating classroom video or playlist in OBS, connect it to YouTube Live, and understand the testing and recovery a 24/7 stream needs.

For one repeating classroom video, add an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For a rotating set of videos, use VLC Video, create a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Those settings repeat playback; they do not guarantee that a computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube will stay online around the clock. Plan to test and monitor the stream, and arrange a way to recover if it stops.

Choose the OBS source that matches your classroom video

Need OBS source Loop control Dependency and visibility behavior
Repeat one local video Media Source Enable Loop in the source properties. No VLC dependency. Other properties can restart playback when the source becomes active, show nothing after playback ends, or close the file while inactive.
Repeat a playlist of files VLC Video Enable Loop Playlist; optionally choose whether to shuffle. VLC must be installed. OBS documents stop-when-hidden and restart-when-visible as the default visibility behavior.

OBS lists local video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide for supported media and source properties.

Set up one looping video with Media Source

  1. In OBS, select the scene that should show the classroom video. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Media Source.
  2. Name the source, then choose whether to add it as a new source or reuse an existing one. Select OK.
  3. In the source properties, select the local video file. Enable Loop so playback begins again when the file reaches the end.
  4. Decide how the source should behave when it is not visible. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if it should begin from the start whenever shown. Enable Show nothing when playback ends only if you want the source to become blank after it finishes. Enable Close file when inactive to unload the file while hidden; expect a short reload delay when the source is shown again.
  5. Click OK, then check the OBS preview and listen to the audio. Confirm the picture fits the scene and that the loop transition is suitable for the lesson.

For a stable, single-video scene, looping is the key setting. The other controls matter most when scenes change or the media source is hidden and shown again.

Set up a looping playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC before configuring the source. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC; otherwise, VLC Video may not appear in the source list.
  2. In the intended scene’s Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit version matches the OBS requirement.
  3. Create the playlist in the source properties and add the video files in the order you want them played.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Choose whether to enable shuffle; leave it off if lesson order matters.
  5. Review the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents stop-when-hidden and restart-when-visible as the default. If scene changes should not interrupt playback, plan the scene layout and source visibility accordingly.
  6. Confirm the playlist plays through and returns to the beginning as intended. Check audio levels and transitions before going live.

OBS explains scenes and sources in its Sources Guide. VLC Video is useful for a playlist; for a single file, Media Source avoids adding VLC as a dependency.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16. YouTube can change these requirements; check its live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and find its stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as password-like: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the stream details requested by OBS. Use the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. YouTube’s instructions are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
  4. Start with a private or unlisted test when appropriate. Check the OBS preview and YouTube Live Control Room preview, confirm the event’s audience and visibility settings, and verify that both video and audio are reaching YouTube before relying on the setup for a classroom.

What a 24/7 stream requires beyond looping

Looping controls what OBS plays; it does not keep the stream running by itself. An around-the-clock broadcast also depends on the computer staying powered, OBS continuing to operate, the network maintaining service, YouTube receiving the encoder feed, and someone being able to respond if one of those pieces fails. A crash, power interruption, or connectivity problem can stop the live output even if the source is set to loop.

  • Test the full path: run a supervised test before the classroom needs the stream. Check the stream in Live Control Room, not just the local OBS preview.
  • Allow upload headroom: YouTube advises that available upload bandwidth exceed the stream’s bitrate. Avoid planning at the connection’s maximum sustained upload rate.
  • Monitor sound and picture: confirm the media is still playing and that YouTube is receiving usable audio and video. A preview that worked at launch does not prove it will remain healthy for 24 hours.
  • Make a recovery plan: decide who checks the stream and how they will restart OBS or reconnect the encoder if service is interrupted. YouTube notes that connectivity disruptions can break a stream; its streaming tips cover testing and network preparation.

Do not assume a 24-hour stream becomes one complete replay

YouTube’s encoder guidance states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete archive. If students need an on-demand replay, test the exact workflow and check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before depending on it.
