Pin a short orientation message in YouTube Live Chat so people joining at any point can understand the devotional stream and find the channel’s current guidance. During a live stream or Premiere, open a chat message’s More menu and select Pin. Only the creator can pin, and YouTube allows one pinned message at a time.
What a pinned message can—and cannot—do
A pinned message stays at the top of YouTube Live Chat as a signpost for viewers using the stream’s watch page. YouTube Help says, “You can only pin one message at a time.” Pinning another message replaces the current one. YouTube also says, “Only you, not your moderators or viewers, can pin messages.” The creator can pin their own message or a viewer’s message. YouTube’s computer instructions for Live Chat explain these permissions.
A pinned chat message is not a universal notice over the video. YouTube says Live Chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. Put essential orientation in the stream description or another stable channel page as well, so viewers watching an embed can find it. YouTube’s live-stream guidance covers chat availability.
How to pin, replace, or remove a message
Pin a message during a live stream or Premiere
- Open the stream’s Live Chat window on a computer.
- Find the message you want to keep visible. It may be a message you posted or one posted by a viewer.
- Open the message’s More menu and select Pin.
The creator must perform the pin. A moderator can help manage chat, but cannot pin a message on the creator’s behalf.

Replace or unpin it
- To replace the pinned message, open the More menu on the new message and select Pin. It takes the single pin slot.
- To remove a pin without replacing it, open the More menu on the pinned message and select Unpin.
What to put in a devotional stream’s pin
Write for someone who has just arrived and may not have heard an introduction. Keep the message short, plain, and useful without relying on a host’s recent spoken remarks. A strong message typically identifies the devotional, sets a respectful participation expectation, and points to the channel’s approved place for schedules or prayer-request guidance.
For example, adapt this wording to match what your channel actually offers: “Welcome to our devotional stream. Please keep chat respectful. See the channel description for the schedule and prayer-request guidance.” This is a practical copy suggestion, not wording required by YouTube.

- Use one priority: With only one pinned slot, put the most useful live instruction there. Keep a full schedule, community guidelines, and detailed prayer-request instructions in the description or on a stable channel page.
- Be precise about requests: If prayer requests are welcome, explain where to submit them and how the channel handles them. Do not promise an individual will see or answer one immediately unless the channel can reliably do that.
- Keep it current: Update the pin when schedules or participation instructions change. A live-chat pin is a signpost, not a replacement for updating durable channel information.
- Make it accessible: Prefer direct wording over unexplained abbreviations or symbol-heavy text.
Chat limits and moderation to keep in mind
YouTube’s viewer guidance says viewers can send up to 11 chat messages every 30 seconds, and each message can contain up to 200 characters. Those figures describe viewer-side chat messages; they are not a stated character limit for a creator’s pinned message. The same guidance says special characters, URLs, and HTML tags are not allowed in Live Chat. See YouTube’s live-stream viewer guidance.
For a busy or sensitive chat, the channel can appoint trusted moderators and use moderation controls such as held potentially inappropriate messages, blocked words, subscriber-only chat, and slow mode.
