You can run Wirecast on a VPS and send its output to YouTube, but treat it as a deployment to validate—not a vendor-certified setup. Wirecast documents desktop operating systems and computer requirements, not VPS support. First confirm that the chosen virtual machine exposes a compatible Windows environment and can sustain the encoding workload and upload bandwidth; then test the complete stream before relying on it. If you need YouTube to save an archive, plan sessions shorter than 12 hours.
Can you use Wirecast on a VPS?
Wirecast has a YouTube output workflow, but the reviewed Wirecast documentation does not specifically certify virtual machines or VPS deployments. A Windows VPS is not automatically suitable: it may lack usable graphics acceleration, and its advertised vCPU count does not establish that it can encode your chosen video continuously in real time.
Wirecast’s published requirements list Windows 10 version 1809 or later and compatibility with Windows 11. The same page gives an 8 GB RAM minimum and a recommended/optimal target of 16+ GB, while warning that the minimum may not be enough for higher resolutions or 60 fps. These are desktop hardware baselines, not a guarantee of performance on a VPS. Check the current Wirecast hardware and technical specifications and confirm the selected host’s actual operating system, CPU, graphics device or encoder acceleration, and sustained network capacity.
Before paying for a long VPS term or configuring a 24/7 channel, run the intended resolution and frame rate on the actual machine. A short test that only shows the desktop or a static frame is not enough to establish reliable performance with your real video, movement, audio, and output duration.

What to check before installing
Channel access and live-stream eligibility
Make sure the YouTube channel can go live and that no channel restriction blocks the broadcast. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the day you plan to start. Use an account with the appropriate channel permissions for the connection method you choose.
VPS operating system and encoding capacity
- Confirm the VPS supplies a Windows edition supported by the Wirecast release you intend to install. Recheck the vendor requirements when selecting the machine; operating-system support can change between releases.
- Ask the provider whether the virtual machine exposes a usable GPU or hardware encoder. Wirecast lists Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA NVENC, and Apple H.264 among its hardware encoding options, but a VPS may not expose the corresponding device or acceleration to the guest operating system.
- Verify sustained CPU or GPU encoding at your target profile. Do not infer real-time performance from the number of vCPUs alone.
- Check available RAM, disk space for any local recording, provider limits on long-running workloads, and the terms for Windows licensing and traffic. The provider’s offer should say what is included; costs and restrictions vary.
Network capacity and firewall rules
Wirecast gives a planning baseline of total stream bitrate multiplied by two for required upload bandwidth. For example, a 10 Mbps output implies a 20 Mbps upload planning baseline under that rule. Test sustained outbound throughput from the VPS itself and leave room for variation rather than relying on the provider’s headline network speed. Check provider and firewall restrictions for the workflow you will actually use; do not open unrelated ports for features such as NDI, remote presenters, or capture devices if you are only sending a YouTube output.

How do I run Wirecast on a VPS?
- Provision and validate the VPS. Select an operating system supported by the Wirecast release, then verify its CPU/GPU, RAM, disk, outbound bandwidth, firewall policy, and provider rules. Install the operating-system updates and any provider-supported remote access components. Record the machine’s baseline CPU/GPU use and network performance.
- Install Wirecast and open a representative project. Install the release compatible with the VPS operating system. Load the actual media sources and audio you intend to stream. If the VM does not expose the expected hardware encoder, use an available encoding option only after testing its sustained performance.
- Connect the YouTube destination. Wirecast’s documented native route is to open Output Settings, choose YouTube, authenticate the Google account, and configure the stream. Wirecast says this integration handles the stream key and server routing. YouTube also supports a generic encoder route: copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup and enter them in the encoder’s corresponding fields. Exact labels can vary by Wirecast release, so follow the controls shown in your installed version.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or save it where other VPS users can access it. If it is exposed, the channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder connection.
- Set a conservative output profile. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that both the VPS encoder and its sustained upload can handle. Use the YouTube guidance below as a target range, not evidence that the VPS can deliver it.
- Run a full test before going continuous. Test with the real content, representative motion and audio, and the intended output profile. Watch the encoder’s dropped-frame or connection indications, host CPU/GPU use, and YouTube’s stream status and health messages in Live Control Room. Continue long enough to expose resource or connection problems that would not appear in a brief preview.
- Write down the operating procedure. Decide who checks alerts, how to verify the stream after a disconnect, how to reconnect or restart Wirecast, and how to confirm YouTube is receiving video again. Monitoring and a documented procedure are not automatic recovery.
Wirecast and YouTube settings to test
YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate, a recommended two-second keyframe interval, and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. Use the controls available in your Wirecast version and verify the outgoing settings before the stream starts. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into viewer formats, so the upload profile is not the same thing as a promise that every viewer receives that exact format.
| YouTube output target | Published H.264 bitrate guidance | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | Use only if the resulting quality and the VPS’s sustained encoding and upload performance suit your content. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | Test movement and sustained frame delivery; the bitrate figure does not establish VPS capacity. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Confirm the VM can encode continuously at this profile and has sufficient outbound headroom. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | Validate both the higher frame-rate encoding load and sustained network performance before relying on it. |
The listed bitrates are YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations, not Wirecast presets or a VPS sizing guide. For a first test, choose a lower profile that the machine can sustain, then increase resolution, frame rate, or bitrate one change at a time. If the machine or uplink struggles, reduce the profile rather than assuming a larger advertised vCPU count will fix it.

