Use a systemd service with Restart=on-failure and a deliberate RestartSec delay to relaunch an encoder that exits unsuccessfully. This supervises the encoder process; it does not fix a bad YouTube stream key, a failed network connection, or an unhealthy audio/video feed. You still need to check the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd can start an encoder as a service and restart it when the process fails. The encoder must remain in the foreground as the service’s main process; if it daemonizes and exits, systemd may treat that exit as the end of the service rather than supervise the actual encoder.
- It can: relaunch a service after an unsuccessful exit, subject to its restart delay and start-rate limit.
- It cannot: repair the encoder command, replace an invalid stream key, restore an unavailable internet connection, or verify that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio.
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key into the encoder’s configuration. Treat the key like a credential: do not publish it in a unit file that other users can read, a public repository, or logs. If you reset the key, update the value used by the encoder.
Create a systemd service for the encoder
The following is an illustrative unit template, not a tested, copy-and-run encoder command. Replace the executable, arguments, working directory, service account, and secret handling with the values appropriate to your distribution and encoder. Keep the encoder running in the foreground.

Choose the restart policy and delay
Restart=on-failure restarts after unsuccessful exits and relevant service timeouts. It does not override an intentional systemctl stop or systemctl restart. RestartSec=5s in the example pauses five seconds before a retry; it is an example value, not a universal setting.
A short delay can cause repeated launches while a dependency remains unavailable. For failures likely to persist, choose a delay that gives the network or service time to recover, and consider whether the operator needs time to investigate. Newer systemd versions document optional stepped delay growth with RestartSteps= and RestartMaxDelaySec=, and jitter with RestartRandomizedDelaySec=. These directives are version-dependent; check the manual installed on your system before using them.

Set a suitable start-rate limit
The example’s StartLimitIntervalSec=60s and StartLimitBurst=5 are policy examples. The current upstream system manager documentation gives a default limit of 5 start attempts in 10 seconds, but unit settings and manager configuration can change the effective limit, and distributions may differ. The limit counts service start attempts, not livestream recoveries. Set it with the expected failure pattern in mind: a restrictive limit can stop retries during a prolonged outage, while an excessively permissive one can repeatedly launch a broken process.
Install, enable, and inspect the service
Save the unit in the system’s service-unit directory under a name such as youtube-livestream.service. The exact directory and administrative procedure vary by distribution. After creating or changing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service if it should start at boot, then start and inspect it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-livestream.service
systemctl status youtube-livestream.service
journalctl -u youtube-livestream.service
Use the status and journal output to see whether the service is active, how it exited, and whether systemd is retrying it. Avoid putting the stream key directly into a command line or unit file unless you have accounted for who can read it; use the encoder’s supported secret/configuration mechanism and appropriate file permissions.
Configure YouTube’s stream behavior separately
systemd controls the encoder process. YouTube’s Live Control Room has separate auto-start and auto-stop settings that govern whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. Check those settings for the event behavior you want. Restarting the process alone does not guarantee a particular audience-facing interruption, reconnection, or event lifecycle.

For a planned broadcast, test with representative audio and video. During the stream, monitor Live Control Room’s health indicator and messages. YouTube recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, the outbound network connection, and whether the encoder is up to date.

- The service exits immediately: confirm that
ExecStartpoints to the correct executable, that its arguments and configuration are valid, and that the service account can access required files. Run the encoder in the foreground so systemd can track it. - systemd keeps restarting it: inspect
systemctl status youtube-livestream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-livestream.servicefor the encoder’s error. A restart loop is a symptom to diagnose, not proof that the broadcast recovered. - Retries stop after repeated failures: check for a start-rate-limit message in the status or journal. Correct the underlying failure, then clear the failed state or start the service again as appropriate for your system.
- The process runs, but YouTube reports an encoder startup error: verify the server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says a new stream key may be needed for startup errors; if you reset it, copy the new key into the encoder configuration.
- YouTube reports poor or missing stream health: check encoder errors and CPU load, the outbound connection, and the audio/video feed. A live process does not guarantee a usable feed.
- The encoder starts or stops YouTube streaming differently than expected: review the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings in Live Control Room; those are separate from systemd’s restart policy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than supervising an encoder on Linux, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the upload streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
