To find which parts of an ended YouTube livestream held viewers’ attention, open YouTube Studio, go to Content → Live, select the stream, then open Analytics → Engagement and look for Key moments for audience retention. Read that report alongside average view duration and concurrent-viewer metrics: retention helps show how attention changed across the video, while concurrent viewers measure how many people watched at the same time.
Before analyzing a 24/7 stream, make sure it was archived
A continuous broadcast is not necessarily a continuous replay you can analyze afterward. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours and warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube’s archive guidance does not promise a complete replay for every long stream.
If you need to identify specific moments across a day-long broadcast, end and restart it in shorter sessions, check that each session has an archive and an Analytics report, and keep a local recording as a backup. This gives you separate videos to inspect rather than relying on one unusually long archive.
Find the audience-retention report
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, then select Live.
- Choose an ended stream from the list.
- Open its Analytics tab and choose Engagement.
- Look for Key moments for audience retention. Use the report’s visible changes to locate parts where attention weakened or remained sustained.
YouTube says live-stream analytics appear within minutes after a stream ends, but reports and availability can vary. Verify that the retention report is present for the specific session; YouTube does not guarantee a usable curve for every unusually long stream, archive, or channel configuration. If it is missing, do not infer segment-level retention from total watch time, average view duration, or a concurrent-viewer peak. See YouTube’s live-stream metrics guidance.

Interpret dips and sustained sections carefully
What a dip can tell you
A visible drop marks a point where the retention pattern weakened. Check what was happening in the stream at that time—such as a change in game, a break, or a transition—then compare the same kind of segment in other sessions. A dip alone does not prove why viewers left; use it as a clue to investigate, not a diagnosis.
What sustained attention can tell you
Sections where the curve holds up can point to material worth repeating, extending, or placing more prominently. Check whether the same pattern appears in comparable sessions before changing the format.

Use the other metrics to add context
Retention answers a different question from concurrent viewers. The retention report helps you assess attention across moments; average and peak concurrent viewers describe the simultaneous audience. A high peak means many people were watching at one moment, not that they stayed through a particular section.
| Metric | What it helps you assess |
|---|---|
| Audience retention | How attention changes across moments in the video. |
| Average view duration | How long viewers watched on average; it does not identify which section held them. |
| Average and peak concurrent viewers | The number of viewers watching simultaneously on average or at the highest point. |
| Impressions and click-through rate | Whether the stream’s packaging and discovery appeal are drawing clicks. |
| Views and traffic sources | Reach and where viewers found the video. |
YouTube describes live performance through appeal, engagement, and satisfaction, and advises comparing the same content type because audience behavior varies by format. Compare sessions with similar purposes and lengths. For a gaming channel, for example, compare gameplay streams with other gameplay streams rather than treating a tournament broadcast and a quiet ambient game stream as equivalent. More context is available in YouTube’s Live content-tab analytics tips.

Compare sessions and export data when useful
YouTube Analytics can filter content by Live, On demand, or Live & on demand, and includes reports such as watch time, audience retention, demographics, playback locations, traffic sources, and devices. Video-level live metrics can be downloaded as CSV. Use exports when you need to organize several sessions or compare the same kind of stream over time.
Analytics is based on Video ID and is processed and despammed, so its figures can differ from Live Control Room measurements. Treat Studio Analytics as the retrospective view for the ended video, not as a promise that every number will match a real-time dashboard. See YouTube’s explanation of live metrics.

Account for changes in YouTube’s interface and view definitions
YouTube says it is gradually rolling out an updated Studio Analytics experience beginning July 2026, so the layout may differ between channels. If the labels or placement do not match these steps, look within the selected video’s Analytics views for Engagement and the audience-retention report. YouTube’s Analytics overview describes the experience.
YouTube’s content-performance guidance says views began counting when a video starts playing across formats on August 24, 2026. Treat that as a boundary when comparing view-count trends across that date; raw views are not a substitute for watch duration or retention. Partner-program earnings and eligibility use separate engaged or qualified criteria. See YouTube’s content-performance guidance.
