Use OBS to play and send your lesson playlist, and YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule the YouTube event, check its preview, and start the broadcast. For a playlist of local lesson files, add OBS’s VLC Video source—YouTube Live Control Room does not select or order those files for you.
What each tool controls
- OBS: plays your local lesson videos and combines them with any other sources, such as a microphone or webcam, before sending the program to YouTube.
- YouTube Live Control Room: configures and manages the YouTube event, provides the stream URL and key, shows the incoming preview, and launches a scheduled encoder stream.
This walkthrough is for a playlist of local media files played in OBS. It does not describe controlling a YouTube playlist through OBS or Live Control Room.
Build the lesson playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS documents this source for playing a list of media files; its built-in Media Source is for a single file. See OBS Media Sources.
- Create a scene. In OBS, create or select the scene you will use for the lesson. Add the playlist source and choose VLC Video, then add the lesson files in the order you want them played.
- Check playback options. Confirm the file order and whether you want the list to loop. OBS documents loop playlist as on and shuffle as off by default; check the controls rather than assuming those settings suit your lesson.
- Add any supporting sources. Add a webcam, display or capture device, or microphone only if you need it. Source order determines which visual sources appear above others. OBS’s Sources Guide explains source behavior. Microphone and desktop audio are captured by default in the Quick Start Guide’s setup; adjust them under Settings > Audio if needed. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Preview the whole sequence. Play through the playlist and check the picture, audio levels, transitions between files, and final item. Do this before students are watching.
Create or schedule the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. You can start an encoder stream when you are ready, or schedule it in advance. For a scheduled stream, open Manage and select Schedule Stream, then set the event details and privacy. Scheduling gives you an upcoming watch page to share; viewers may opt in to reminders. YouTube also documents reusing settings from a previous stream. Interface labels can change; consult YouTube’s guides to creating a live stream with an encoder and managing live stream settings.
Choose the timing that fits the lesson
- Start immediately: choose this when you do not need an upcoming event page or advance promotion.
- Schedule: choose this when you want to share the watch page ahead of time, allow viewers to set reminders, or prepare and check the event before class.
These are workflow differences, not a claim that one option performs better. YouTube recommends setting up in advance and testing the stream.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect OBS to Live Control Room
- Get the stream details. In Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter them in OBS. Open OBS streaming settings and use the copied URL and key. If the YouTube service connection is available in your OBS setup, you can use that instead. For a manual connection, use the RTMPS URL shown by Live Control Room if your encoder supports it; do not substitute a server address from memory. YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s stream settings guide.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a credential: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube puts it plainly: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If the key is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; editors and viewers cannot. Replace the old key in OBS after resetting it.
Preview and go live
- Start streaming from OBS. This sends the playlist program to YouTube; it does not, by itself, complete the scheduled event launch.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the lesson picture and sound are present and that the correct event is selected.
- For a scheduled encoder stream, click Go live in Live Control Room once the preview appears. YouTube recommends testing beforehand and checking the preview, but these are recommendations rather than guaranteed technical requirements. See its live streaming tips.
Pick latency for the kind of lesson
YouTube’s latency options trade delay against playback buffering. If students need to ask questions and receive near-real-time responses, prioritize lower delay; if interaction is not important, a setting that favors buffering may be more suitable. Choose the option in the event’s settings based on the class format, and check YouTube’s live stream settings guide for current choices.
End the stream and find its archive
When the lesson is over, stop sending content from OBS, then use End Stream in Live Control Room for the scheduled encoder workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and available from the Live tab in Studio. That archive threshold applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume a longer stream will be archived the same way. Details are in YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.

Check permissions, copyright, and lesson content
- Live access: confirm the channel can livestream and that the person setting up the event has the channel access needed to manage it. YouTube’s live-streaming instructions are the place to check current eligibility and account requirements.
- Copyright: use video, music, images, and other material you have permission to broadcast. A lesson playlist being educational does not by itself establish that every item is cleared for a public livestream. Check rights for both the live use and any resulting archive.
- Reused content: do not treat permission to use a clip as a guarantee about YouTube monetization or channel policy. Make sure the stream serves your own lesson purpose and follows YouTube’s current policies; this workflow does not determine whether a channel or video qualifies for monetization.
- Equipment: a costly setup is not a prerequisite according to YouTube’s live-streaming tips. Add a microphone or capture device only if your lesson needs one; OBS supports those inputs.
Troubleshooting the playlist-to-stream path
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot add or play the playlist source | VLC is not installed, or the wrong source type was chosen. | Install VLC and use OBS’s VLC Video source for multiple local files. Use Media Source only for a single file. |
| Files play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly | The playlist order, loop, or shuffle behavior is not what you intended. | Review the source’s file order and playback controls. OBS documents loop on and shuffle off as defaults; verify the actual settings. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | OBS may not be sending to the correct URL/key, or the event may not be the one you configured. | Compare OBS’s stream details with the selected Live Control Room event, then start streaming again and wait for the preview. |
| OBS is sending, but the scheduled event is not public | The scheduled encoder workflow still needs the creator to launch it in Live Control Room. | Once the preview appears, select Go live for the correct scheduled event. |
| The key no longer works or may have been exposed | The key may have been reset or compromised. | Have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room, then update OBS with the replacement key. |
| Students report delayed responses or buffering | The chosen latency setting may not fit the lesson’s interaction needs or viewers’ playback conditions. | Review the event’s latency choice: lower delay favors interaction, while more delay can allow more buffering. |
