The easiest way to use the Sound BlasterX G6 with a PS5 is through USB. Connect the G6 to the console, plug your headphones or headset into the G6, then select USB Headset (Sound BlasterX G6) as the PS5’s output and microphone device. For USB-only audio, set Output to Headphones to All Audio.

The PS5 has no optical audio output. If you specifically want the G6’s GameVoice Mix controls or optical-input features, you need an HDMI-to-optical converter in addition to the USB connection.

What you need

USB-only setup

  • Sound BlasterX G6
  • A compatible USB data cable
  • Headphones or a 3.5-mm headset
  • Optional: a separate microphone

GameVoice Mix setup

For GameVoice Mix, add an HDMI-to-optical converter with an HDMI input, HDMI pass-through/output, and optical/SPDIF output. You will also need an additional HDMI cable and an optical cable. The converter and extra HDMI cable are not included with the G6’s GameVoice Mix setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not buy an optical cable expecting to connect it directly to the PS5: the console does not have an optical-out port.

Recommended method: connect the G6 by USB

1. Connect the hardware

  1. Connect the G6 to a PS5 USB-A port with the USB cable.
  2. Plug your headphones or headset into the G6’s headset port, not the DualSense controller.
  3. If you use a separate microphone, connect it to the G6’s dedicated microphone input.
  4. Set the G6’s gain switch to L for headphones rated from 16 to 149 ohms, or H for headphones rated from 150 to 600 ohms. Do not use H automatically; high gain can increase noise and make sensitive headphones harder to control.

The G6 supports headphones in the 16–600-ohm range. Its dedicated microphone input takes precedence over the microphone in a four-pole headset connection.

2. Select the G6 for game audio

  1. Open Settings on the PS5.
  2. Go to Sound > Audio Output.
  3. Set Output Device to USB Headset (Sound BlasterX G6).
  4. Set Output to Headphones to All Audio.

This sends game audio and voice chat to the headphones connected to the G6. If the exact device name differs slightly, select the USB headset entry identifying the Sound Blaster device.

3. Select the G6 microphone

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  2. Set Input Device to USB Headset (Sound BlasterX G6).
  3. Select Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally.
  4. Raise or lower the level until the meter responds clearly without clipping.

Test the microphone in a PS5 party chat. Also check the headset’s inline mute switch and any physical mute control on the microphone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Set the G6’s listening volume

Use the large G6 volume knob to control playback volume. The knob changes its function temporarily when you enter sidetone mode, so check that you are adjusting the correct level if the volume seems unexpectedly low.

PS5 3D Audio versus G6 processing

Do not begin by enabling every surround or spatial feature at once. The PS5 and G6 can both process headphone audio, and stacking effects may produce a hollow, exaggerated, or poorly positioned sound.

Mode Best starting point for Trade-off
PS5 3D Audio Players who want Sony’s console-level spatial processing Can conflict with G6 effects
G6 SBX Players who prefer Creative’s processing and physical controls May sound colored or artificial with some headsets
Scout Mode Games where you want emphasized audio cues Is not a neutral listening mode
Direct Mode A clean signal with minimal additional processing Disables G6 effects
Optical/GameVoice Mix Players who want hardware game/chat balancing Requires a converter and more complicated routing

Creative recommends turning off Enable 3D Audio for Headphones in the USB G6 setup to avoid processing conflicts. If you want to use PS5 3D Audio instead, keep the G6 neutral or use Direct Mode and compare the result. Sony’s 3D Audio controls are located under Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).

For a controlled comparison, test the same game with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. PS5 3D Audio enabled and G6 effects disabled.
  2. PS5 3D Audio disabled and G6 SBX enabled.
  3. Both processing systems disabled with Direct Mode or a neutral setting.

There is no universally best option for every headset, game, or listener.

Using the G6’s controls

  • Volume knob: Adjusts headphone playback volume. It does not adjust optical-output volume.
  • SBX button: Enables or disables the saved SBX profile. The G6 remembers one SBX profile.
  • Scout Mode/Direct Mode button: Switches the relevant configured processing mode.
  • Gain switch: Use L for 16–149-ohm headphones and H for 150–600-ohm headphones.
  • Headset port: Connect headphones or a headset here.
  • Microphone port: Connect a standalone microphone here. This input takes precedence over a headset microphone.

Using sidetone to hear your own voice

The G6 calls microphone monitoring Sidetone. It is not the same as game/chat mixing.

  1. Press and hold the G6 volume knob for about two seconds.
  2. When the indicator changes to the sidetone/microphone control state, turn the knob to set how loudly you hear your own voice.
  3. Press the knob to mute or unmute sidetone.

Sidetone is off by default. It only sends your microphone back to your own headphones; it does not balance game audio against party chat.

Using GameVoice Mix with PS5

GameVoice Mix requires a separate audio path. USB carries the G6’s power and chat connection, while optical carries game audio to the G6. Because the PS5 has no optical output, the optical signal must be extracted from HDMI.

G6 ── Headset

Connect the equipment

  1. Connect the PS5’s HDMI output to the converter’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect the converter’s HDMI output to the TV or monitor.
  3. Connect the converter’s optical output to the G6’s optical input.
  4. Keep the G6 connected to the PS5 by USB.
  5. Plug the headset into the G6.

