Short answer: Streamlink is not a documented, end-to-end encoder for broadcasting an ordinary gameplay video file to YouTube Live. It can extract supported streams and send received data to standard output, and its manual shows a generic pipe into FFmpeg. But that example is not a verified recipe for opening, pacing, encoding, and broadcasting any local recording. For a regular gameplay file, use an encoder that supports the file and YouTube output, or carefully test a Streamlink-to-FFmpeg pipeline with your exact format and software versions.
What Streamlink can—and cannot—do here
Streamlink is a command-line stream extraction and transport utility. Its documentation describes sending streams to an external player; it does not document Streamlink itself as a YouTube Live encoder. The Streamlink CLI documentation describes --stdout, which writes received stream data to standard output. The manual’s FFmpeg example demonstrates a general pattern for piping a supported stream into FFmpeg.
That distinction matters for gameplay recordings. A normal video file needs software that can open its container and codecs, play it at the intended rate, encode the outgoing video and audio, and send the result to YouTube. The documented Streamlink pipe pattern does not, by itself, establish all of those steps for an arbitrary local recording. Do not treat it as a ready-to-run command for your file.
What the local-file documentation establishes
Streamlink’s file protocol documentation shows how to use file:// with a local HLS playlist and says relative and absolute paths are supported. That example establishes support for the documented direct-stream protocol; it does not promise identical handling for ordinary gameplay formats such as MP4 or MKV.

Choose the appropriate route
- Ordinary recording: Use an encoder that can open your file, control playback pacing, encode compatible output, and publish to YouTube. Verify those capabilities for the encoder and version you install.
- Supported Streamlink input: If your input is a stream or protocol Streamlink recognizes, its stdout option can be part of a command-line pipeline. You still need an encoder configured to produce a compliant YouTube feed.
- Experimental local-file pipeline: Test Streamlink and FFmpeg together against a copy of your exact file and installed versions. The available documentation does not provide a universal, verified command for this use case.
Set up YouTube Live and connect an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the stream you want to broadcast. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance explains how to connect an encoder.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into the corresponding fields in your encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private: someone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, command example, or shell history.
- Configure the encoder for the file and YouTube’s current ingest recommendations (see the next section), then start the encoder.
- Check the incoming preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and select Go live when it is ready. End the broadcast from the encoder and/or Live Control Room as appropriate for your setup.
Encoder settings to check before going live
YouTube’s published encoder settings recommend RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. The page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency with a maximum of four seconds. It also lists bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate. Choose the row matching your intended output rather than assuming one bitrate suits every gameplay video or connection.
- Input and output: Confirm the encoder can open the recording’s container and video/audio codecs, then select a resolution and frame rate the source and your upload connection can sustain.
- Transport and video: Use RTMPS where supported; choose a video codec YouTube lists for encoder ingest, set CBR, and use the recommended keyframe interval.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s current table row for your chosen resolution and frame rate. The right setting depends on that output—not merely the game’s original recording settings.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps stereo audio. Confirm that audio is present in the Live Control Room preview before starting a scheduled broadcast.
- HDR: If you plan to send HDR, check YouTube’s current table and codec notes rather than assuming your encoder’s standard settings apply.
These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer, recording, encoder, or internet connection will sustain the selected output.

Using a Streamlink-to-FFmpeg pipe responsibly
Streamlink’s CLI documentation shows the general handoff idea: send a recognized stream to stdout, then connect that output to FFmpeg. This can be useful when Streamlink is handling a supported stream input. It is not a tested, complete local-gameplay-file-to-YouTube recipe, so a copied command would risk hiding important differences in input format, playback rate, encoding, and output settings.
Before adapting a pipeline, verify each stage independently: Streamlink recognizes the input, FFmpeg receives the expected data, the encoder paces playback as intended, and the final output uses YouTube-compatible transport and settings. Test with a non-public stream or an appropriate private workflow before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast. Never substitute a real stream key into a command that may be saved or shared.

Copyright, archives, and monetization considerations
Check rights to the recording and its audio
Recorded gameplay may include music, cutscenes, voice chat, or other material subject to rights or a game’s streaming policy. Confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast the recording, including embedded audio. YouTube’s copyright and monetization systems can affect a stream independently of whether the encoder connection works.
Understand the archive guidance
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat this as YouTube’s stated platform guidance, not a guarantee that streams of every duration or in every circumstance will be archived.

| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlink does not open the recording | The file may be an ordinary media file or use a format Streamlink’s documented local-file example does not establish as supported. | Confirm the input protocol and format against Streamlink’s documentation. For a regular recording, use an encoder that explicitly supports its container and codecs. |
| FFmpeg receives no usable input | The pipe’s source may not be a recognized Streamlink input, or the bytes may not be the media format FFmpeg expects. | Test Streamlink’s input separately, then inspect FFmpeg’s input handling with a copy of the file. Do not assume the generic stdout example guarantees compatibility. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The encoder may not be publishing to the selected stream, or its server URL, key, transport, or output settings may be wrong. | Recheck the selected stream’s server URL and key in Live Control Room and in the encoder; verify RTMPS and the encoder’s output status. |
| Preview appears, but the picture or sound is wrong | The chosen codec, output profile, frame rate, bitrate, or audio path may not match the source or desired output. | Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current settings and bitrate table. Confirm audio reaches the preview and lower the output target if the source or upload cannot sustain it. |
| Scheduled stream is not public | The incoming feed may be connected but the scheduled broadcast has not been started in Live Control Room. | Wait for YouTube’s preview, then select Go live for the scheduled broadcast. |
| Unexpected channel activity | The stream key may have been exposed or entered into the wrong encoder setup. | Keep the key private, verify the selected stream, and follow YouTube Studio’s current controls for managing the stream key. |
