You can schedule a YouTube livestream through Switchboard Live’s Scheduled Events, or create the event in YouTube Studio and connect it to Switchboard with a Custom RTMP destination. In either workflow, sending video from your encoder is not always the final launch step: for a Switchboard Scheduled Event, you must also click Start Streaming when it becomes available.
Choose where to create the YouTube event

Both workflows are documented by Switchboard’s Scheduled Events guide and its Custom RTMP instructions. The sources do not establish that either workflow produces better audience outcomes.
Create and launch a Scheduled Event in Switchboard
Set up the event
- Open the workflow you want to use and create a Scheduled Event, or open the Events Page Manager and choose New Event.
- Enter an internal event name. If you start in the Events Page Manager, select the workflow for the event.
- Enter the public stream title and description, then set the start date and time.
- Add a thumbnail or use the default.
- Add the YouTube destination from your saved destinations, or connect a new YouTube destination. Switchboard’s guide says a scheduled event page is created for YouTube Partner Destinations as well.
Send video and launch
- At the event time, open the workflow’s Upcoming Events tab and start sending video from your encoder. Check that the workflow is receiving video.
- Switchboard’s guide says the event can be started 30 minutes before its scheduled time. When encoder video is present at that point, Start Streaming turns green.
- Click Start Streaming to launch all destinations in the event group. Sending the encoder feed only makes the workflow ready; it does not itself launch the event.
To end the event, click Stop Streaming in its header. Switchboard says the event is archived and removed from the workflow. For supported destinations, post-event analytics are available in the Events Page Manager.
Create the event in YouTube Studio and connect it to Switchboard
Use this separate, manually configured path when the YouTube event already exists or you specifically want to attach Switchboard to that event’s stream credentials.

- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create and schedule the livestream, then open the event.
- Copy the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key.
- In Switchboard, add a Custom RTMP destination. Paste the Stream URL into the URL field and the Stream Key into the key field; do not swap them.
- When ready, send encoder video to Switchboard, select the Custom RTMP destination, and click Go Live.
Switchboard recommends creating a new stream key for the scheduled event to help ensure the feed attaches to that specific event. YouTube’s official live-streaming production guide also describes scheduling in YouTube Studio, copying the stream key into an encoder, and launching from the Live Control Room. It says scheduled streams can be discoverable in YouTube search and subscriber feeds, and potentially on the home page.
Enter event details in YouTube Studio
For a Custom RTMP destination, titles and descriptions entered in Switchboard do not transfer to the destination. Set the title, description, visibility, date, time, audience, and thumbnail in YouTube Studio.

Switchboard’s Custom RTMP instructions include an older statement that direct streaming to YouTube scheduled events is not supported. Its current Scheduled Events guide documents a separate Switchboard-managed event workflow. Treat these as two different setup paths rather than applying the older limitation to the newer feature.
Check the event before sharing or relying on a late start
- Confirm that the intended YouTube destination is attached to the intended event and that the correct workflow is receiving encoder video.
- If you remove YouTube from a Switchboard Scheduled Event, Switchboard says the public event page is permanently deleted. Links already shared for that destination will break, and viewers who selected Notify Me will lose that event subscription.
- Switchboard’s September 3, 2025 launch article described a flexible start window of up to six hours after the scheduled time and said an event expired if it was not started within six hours. The current support guide does not repeat that late-start rule. Check the current dashboard or Switchboard support guidance before depending on the six-hour window.
Troubleshoot common launch problems
Start Streaming is unavailable or the workflow is not ready
Check that your encoder is sending video to the selected workflow and that Switchboard is receiving it. For a Scheduled Event, receiving video is a readiness step; the operator still has to click Start Streaming.

The stream schedules instead of going live
Switchboard’s FAQ identifies a missing stream title in the active template as a possible cause. Stop the stream, update the YouTube title in the designated field, then follow Switchboard’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
The Custom RTMP feed does not attach to the intended event
Check that the event’s Stream URL and Stream Key were copied into their corresponding Custom RTMP fields. If needed, use a new key created for that scheduled event, as Switchboard recommends.

The event details shown on YouTube are wrong or missing
When using Custom RTMP, enter the title and description in YouTube Studio, not just Switchboard. Switchboard says those details do not push to Custom RTMP destinations.
