Many USB headsets work with PS4, but not every headphone with a USB plug does. The device must identify itself as a USB audio device the console supports, or its manufacturer must explicitly list PS4 compatibility. Wireless models normally connect through their included USB transmitter, not by pairing ordinary Bluetooth directly with the PS4.
Plug in the headset or transmitter, open Settings → Devices → Audio Devices, select it for input and output, then set Output to Headphones to All Audio for game sound and party chat.
Check what kind of USB headphones you have

A USB connector describes the plug, not the audio protocol. Proprietary wireless receivers, PC-only drivers and charging cables can all look like ordinary USB accessories while remaining unusable for PS4 audio.
Does PS4 support USB audio?
Yes—compatible USB headsets and wireless transmitters are supported. Sony’s headset documentation directs users to insert a wireless adaptor into a PS4 USB port and configure Output to Headphones. See the Gold Wireless Headset manual and Sony’s PS4 audio-output guide. This does not mean every USB headset, adapter or Bluetooth transmitter is compatible.

Connect a wired USB headset
- Turn on the PS4.
- Plug the headset directly into a PS4 USB port, without a hub or extension.
- Wait several seconds for the console to identify it.
- Open Settings → Devices → Audio Devices. Menu wording can vary by system-software version and region.
- Set Input Device to the headset microphone, if listed.
- Set Output Device to the USB headset.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio.
- Raise the headset’s physical volume and release any mute switch.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally. The level indicator should respond without staying at its maximum.
Connect a wireless USB headset
- Charge the headset.
- Insert its included wireless transmitter into a PS4 USB port. A USB-C receiver may need the supplied USB-A adapter.
- Turn on the headset and select its 2.4 GHz, USB or dongle mode rather than Bluetooth mode.
- Wait for the headset and transmitter to link.
- Use Settings → Devices → Audio Devices to select the transmitter for input and output.
- Set Output to Headphones → All Audio, then test the microphone.
Do not substitute a random receiver: wireless dongles are commonly model-specific. A USB-C plug alone does not establish PS4 support. For example, SteelSeries lists PS4 compatibility for the Arctis Nova 5P through its USB-C 2.4 GHz dongle, but states that PlayStation does not support ChatMix for that model.
Configure game audio, chat and the microphone
Game sound and party chat
Set Output to Headphones to All Audio for both game audio and voice chat. Chat Audio sends chat to the headset while game sound remains routed elsewhere. Sony documents these choices in its Platinum Wireless Headset manual.

Microphone input
- Choose the detected headset under Input Device.
- Use Adjust Microphone Level and speak at a normal volume.
- Turn off the headset’s physical mute switch and connect a detachable boom fully.
- Check party-chat mute controls separately from the headset button.
Sony’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance uses these microphone-level checks for controllers, headsets and USB microphones.

Game/chat balance
A game/chat wheel works only when the headset and PS4 expose the required channels. Some controls and software features are PC-only. SteelSeries specifically notes that PlayStation does not support ChatMix on the Nova 5P, even though the headset is PS4-compatible.

Test the connection
- Start a game and confirm that game audio reaches the headset.
- Create or join a party and speak while watching microphone activity.
- Verify the headset is not muted and its volume wheel is raised.
- If the headset has separate game/chat controls, move the balance and confirm both channels remain audible.
Fix “USB headset not detected”
- Unplug it and reconnect it directly to the console.
- Try the other PS4 USB port.
- Remove hubs, extension leads and unnecessary adapters.
- For wireless models, confirm that the receiver is the included PS4-compatible dongle and that the headset is in dongle mode.
- Turn the headset off and on.
- Restart the PS4 with the headset or transmitter already connected.
- Test the headset on a PC or another device that the manufacturer supports.
- Check the exact model’s PS4 compatibility and firmware requirements.
Sony warns that USB devices and hubs may not provide sufficient power in some circumstances, particularly while charging; direct connection is the better diagnostic test. See the Gold Wireless Headset manual.
Fix “The headset appears, but there is no sound”
- Set Output Device to the headset or its transmitter.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio.
- Raise the headset volume and check its mute switch.
- Confirm the game has not muted or reduced its own audio.
- Use USB/dongle mode, not Bluetooth mode.
- Re-seat the transmitter completely.
If only one channel is audible, inspect the game/chat balance and output selection. Sony’s wireless-headset troubleshooting page identifies unbalanced game and chat volume as a possible cause.

Fix “I hear game audio, but my microphone does not work”
- Select the headset under Input Device.
- Turn off physical and party-chat mute.
- Reconnect and position the microphone boom correctly.
- Check that the meter moves in Adjust Microphone Level.
- Verify that the transmitter supports microphone input on PS4, not merely audio playback.
Why the TV may still play—or stop playing—sound
PS4 routing determines where audio is sent. With All Audio directed to the headset, game sound may leave the TV. Simultaneous TV and headset output is not universal; it depends on the PS4 settings, headset and console behavior. Sony also notes limitations affecting simultaneous game and voice-chat audio in some combinations in its voice-chat support guidance.
What will not work as expected
- Charging-only USB cables: they supply power but carry no audio.
- PC-only USB headsets: they may require Windows drivers or a desktop application.
- Bluetooth-only headphones: ordinary direct Bluetooth pairing is not a reliable PS4 game-and-chat solution.
- Unsupported proprietary dongles: a receiver made for another model or platform may not enumerate as a PS4 audio device.
- PC software features: EQ, virtual surround, sidetone, firmware tools and ChatMix may be unavailable on PS4.
Headphones without a microphone can play PS4 audio, but they cannot provide voice chat through a microphone they do not have.

Practical alternatives
Use the DualShock 4’s 3.5 mm jack
A standard wired headset connected to the controller is often the simplest fallback when USB recognition fails. Sony’s PS4 FAQ documents headset use through the controller jack: PS4 Ultimate FAQ. The cable is shorter and the controller connection may offer fewer features than a dedicated USB interface.
Choose a headset with both USB and 3.5 mm
The HyperX Cloud III is an example whose manufacturer lists PS4 support alongside USB-A, USB-C and 3.5 mm connectivity. That combination gives you a wired fallback if the USB path is troublesome.
Buy a documented wireless model
Look for the exact PS4 model listing and an included transmitter. Logitech lists PS4 compatibility for its PRO X Wireless LIGHTSPEED; its DTS Headphone:X and related surround functions require Logitech G HUB on PC, so those features should not be assumed on PS4.

Optical bases, HDMI or USB audio extractors can solve particular setups, but they add power, cabling and compatibility variables. Optical output also depends on the PS4 model: the PS4 Slim does not have the optical output found on the original PS4 and PS4 Pro. Verify your console before buying such hardware.
Buying rule
The safest criterion is manufacturer-listed PS4 compatibility. For the least setup complexity, choose a PS4-compatible wired USB headset. For wireless play, choose a model with a PS4-compatible USB transmitter. Avoid generic Bluetooth transmitters, charging cables and replacement dongles that are not confirmed for your exact headset model.