Use Creative’s GameVoice Mix settings

  1. Open Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  2. Set Input Device to USB Headset (Sound Blaster Device).
  3. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  4. Set Output Device to USB Headset (Sound Blaster Device).
  5. Set HDMI Device Type to AV Amplifier.
  6. Set AV Amplifier > Number of Channels to 5.1 Ch.
  7. Set Output to Headphones to Chat Audio.
  8. Under General > Audio Format (Priority), select Linear PCM or Dolby. Creative recommends Linear PCM for better game/chat-mixing optimization.

The difference between All Audio and Chat Audio is important:

  • USB-only: use All Audio, because the G6 receives both game and chat through USB.
  • USB plus optical/GameVoice Mix: use Chat Audio, because game audio is routed through HDMI and optical while USB supplies chat.

Do not combine the settings from these two configurations. Using Chat Audio in a USB-only setup can remove game audio from the G6; using All Audio in the optical GameVoice Mix setup can interfere with the intended routing.

Once the signal is working, use the G6’s GameVoice Mix controls to adjust the relative game and chat levels. The exact behavior depends on the converter, selected audio format, game, and PS5 chat path.

Dolby Digital and virtual surround

The G6’s Dolby Digital decoding is associated with its optical input. USB-only PS5 audio should not be described as sending Dolby Digital to the G6 for optical decoding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To use the G6’s optical Dolby path with a PS5, the console’s HDMI signal must first be converted to optical. That adds hardware and possible compatibility problems, and it is separate from the simple USB setup.

Likewise, “7.1” on the G6 refers to virtual processing rather than a headset containing seven discrete physical speaker channels. The result depends on the signal path, processing mode, headset, game, and listener.

Troubleshooting

No sound through the headphones

  1. Confirm that the G6’s power indicator is lit.
  2. Make sure the headset is plugged into the G6 rather than the DualSense controller.
  3. Reopen Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  4. Re-select USB Headset (Sound BlasterX G6).
  5. For USB-only audio, set Output to Headphones to All Audio.
  6. Turn up the G6 volume knob.
  7. Check the gain switch if the volume is unusually low.
  8. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable.
  9. Try another PS5 USB port.
  10. Restart the PS5 with the G6 connected.

For GameVoice Mix, verify the HDMI and optical routing and use Chat Audio rather than importing the USB-only All Audio setting.

The microphone is not detected

  1. Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  2. Select USB Headset (Sound BlasterX G6) as the input device.
  3. Check the headset’s inline mute switch.
  4. If using a standalone microphone, confirm that it is plugged into the G6 microphone port.
  5. Run Adjust Microphone Level.
  6. Test in a PS5 party chat.

Muting sidetone only stops you hearing your own voice locally; it does not necessarily mute the microphone sent to the PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Friends hear an echo

  • Use headphones through the G6 only and mute the TV or monitor speakers.
  • Do not connect the headset to both the controller and the G6.
  • Select only the G6 as the PS5 input device.
  • Disable sidetone temporarily to determine whether you are mistaking local monitoring for an echo.
  • Lower the microphone level if the signal is clipping or overly sensitive.

Game audio works but chat does not

  • Confirm the G6 is selected under Microphone > Input Device.
  • For USB-only, use Output to Headphones > All Audio.
  • Check that the game’s voice-chat feature is enabled.
  • Test a PS5 party chat separately from the game’s own chat.
  • For GameVoice Mix, confirm that USB is connected and Output to Headphones is set to Chat Audio.

Chat works but game audio does not

For USB-only, re-select the G6 under Audio Output, choose All Audio, and raise the G6 volume.

For GameVoice Mix, check that:

  • The HDMI-to-optical converter is powered.
  • The PS5 is connected to the converter’s HDMI input.
  • The TV or monitor is connected to the converter’s HDMI output.
  • The optical cable runs from the converter’s optical output to the G6’s optical input.
  • The converter supports the selected PS5 audio format.
  • Linear PCM works before testing Dolby.

Audio is too quiet

  • Confirm that the G6 knob is controlling playback rather than sidetone.
  • Check the PS5 headphone volume and the headset’s inline volume control.
  • Use H gain only for headphones that need it, particularly higher-impedance models.
  • Do not treat H as an automatic quality upgrade; it can increase noise and reduce usable volume range with sensitive headphones.

Audio sounds doubled, hollow, or overly processed

  1. Disable PS5 3D Audio if using G6 SBX or Scout Mode, following Creative’s recommended USB setup.
  2. Alternatively, leave PS5 3D Audio enabled and use Direct Mode or a neutral G6 profile.
  3. Disable surround modes on the TV, monitor, soundbar, or converter.
  4. Test again with SBX disabled.

The optical input is not detected

Confirm that the converter is receiving the PS5 HDMI signal, passing video to the display, and outputting a supported digital audio format. Re-seat both ends of the optical cable and test Linear PCM before Dolby. An optical cable alone cannot solve the problem if the PS5 is connected directly to the G6 without an HDMI-to-optical converter.

Do you need a computer?

No computer is required for the basic PS5 USB setup. A PC may be useful for firmware updates, profiles, EQ, or Creative configuration tools, but the basic console connection can work without making a PC part of the signal path. For current firmware and software details, check Creative’s G6 support page, since software names and support materials can change.
