How to Use systemd to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Playlist Stream Running on Ubuntu

Use systemd to supervise an FFmpeg YouTube playlist stream on Ubuntu, with an intentional restart policy, log checks, recovery test, and YouTube verification.

Use a system-level systemd service to start FFmpeg at boot and restart its process when it exits unexpectedly. That supervises FFmpeg, not the whole broadcast: you still need to validate the playlist, confirm that YouTube is ingesting the stream, and check the live event in YouTube Live Control Room.

This guide uses an illustrative service configuration. Verify directive behavior against the systemd.service manual installed on your Ubuntu release before deploying it, and never put a real stream key in a publicly readable unit file.

What systemd will—and will not—keep running

A system service can launch FFmpeg at boot, run it under a dedicated Linux account, and apply a restart policy if the FFmpeg process exits. You can inspect its state and output in the system journal. This is process supervision, not a check that viewers can watch the broadcast: systemd cannot fix an unreadable file, invalid playlist, expired or incorrect stream key, broken network connection, or a YouTube event that is no longer live.

Plan to check two independent signals: the service and journal on Ubuntu, and the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room.

Prepare the account, media, and FFmpeg build

Create a service account and readable media directory

Use a dedicated, non-interactive Linux account for the stream where practical. Make sure it can read the media files and any playlist file, and traverse every parent directory in their paths. Choose a stable directory such as /srv/youtube-playlist and set it as the service working directory. The account should have only the permissions it needs.

Confirm FFmpeg and its available protocols

Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate for your Ubuntu release, then inspect the executable that the service will run:

command -v ffmpeg
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -protocols

Available protocols depend on how FFmpeg was built. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes concat and concatf as ways to read multiple resources in sequence, but your installed build may not include every protocol. Check the local output rather than assuming support from another distribution or version. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

Choose and validate the playlist input

Decide how you will express the ordered inputs, then validate that exact input with the installed FFmpeg. Check the file order, paths, permissions, and whether the files have compatible stream parameters for your chosen approach. A playlist that works interactively under your own account may fail when read by the service account.

Do not move on until you can run the intended command in the foreground, see FFmpeg progress through the sequence, and confirm that YouTube receives it. Keep the stream key private; use your current YouTube stream URL and key rather than copying credentials into an example or public log.

Match the output to YouTube’s ingestion protocol

Set FFmpeg’s output to the protocol selected for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. RTMP and HLS are distinct configurations; HLS-specific requirements do not apply to an RTMP command.

If you select HLS

YouTube Help’s HLS setup calls for a YouTube HLS stream key and an HTTPS URL. It specifies MPEG-TS segments, segment durations from 1 to 4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than continuous RTMP ingestion because it sends segments. Consult the current YouTube HLS ingestion instructions for the exact setup and settings.

Do not copy an RTMP output command and assume it satisfies these HLS requirements. Confirm that your FFmpeg build and command can produce the selected output format.

Run the command in the foreground first

Before creating the service, run the exact FFmpeg command as the intended service account, from the intended working directory. Replace the placeholders below with your validated input and the current output settings from YouTube Live Control Room; do not put a real key in a published file or expose it in logs.

sudo -u STREAM_USER sh -c 'cd /srv/youtube-playlist && exec ffmpeg YOUR_VALIDATED_INPUT_OPTIONS -i YOUR_PLAYLIST_INPUT YOUR_YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_OPTIONS YOUR_CURRENT_YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL'

This is a command shape, not a ready-to-run FFmpeg recipe: the correct input and output options depend on your media and selected YouTube ingestion protocol. Confirm that the playlist advances, FFmpeg remains running, and YouTube reports an incoming stream before making it a boot service.

Create an illustrative systemd service

Create a system-level unit, for example at /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service. The following illustrates the lifecycle settings and placeholders only; it does not provide a tested FFmpeg command or a secret-management mechanism. Validate the unit against the systemd.service manual on your Ubuntu release. Keep credentials out of a unit readable by others and out of journal output, using a secret-handling method appropriate to your host’s permissions model.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube playlist stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=STREAM_USER
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-playlist
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg YOUR_VALIDATED_INPUT_OPTIONS -i YOUR_PLAYLIST_INPUT YOUR_YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_OPTIONS YOUR_CURRENT_YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Choose the restart policy intentionally

Restart=on-failure expresses the intent to restart after an unsuccessful process exit rather than after every clean exit. A policy that also restarts after a clean exit has different behavior and may be appropriate for a command designed to terminate normally after work; do not choose it automatically for every stream. The illustrative RestartSec=10s adds a pause before a restart, instead of retrying immediately. Confirm the exact accepted values and behavior using the manual installed on your system.

Protect secrets and files

  • Do not substitute an actual stream key into a unit file that other users can read.
  • Check the permissions of the unit, playlist, media directory, and any credential material against the account and secret-handling method you use.
  • Avoid shell tracing or logging that prints credentials. Review service output before sharing journal excerpts.

Reload, enable, and start the service

  1. Reload unit files: run sudo systemctl daemon-reload after creating or editing the unit.
  2. Enable at boot and start now: run sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.service.
  3. Check process state: run systemctl status youtube-playlist.service. A running service means systemd sees the process as active; it does not prove YouTube is broadcasting it.
  4. Inspect recent logs: run sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -n 100 --no-pager. For live-following output, use sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -f.
  5. Verify the broadcast separately: check the incoming stream and event status in YouTube Live Control Room.

Test recovery and the full stream path

After confirming the service works, test process recovery in a planned maintenance window. Stop the FFmpeg process in a way that produces a failure exit, then check whether systemd starts it again after the configured delay. Review the journal for the exit and subsequent start, and confirm independently in Live Control Room that YouTube receives the stream again. A restart only demonstrates that systemd relaunched the process; it does not establish that the broadcast recovered successfully.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Service fails immediately: inspect systemctl status and the unit journal. Check the executable path, syntax, working directory, account name, and whether the service account can read the playlist and media.
  • FFmpeg reports an unknown or unavailable protocol: inspect ffmpeg -protocols for the same installed executable used by the service. The available list is build-dependent; adjust the input approach or use a build with the required support.
  • Playlist does not advance: run the input command in the foreground as the service account. Check ordering, exact paths, directory traversal permissions, and compatibility of the media streams with the selected sequence method.
  • FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no incoming stream: check the current stream key and URL, selected ingestion protocol, network access, and output settings. For HLS, compare the output with YouTube’s HTTPS, TS, segment-duration, rolling-playlist, and POST/PUT requirements.
  • Service is active but viewers do not see a live event: check YouTube Live Control Room. systemd reports process lifecycle, not the state of the YouTube event or the viewer-facing broadcast.
  • Stream stops after an update or reboot: inspect the journal and Ubuntu update behavior. Ubuntu Server documentation says that beginning with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, needrestart automatically restarts affected services by default after unattended upgrades; administrators can change the behavior or exclude a critical service. This is version-sensitive, so check the configuration on your release and plan to verify the stream after maintenance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the playlist to keep streaming without maintaining an Ubuntu host, StreamNeo runs an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams what you uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
