You can use Switchboard Live to distribute a 24/7 YouTube stream, but Switchboard does not play or store your prerecorded videos. You need a separate encoder—such as OBS, Ecamm, or Switcher Studio—that can play the videos continuously and send its live output to the Switchboard workflow. Once Switchboard confirms it is receiving video, you can take the YouTube destination live.
How the setup works
Think of the setup as two connected jobs: the encoder handles video playout, and Switchboard Live distributes the incoming feed to YouTube. Switchboard’s FAQ says it does not store prerecorded videos. Upload or otherwise make your video available to an encoder that supports prerecorded playback, configure that encoder to send to the ingest endpoint shown in your Switchboard workflow, then connect YouTube as a destination.
The encoder examples named by Switchboard are OBS, Ecamm, and Switcher Studio. The right choice depends on whether it can play your files continuously and send video using the protocol and endpoint offered in your workflow. Do not assume that a particular encoder or account supports every available protocol: use the options actually displayed for your configured workflow.
Before you start
- Make sure you can sign in to the YouTube channel you intend to use and authorize it in Switchboard.
- Confirm that the channel is eligible to live stream and does not have a live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned start.
- Choose prerecorded video files that your encoder can play, and make sure the encoder can keep sending the feed for the intended run.
- Have access to the Switchboard Stream Group you will use and keep its stream key private. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to that workflow.
- Decide how you will preserve a recording if you need one. Switchboard says it does not archive the video, and YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours.
Set up the prerecorded YouTube stream
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube, follow the live-stream setup flow for your channel and complete any required verification or activation. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation before planning to go live.
- Choose and prepare the playout encoder. Set up OBS, Ecamm, Switcher Studio, or another encoder that supports prerecorded video playback. Load the video or playlist and configure it to play continuously as a live feed. Switchboard is not the file host or playback application, so the encoder—not Switchboard—must keep supplying the video.
- Connect the YouTube destination in Switchboard. In the relevant Stream Group, select Add Destinations, choose Connect More, select YouTube, and authorize the correct channel. Then enable that YouTube destination in the group. Check the selected channel carefully before continuing.
- Copy the ingest details from the Switchboard workflow. Open the workflow you will use and copy the ingest URL and stream key shown there into the encoder’s streaming settings. Select the protocol presented for that workflow. Switchboard’s FAQ identifies RTMP ingest; its workflow documentation also describes RTMPS and SRT as selectable options. Since the documentation differs in scope and accounts or encoders may expose different choices, follow the endpoint and protocol shown in your actual workflow rather than substituting one from another setup.
- Start the encoder’s video output and check receipt. Start the prerecorded playout so the encoder sends video to Switchboard. Wait until the Switchboard confidence monitor shows the incoming picture and the receiving status is active. The destination’s Go Live control is inactive until Switchboard detects incoming video.
- Take the YouTube destination live. In Switchboard, select the connected YouTube destination and press Go Live. If you plan to use a Stream Group’s Auto-Start setting, configure and test its behavior before relying on it for an unattended stream. Do not treat an untested automation setting as a substitute for verifying the feed and destination.
- Watch the stream and manage the recording separately. Check that the encoder continues playing and that the destination remains live. If you need a dependable replay, use shorter sessions or make a separate local recording; do not count on YouTube to archive one uninterrupted broadcast that runs beyond 12 hours.
Encoder settings and stream-key safety
The Switchboard workflow documentation calls for copying its displayed ingest URL and stream key into the encoder, but the available setup details do not establish one universal resolution, bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval for every encoder and workflow. Use the settings recommended by the encoder and the platform for the specific connection you are configuring; do not copy numeric settings from an unrelated workflow. Most importantly, confirm that the encoder is sending to the exact endpoint and protocol shown in Switchboard, then verify the picture in its confidence monitor before taking YouTube live.

Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it, show it on screen, or send it to people who do not need access. If you reset or replace the key, update the encoder with the new key before the next broadcast. A key change does not update the encoder automatically.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 stream?
Not reliably as one complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the full program matters, plan separate sessions shorter than 12 hours or record a local copy as a backup. Switchboard itself does not archive the video.

Copyright, reused videos, and monetization
Clear every element in the stream
YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to represent that it has the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable laws and YouTube guidelines. Check permissions for the video, music, images, and other included material before broadcasting it continuously. A video being available online or being prerecorded does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it.
Being live does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. The policy expects original and authentic content; mass-produced or repetitive material may be ineligible. Reused content needs meaningful original commentary, substantial changes, or educational or entertainment value, and YouTube may assess the channel as a whole. YouTube clarified its repetitious-content policy on July 15, 2025, and renamed it the inauthentic-content policy. Even when live-stream monetization is enabled, ad slots are not guaranteed to serve.

Common problems and what to check
- Go Live is inactive in Switchboard: Switchboard has not detected incoming video. Start the encoder’s output, confirm its ingest URL, protocol, and stream key match the active workflow, and wait for the confidence monitor to show a picture and active receiving status.
- The confidence monitor does not show the expected video: Check that the encoder is playing the intended file and sending to the endpoint shown in the workflow. Verify the selected protocol and key, then restart the encoder output if needed. Do not start the YouTube destination until the correct feed is visible.
- The YouTube destination is missing or belongs to the wrong channel: Return to the Stream Group’s destination controls, use Add Destinations and Connect More to authorize YouTube, and confirm that you selected the intended channel before enabling it.
- You cannot enable live streaming on the channel: Check YouTube’s eligibility and restriction requirements. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours; a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days can affect eligibility.
- The stream stops after a key reset: Replace the old stream key in the encoder with the key currently shown by the Switchboard workflow, then send video and confirm receipt again.
- You do not have a complete YouTube replay: A continuous session longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Use shorter sessions or record locally if a complete copy is important.
- Ads do not appear consistently: Enabled monetization does not guarantee that an ad slot will serve. Separately, repetitive or reused material may fail YouTube’s monetization rules even if the stream is technically live.
Dedicated hardware as another route
YouTube’s verified encoder listing names the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream functionality can schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. This is a dedicated-hardware option to investigate if you want scheduled playback without a computer. The available product information does not establish its current store availability or confirm that it integrates with Switchboard in the same workflow, so verify compatibility and the complete setup before buying it for this purpose.