Can I stream to YouTube 24/7 with Wirecast?
Wirecast can send a continuous feed while the VPS, encoder, network connection, and YouTube ingest remain healthy. That is different from proving an unattended 24/7 service: the reviewed official material does not establish a universal Wirecast auto-restart setup for VPS failures. The stream can stop if Wirecast exits, the VM reboots, the provider has an outage, the network drops, or YouTube stops receiving the feed. Establish monitoring and an operator or restart/reconnect process before treating it as continuous.
Watch the actual stream, not just the VPS
Use YouTube Live Control Room to check stream status, health errors, and live metrics such as duration and concurrent viewers. During burn-in, also watch Wirecast’s connection and dropped-frame indications and the host’s CPU/GPU use. A healthy-looking VPS alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Plan archive segments separately from uptime
Will YouTube save a 24/7 live stream? YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour threshold concerns archive capture, not whether the VPS can keep sending video. If you need a YouTube VOD for each session, schedule breaks comfortably below 12 hours and start a new stream rather than relying on one multi-day broadcast. YouTube also recommends keeping a local recording as a backup; on a VPS, check disk capacity, retention, and any storage charges before enabling one. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

A technically stable encoder does not make the content safe to broadcast. Use video, music, images, and other material you have the rights or permissions to stream. A copyright claim or other channel enforcement action can affect a live broadcast independently of Wirecast or the VPS. Repeatedly looping material you do not own is not made permissible by running it continuously; reused or repetitive content can also raise separate monetization-policy concerns. Check the current rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running stream, and keep permission records where relevant.

Troubleshooting a Wirecast VPS stream
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the channel’s live feature is enabled, the selected destination is YouTube, and the correct account or current stream URL and key are in use. Confirm that the VPS firewall and provider allow the chosen outbound workflow. If a key may have leaked, reset it and update Wirecast.
- Wirecast reports dropped frames or the picture stutters: Check host CPU/GPU load and actual encoder acceleration, then compare sustained VPS upload capacity with the output bitrate. Reduce frame rate, resolution, or bitrate and repeat the representative-content test. Wirecast’s bandwidth planning baseline is twice the total stream bitrate.
- The output stops after running for a while: Check the VM’s reboot or maintenance history, provider workload limits, network events, and Wirecast status. Review YouTube’s health messages to distinguish a feed issue from a local process or host issue. Use the restart/reconnect procedure you prepared; do not assume the VPS or YouTube will restart the encoder automatically.
- The VM meets memory requirements on paper but encoding is still poor: The published memory baseline is not a high-resolution or 60 fps performance guarantee. Verify whether Wirecast can access the intended graphics device or encoder, then test a lower profile or a different host configuration.
- The broadcast is live but no archive appears: Check whether the session exceeded 12 hours. For future archives, create shorter events with breaks below that threshold and maintain a separate recording if the VOD is important.
What does a Wirecast VPS setup cost?
There is no single total price established for this setup. Budget for the VPS, any Windows license not included in its plan, Wirecast licensing, and storage or network charges if the provider bills them separately. The VPS’s advertised compute tier is not proof it can handle the desired stream profile, so a workload test is part of choosing a cost-effective configuration. Compare the full recurring cost with the time and monitoring needed to manage a machine yourself; provider plans and software licensing terms vary.
