In Minecraft Bedrock Edition, use /effect to give a target a status effect or remove one. For example, /effect @s speed 60 2 gives yourself Speed II for 60 seconds. Cheats are required, and this syntax is specific to Bedrock; do not assume it applies to Java Edition.
What you need before using /effect
Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference says /effect requires cheats and the Game Directors permission level. The command adds or clears status effects on a player or other valid target.

How to give a target an effect
Use this syntax in Bedrock:
/effect <player: target> <effect: Effect> [seconds: int] [amplifier: int] [hideParticles: Boolean]
Replace the target with a player name or target selector, and replace the effect with an accepted effect name. The optional arguments, in order, set the duration in seconds, amplifier, and whether particles are hidden. Microsoft documents defaults of 30 seconds, amplifier 0, and visible particles.

/effect @s speed 60 2gives yourself Speed II for 60 seconds./effect @s regeneration 10 3gives yourself Regeneration IV for 10 seconds./effect @e[type=zombie] weakness 30 1 truegives all zombies Weakness II for 30 seconds and hides particles./effect @a resistance 120 0gives all players Resistance I for 2 minutes.
These are examples from Microsoft’s Bedrock effect command reference.
How duration, amplifier, and particles work
- Duration: Enter an integer number of seconds after the effect name. For a longer effect, increase this value; if omitted, the documented default is 30 seconds.
- Amplifier: This controls the effect level. The command’s amplifier argument defaults to 0; Microsoft says sample values typically range from 0 to 4. The examples use 2 for Speed II and 3 for Regeneration IV.
- Particle visibility: Add
trueas the final argument to hide particles, as in the zombie Weakness example. The default isfalse, so particles are visible.
Keep the argument order intact: duration comes before amplifier, which comes before the particle setting. If you want to set a later optional argument, include the earlier arguments too.

How to remove one effect or all effects
The clear form is /effect <player: target> clear [effect: Effect]. To remove all effects from yourself, enter /effect @s clear. To remove only a particular effect, add its name after clear, for example /effect @s clear speed. You can replace @s with another player name or target selector.
Which effect names can you use?
The Bedrock reference includes names such as speed, slowness, haste, strength, instant_health, jump_boost, regeneration, resistance, fire_resistance, water_breathing, invisibility, night_vision, weakness, poison, slow_falling, village_hero, and darkness, among others. Names accepted by commands can depend on edition and game version, so check the reference for the version you play rather than treating this selection as exhaustive.

Why the command may not work
- Cheats are disabled: The command requires cheats according to Microsoft’s reference.
- You lack permission: The documented permission level is Game Directors.
- The edition differs: This syntax is for Minecraft Bedrock Edition, not a universal Minecraft command format.
- An argument is misplaced: Check that the target and effect come first, followed by duration, amplifier, and particle visibility in that order.
- An effect name is rejected: Verify the spelling and that the effect is supported in your edition and version.
