To unlock live streaming, verify your channel by phone in YouTube Studio on a computer: open Settings → Channel → Features, select Verify phone number under Features that require phone verification, and enter the code YouTube sends. Verification is necessary, but YouTube also requires that you have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; the person starting the stream must be at least 16. Newly enabled live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available for a first broadcast.
Verify your channel by phone
- Sign in to the Google account that owns or manages the YouTube channel, then open YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Select Settings → Channel → Features.
- Under Features that require phone verification, select Verify phone number.
- Choose text message or voice call if YouTube offers both options. Enter the code sent to your phone and complete the prompts.
- Return to the channel’s feature status or live control area. If live streaming has just been enabled, allow up to 24 hours before trying your first broadcast.
YouTube says the owner or a manager of a Brand Account can phone-verify its channel. For a channel that is not a Brand Account, only the channel owner can do so. See YouTube’s phone-verification feature guide.
What verification unlocks—and what it does not
YouTube lists live streaming among the features unlocked by phone verification. This is intermediate-feature verification, not the separate advanced-feature process. To get advanced features, YouTube says a creator must first complete phone verification and then either establish sufficient channel history or verify identity by ID or video where those options are available. YouTube says most active channels already have enough channel history, and ID or video verification is not offered to everyone. Details are in YouTube’s intermediate and advanced features guide.
Phone verification does not remove a live-streaming restriction. YouTube’s general eligibility guidance requires that a channel have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The person starting the broadcast must also be at least 16. Check Studio notifications and channel standing if the live option remains unavailable. Choose the right way to go live
YouTube supports live streams from the mobile app, a computer webcam, an encoder, or a console. The 50-subscriber minimum applies to live streaming from the YouTube mobile app; do not assume it applies to webcam, encoder, or console streams. YouTube’s general live-streaming page lists channel verification and the absence of restrictions in the previous 90 days as requirements. See Get started with live streaming.
Streaming from the YouTube mobile app
- You need at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and a supported device.
- YouTube lists Android 8.0 or later and iOS 8 or later as supported mobile operating systems in its guidance.
- For channels with 50–999 subscribers, YouTube may limit the mobile stream’s audience, and archived streams are set to private by default. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removal of these limitations may take several weeks.
- A newly enabled first mobile live stream may take up to 24 hours to become available.

Streaming from a computer, encoder, or console
A computer webcam stream requires a computer with a webcam. YouTube also supports encoder and console streams; the mobile app’s 50-subscriber threshold should not be treated as a universal requirement for these methods. If your goal is simply to unlock channel access, a webcam or other streaming equipment is not part of phone verification.
If the verification code does not arrive
- Confirm that the phone number and selected delivery method are correct, then try the other method if YouTube offers it.
- Some mobile carriers do not support YouTube’s verification texts or voice calls. If delivery still fails, follow YouTube’s account-verification troubleshooting guidance.
- YouTube says a phone number can be used to verify no more than two channels per year. If you have already reached that limit, another number may be needed.
If live streaming is still unavailable
- Check the restriction window: confirm that the channel has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and review Studio for notices.
- Check who verified the channel: for a non-Brand Account channel, verification must be completed by the owner. Brand Account owners and managers can do it.
- Allow activation time: if this is your first live stream after enabling the feature, wait up to 24 hours before checking again.
- Check age and method: the person starting a stream must be at least 16; if streaming from the mobile app, also check the subscriber threshold and device requirements.
- Review feature eligibility: Community Guidelines or copyright restrictions can affect access. Check the channel’s Features or Feature eligibility display in Studio.
