To stream from OBS Studio to YouTube, make sure your channel is eligible for live streaming, create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream key into OBS, set up your scene and audio, then test the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room before going live. OBS and YouTube do not require expensive equipment, but your settings must fit both your computer and your actual upload capacity.

Before you set up OBS, check YouTube Live eligibility

YouTube says a channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old to live stream. Check that live streaming is available for your channel before spending time configuring OBS. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements; rules and account interfaces can change.

Connect OBS Studio to a YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream. The Live Control Room provides the stream key and stream URL for your encoder. Follow the current controls in YouTube’s encoder-stream setup guidance.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube from the service list, and enter the stream key from the Live Control Room. OBS documents this service-and-key connection in its streaming overview.
  3. Keep the stream key private. YouTube treats it like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and replace the old key in OBS.

The key connects OBS’s output to the selected YouTube stream; it is not a viewer-facing link. Confirm you have selected the event you intend to broadcast before starting OBS output.

Build a scene for your game or presentation

A scene is the composition viewers see; its sources can include a game, display or window capture, webcam, images, and text overlays. Start with the minimum sources needed, then arrange them in the OBS preview. Source order matters: sources higher in the list can cover sources below them, and hidden sources do not appear to viewers.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. If OBS does not show the setup wizard on first launch, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. Follow its prompts for streaming and let it suggest a starting configuration. OBS says the wizard optimises settings for your needs, but its result is a starting point, not proof that your particular scene and connection are stable. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
  2. Create a scene in the Scenes panel and add the sources it needs. Use display or window capture for a presentation, game capture where supported for gameplay, or a Video Capture Source for a webcam or capture card. Add image or text sources only if you need overlays.
  3. For a webcam, add a Video Capture Source, select the intended camera, and resize or position it in the preview. You can apply a filter such as Chroma Key if appropriate; OBS outlines the camera source workflow in its FAQ.
  4. Check visibility and layering in the Sources list. Make sure a full-screen capture is not hiding a webcam or overlay that should sit above it.

A webcam, dedicated microphone, or capture card is optional, not a prerequisite. Begin with devices you already have and add equipment only to solve a specific quality or compatibility need.

Set audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

Check audio before choosing output settings

Speak into the microphone and play any desktop audio you intend to include while watching the OBS Audio Mixer. The meters should move for the intended sources, and those sources should not be muted. If a meter stays still, open Settings → Audio and select the correct microphone or desktop-audio device. OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes checking audio as part of setup.

Choose a resolution and frame rate your setup can sustain

In Settings → Video, Base (Canvas) Resolution controls the scene layout, while Output (Scaled) Resolution controls the resolution encoded for the stream. Choose an output resolution and frame rate based on the source, your upload bandwidth, and the computer’s performance. Sixty frames per second can be more demanding than 30; a detailed scene, demanding game, or older hardware may call for a lower setting. OBS’s system requirements guidance explains that performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as a range, not a universal preset

For YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance, H.264, CBR, and a two-second keyframe frequency are recommended; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrate ranges are:

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate range
720p at 30 fps 3–8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3–8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5–14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6–17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that your computer or connection can sustain the top of a range. In Settings → Output, set streaming output to a suitable bitrate and encoder; use the wizard as a starting point, then test. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and documents the current codec and bitrate guidance on its live encoder settings page. Recheck that page when configuring a stream because platform recommendations can change.

Leave upload headroom

Run a speed test on the same connection the streaming computer will use. YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity at least 20% above the total stream bitrate. Other people or devices using the connection reduce the capacity available to OBS, so do not treat the headline speed of a plan as guaranteed streaming bandwidth. If the connection cannot maintain the chosen bitrate with headroom, lower the bitrate or output resolution and test again. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Test the full production before going live

  1. Start a test stream or choose a private or unlisted event where appropriate.
  2. Show representative movement, such as actual gameplay or a presentation, and speak or play the audio you plan to broadcast.
  3. Watch the OBS preview and Audio Mixer. Confirm that the picture is correctly framed and every intended audio meter responds.
  4. Open the YouTube Live Control Room preview and check stream health messages before inviting viewers or treating the event as live.
  5. If you change resolution, frame rate, bitrate, scenes, or audio devices, run another test with the new production settings.

OBS strongly encourages a test lasting a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first broadcast. YouTube likewise advises testing and monitoring stream health. See the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube live-streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common OBS-to-YouTube problems

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm live streaming is enabled for your channel, the intended event is active, OBS is set to the YouTube service, and the key is correct. If you exposed the key, reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
  • The webcam is missing: Check that a Video Capture Source exists, is enabled, uses the intended camera, and is visible above sources that might cover it. Reposition or resize it in the preview.
  • There is no microphone or desktop audio: Check the OBS Audio Mixer for meter activity and mute status. Then verify the selected devices in Settings → Audio.
  • Frames drop or the stream is unstable: Compare the stream bitrate with a fresh upload-speed result and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. If needed, reduce bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate and test again.
  • CPU or GPU load is high: Simplify the scene or lower output resolution or frame rate. Hardware encoding may move work away from the CPU, but its availability and results depend on your hardware generation and drivers; do not switch encoders blindly. Consult OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs a prerecorded video or playlist to loop continuously, StreamNeo is a different option from a live OBS production: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and nothing has to stay running on your computer or home connection. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
