Once enabled, badges can appear beside members’ names in your channel’s live chat, and members can use your uploaded emoji there. YouTube’s guidance describes these as general membership and live-chat features, not as features with a special all-day mode or a 24/7 availability guarantee.
What members see in live chat
A membership badge appears next to a member’s channel name in comments and live chats on the channel they joined. Depending on your setup, badges can be YouTube’s default designs, custom designs, or a mix. YouTube associates badge stages with active paid membership tenure: new, 1 month, 2 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, and 5 years. Members can use creator-uploaded custom emoji in comments on that channel’s videos and in its live chat. The creator assigns an emoji family name, which members use to autocomplete emoji in chat. YouTube says all members can use uploaded emoji regardless of membership level. These are channel-specific benefits: membership in one channel does not grant access to another channel’s badges or emoji. YouTube Help: membership benefits
Membership badges and emoji are distinct from other perks. A channel can offer up to six membership levels, with one to five perks per level; higher levels inherit perks from lower levels. Check availability before configuring them
Channel memberships are not available to every creator or viewer in every location. Check your channel’s eligibility and location availability, and ensure memberships are enabled before following the setup below. Viewers also need to be in a location where purchasing memberships is available. Perks vary by channel, so do not assume every channel provides custom art or members-only chat. Set up badges and custom emoji in YouTube Studio
- Open Memberships. Sign in to YouTube Studio and go to the channel’s Memberships area. The current navigation label or location can change; use YouTube’s current Memberships help instructions if your Studio layout differs.
- Choose the badge approach. In the Loyalty badges controls, use default badges, upload custom badges, or combine the two. Plan which tenure stages each design represents and make the artwork recognizable at its small chat size.
- Prepare and upload badge files. YouTube Help specifies JPEG or PNG files under 1 MB and a minimum size of 32 × 32 pixels. Badges render at 14 × 14 pixels in comments and the Posts tab, and 16 × 16 pixels in live chat. Design for legibility at those rendered sizes, not just on a large canvas.
- Upload custom emoji. In Memberships, add the emoji images you want members to use. YouTube prefers JPEG, PNG, or GIF files under 1 MB, with dimensions from 48 × 48 pixels (preferred) up to 480 × 480 pixels. GIF emoji display as a static image, not an animation.
- Name the emoji family. Set a family name so members can autocomplete the emoji in live chat. Tell members the name and any useful shortcuts in your channel’s membership information.
- Check the result in context. Review the uploaded artwork at chat scale and confirm the intended badges and emoji are available to members. YouTube Help specifies emoji display at 24 × 24 points on mobile and most monitors; Retina and HiDPI displays may show them at 48 × 48 pixels or higher. YouTube Help: badge and emoji specifications

YouTube’s emoji-slot table starts at four emoji with zero members and reaches 54 slots at 5,000 or more members, with intermediate member thresholds on the official page. Check YouTube Help’s current slot table in Memberships before planning a full set, because eligibility and published limits can change. What is different—or not different—in a 24/7 stream
The documented setup is the same channel Memberships configuration used for live chat generally; YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not define a separate badge or emoji mode for an uninterrupted stream, nor does it promise that either feature will be available continuously for every 24/7 broadcast. Treat the features as standard channel membership benefits rather than a special property of always-on streaming.
Live chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. YouTube’s general live-chat guidance says viewers may send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, with each message limited to 200 characters.
