Build a returning audience by making videos for a clearly defined group, choosing platforms for a specific purpose, and improving from repeated viewer responses—not by chasing a supposed algorithm trick. Start with one audience and one repeatable promise, publish at a pace you can sustain, then judge which topics and formats bring the right people back.
Start with a specific audience and a repeatable promise
Define who you want to reach and what they come to you for. For a gaming account, that might be first-time players learning a difficult game, players looking for concise build advice, or fans following one studio’s releases. “People who like games” is too broad to guide useful choices; a defined audience helps you choose examples, language, and topics.
Give viewers a reason to watch another video. A recurring format—such as a weekly beginner tip, a short explanation of one patch change, or a series comparing game mechanics—makes the next relevant video easy to recognize. YouTube says recommendations respond to what people watch, skip, search for, and signal through likes or dislikes, and that relevance and performance for an audience matter. Its guidance is: “focus on knowing your audience.” YouTube’s performance FAQ describes the system as finding videos for viewers, rather than promoting videos to an audience.
Choose platforms by the job you need done
There is no established universal winner for every creator. Decide whether your immediate goal is discovery, conversation and sharing, or room for longer explanations and search-based viewing. Then test the platform that best fits your format and audience, using your own repeated results to make the call.

The Metricool figures are an industry publisher’s cross-account analysis, not a controlled experiment or a promise of typical results. Its account-size findings also vary: for accounts with 100,000–1 million followers, it reported 93,000 views per TikTok video, about 2.6 times YouTube Shorts in that band. Use a benchmark to choose what to test, not to declare a platform best for everyone. Read Metricool’s 2026 short-form analysis.
A separate HubSpot survey of more than 1,000 social media marketers found that 28% named Instagram best for site traffic, 25% for engagement, and 23% for audience growth in its 2025 report. Make the opening clear, then deliver what it promises
In the opening, identify the game, question, or problem and make the payoff understandable. A viewer deciding whether to stay should not have to guess whether the video is a boss strategy, a patch explanation, or a review. Then deliver the promised information without detours that delay the answer.
There is no source-established ideal hook formula, video length, or retention threshold that applies to every account. Avoid misleading titles and thumbnails: YouTube advises creators to represent the video accurately and warns against deceptive or clickbait framing. A clear promise is useful only if the video fulfills it.

Set a sustainable posting rhythm
Choose a schedule that lets you make videos worth watching and keep it long enough to evaluate a pattern. YouTube says its analyses found no correlation between the time between uploads and growth in views across uploads; daily or weekly posting is not a universal requirement for YouTube growth. That guidance is specific to YouTube, and does not establish the ideal cadence on other platforms.
Rather than treating one unusually successful or weak post as a verdict, compare several videos with similar goals. If a faster schedule reduces clarity, usefulness, or your ability to respond to viewers, it may not serve the audience you are trying to build. YouTube’s guidance favors sustainable quality over an arbitrary upload interval.

Measure whether viewers respond and return
Views show reach, but they do not tell you by themselves whether you are building the audience you want. Review a small set of measures that match your goal, and look for repeated patterns across posts rather than one-off spikes.
- Reach: views or people reached, to see whether the video is being discovered.
- Attention: retention and watch time, to see where viewers stay or leave. YouTube says relative watch time is more important broadly for short videos, while absolute watch time matters more for longer videos.
- Interaction: comments and shares, especially when conversation or recommendations are part of your goal.
- Audience development: returning viewers, subscriptions or follows, and profile visits where available.
- Outcome: a goal-specific action, such as a click to a game guide or a visit to a community page, if that is genuinely what the account is for.
Use the platform’s analytics to compare videos serving the same purpose. If a useful guide receives attention but few viewers return, try a related follow-up or a clearer series format. If people leave early, check whether the opening states the right payoff and whether the video gets to it. These are hypotheses to test with your own audience, not guaranteed fixes. YouTube’s retention analytics guidance can help creators understand how long viewers are willing to watch.

Use short and long videos deliberately
Short-form clips can make a topic easy to sample; longer videos can provide context, examples, and fuller explanations. Decide what each format is supposed to do, and check whether people who watch one format actually move to the other or return for more.
Do not assume that adding Shorts will automatically increase long-form views. A 2024 observational study examined 250 prominent YouTube creators, each with at least 100,000 subscribers and at least eight short-form and eight long-form uploads. It reported an average per-channel decrease of 743,589 long-form views after the first Shorts video and a Wilcoxon signed-rank p-value of 0.011 in the overall comparison. The result is an association in a selected sample, not proof that Shorts caused a decline for all creators; the study concerns established channels and content through 2023. Read the 2024 study.
For a gaming channel, a short clip might introduce one mechanic, while a longer video gives the full build or strategy. Make the connection explicit when the longer video is a useful next step, then use analytics to see whether viewers take it. If the formats attract different people, that is useful information for planning—not proof that one format has failed.
A practical cycle for improving your videos
- Choose one audience and need. Name the type of viewer and the question or interest the video serves.
- Pick a platform role. Decide whether this post is meant to reach new viewers, encourage interaction, or provide a longer explanation.
- Make a clear promise. Use an accurate title and opening, then deliver the payoff promptly.
- Publish at a pace you can sustain. Do not add volume at the cost of usefulness or consistency you can maintain.
- Review comparable posts. Check reach, retention or watch time, interactions, and signs of returning viewers in native analytics.
- Change one meaningful thing at a time. Try a different topic angle, opening, format, or platform role, then compare a run of posts rather than drawing a conclusion from one.
- Build on demonstrated audience interest. Make a related follow-up or continue the series when repeated response supports it.
