How to Verify a Creative Commons Video License Before Adding It to a YouTube Live Playlist

A Creative Commons label is a starting point, not automatic clearance. Verify the license, the uploader’s authority over every element, attribution requirements, and live Content ID risks before scheduling a video.

Before you put a YouTube video in a playlist for a live program, check the video’s license and description, confirm the uploader can license every element in it, and save the details you will need for attribution. A Creative Commons label helps identify the stated license; it does not by itself prove that the uploader owns the music, footage, or images, or clear a separate live rebroadcast.

How do I check if a YouTube video is Creative Commons?

  1. Find candidates with YouTube’s Creative Commons search filter. Use the filter as a discovery tool, not as permission to rebroadcast. YouTube’s default upload license is the Standard YouTube license; its selectable Creative Commons option is Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY). YouTube’s license types guidance also advises checking the license information in the video description.
  2. Open the individual video and inspect its license information and description. Confirm that it is identified as Creative Commons Attribution. Save a dated record containing the video URL, title, uploader or channel, and displayed license text. A playlist entry or search-filter result is not a substitute for checking the actual video.
  3. Check the uploader’s authority over the entire video. YouTube says CC BY is appropriate for material the uploader can license under CC BY, such as their original work, material already released under CC BY, or public-domain material. The label is selected by the uploader; it does not independently establish rights to third-party music, archival footage, images, or other embedded works. If an element’s origin or permission is unclear, verify it separately or do not use the video until the uncertainty is resolved. See YouTube’s license guidance and its Creative Commons overview.
  4. Write down the use you are asking the license to cover. Distinguish organizing or linking to a video in a playlist from showing it in a live program, editing it, or monetizing the program. Do not assume that playlist inclusion grants permission for a separate live rebroadcast or adaptation. YouTube says CC BY reuse follows the license terms, and commercial use is permitted only when the license grants commercial rights. Check any conditions that apply to the particular work. YouTube’s license types guidance explains the platform’s license option; it is not a blanket clearance of every work within a video.
  5. Capture attribution details before scheduling. YouTube recommends including the work’s title, author, source URL, and license information, such as “is licensed under CC BY.” Keep those details in the stream description and/or visible credits, and retain your dated clearance record. YouTube’s license guidance provides the credit elements.
  6. Ask the uploader or rights holder when anything is uncertain. YouTube cannot grant rights to another person’s upload. Ask for written permission that clearly covers your exact live use, whether it is commercial, the relevant territories, and any editing or rebroadcast. Keep the response with your other records. If the video includes separate third-party material, ask about those rights too. YouTube’s guidance on Creative Commons and copyright issues with live streams describes the limits of relying on a platform label.
  7. Prepare for YouTube’s live copyright checks. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for licensed content to avoid an interruption. YouTube says an archived stream may receive Content ID claims after it ends. A license label is not a guarantee against claims or other copyright issues. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Does adding a video to a playlist mean I can rebroadcast it?

No. Adding a video to a playlist is an organization action; it does not itself grant rights for a separate live display, rebroadcast, editing, or monetized program. Check what license applies to the actual work and whether the uploader had authority to offer it. If the proposed use or ownership of an element is unclear, obtain written permission from the relevant rights holder before broadcasting.

Playlist availability is also separate from copyright permission. YouTube notes that private videos may not play for playlist viewers unless they have been shared with them, and videos with embedding disabled may not appear in embedded playlists. Check visibility and embed settings if your plan depends on sharing or embedding the playlist. YouTube’s playlist guidance covers playlist behavior.

What should I record for each candidate video?

Use a clearance record for each item rather than relying on memory or the playlist itself. A simple record can include:

  • Any written permissions and applicable commercial, territorial, duration, or editing conditions.
  • Whether the rights holder needs to allowlist your channel for Content ID.
  • Whether the video’s visibility and embedding settings support your playlist plan.

What if the license is unclear or a live stream gets interrupted?

The label says CC BY, but the video contains music or clips from elsewhere

Do not assume the uploader can license those components. Identify the separate work and verify its license or obtain permission from its rights holder. If you cannot establish clearance for the planned live use, leave the video out.

You have permission, but YouTube flags the live stream

Contact the rights holder and ask whether they can add your channel to their Content ID allowlist. Keep written permission available, but do not assume that having it prevents an automated live interruption. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance says streams are scanned for third-party matches and may be interrupted.

The video does not play from the playlist

Check whether the video is private and shared with the intended viewers, or whether embedding is disabled if you are using an embedded playlist. Those availability settings do not change the rights analysis.

You are relying on credit or fair use instead of permission

Credit is an attribution requirement when applicable; it does not create permission or automatically make a use fair. Copyright exceptions vary by jurisdiction. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains that copyright questions depend on law and context. For ambiguous licensing, separate owners, or a commercial broadcast, obtain written permission or qualified legal advice.
