Streamlabs’ AI Game Highlighter is now called Replay. For automatic highlights, enable Auto Record in Replay, install its Recorder Extension if prompted, and launch a supported game. If you want to choose moments yourself while streaming in Streamlabs Desktop, use its Highlighter tab to set a hotkey and replay duration, then press the hotkey when you want a clip.
Replay and Highlighter: what changed?
Streamlabs uses the name Replay for its AI game-highlighting feature, formerly called Streamlabs Highlighter. The older Streamlabs Desktop help workflow still documents manual clipping in a Highlighter tab; Replay’s newer workflow focuses on automatic background recording and event-based highlights. Names and menus may vary by app version, so follow the labels shown in your installed build. Streamlabs’ product page identifies Replay as formerly Highlighter.
Choose automatic or manual capture
| Workflow | How moments are captured | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Replay Auto Record | Replay records gameplay and identifies events such as kills or eliminations, deaths, victories, and defeats. Automatic detection depends on the game being supported. | You want the app to find candidate moments for you. |
| Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter | You choose when to save a moment by pressing a configured hotkey; set the replay duration beforehand. | You want to decide exactly when to clip, or your game is not supported for automatic event detection. |
Check Streamlabs’ current supported-games list before relying on automatic detection for a particular title. Streamlabs says the supported library is expanding; support for one game does not establish support for every game or every version.
Use Replay for automatic game highlights
- Install and open Replay. Download Replay from Streamlabs, launch it, and accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy when prompted.
- Enable Auto Record. Turn on Auto Record during setup. If Replay prompts you to install its Recorder Extension so it can record the screen, complete that installation.
- Activate recording. Choose Activate Auto Record and launch a supported game.
- Play, then review the captures. After your session, return to Replay to review recorded moments. The events it can detect depend on the game.
- Edit the video. Trim clips, rearrange them, and compile the moments you want to keep. Streamlabs’ Replay guide also describes importing existing footage or clips, adding subtitles or music, and preparing horizontal or vertical video.
- Export or share. Export the finished video, or use a sharing destination shown in your current app. Streamlabs’ guide mentions YouTube, Discord, and a phone, but available destinations can change; check Replay before planning around a particular one.
For the current Replay setup and editing walkthrough, see Streamlabs’ How to Use Replay guide.

Capture moments manually in Streamlabs Desktop
- Open Highlighter. In Streamlabs Desktop, select the Highlighter tab in the left navigation panel.
- Set your capture controls. Choose a hotkey and the replay duration—the length of the clip to save—before going live.
- Go live and press the hotkey. When a moment is worth keeping, press the configured key to capture it.
- Open the saved clips after your stream. Return to Highlighter to find the clips from the session.
- Edit the reel. You can adjust transition type and length; add an intro, outro, or background music; reorder clips; include or disable individual clips; delete clips; and trim them by adjusting their edges.
- Preview and export. Preview the compilation, make final edits, select Export, and choose the export settings.
- Upload the downloaded reel. Once the export finishes, upload it to the social platform you choose.
These are the steps documented in the Streamlabs Desktop Highlighter guide. If automatic event detection is unavailable for your game, this hotkey workflow gives you a manual way to mark moments.
Prepare the reel for its destination
- Choose the moments first. Remove clips you do not want and trim the edges so the compilation moves cleanly from one moment to the next.
- Match the format to where you will post. Replay’s guide describes horizontal and vertical edits. Choose the orientation that suits the intended destination, then check the final preview.
- Review audio and transitions. If you add background music, check that it works with the game audio and that the transitions do not cut off important action.
- Confirm the export and share options in the app. Export controls and direct destinations can vary over time, so rely on the options actually available in your installed version.
Common problems and fixes
Auto Record does not detect moments
First check whether the game appears on Streamlabs’ current supported-games list. Automatic detection is game-dependent, so an unsupported title may not produce event-based highlights. Use the Streamlabs Desktop hotkey workflow if it is available in your build and you want to capture moments manually.

Replay asks for the Recorder Extension
Complete the extension installation if you want to use the prompted screen-recording workflow, then return to Replay and choose Activate Auto Record. If the prompt or labels differ, consult the current Replay guide or the instructions in your app.
The manual hotkey does not save a clip
Before going live, confirm that you set a hotkey and replay duration in Highlighter. If the key conflicts with a game or another app, choose a different hotkey and try again. The Desktop guide documents setting both controls before capture.
