Write a unique description for each video. Use its first one or two sentences to tell viewers what the video covers, and include one or two accurate phrases that also describe it in the title. Then add only the context, chapters, credits, and links that help viewers understand or use that specific video.
What should I put in my YouTube description?
Put the most useful information first. On the watch page, viewers initially see only the opening lines; they must expand the description to read the rest. A useful description answers, quickly, what this video is about and what a viewer will get from watching it.
- Write a clear opening. In one or two sentences, explain what the video shows, answers, or teaches. Make the opening accurate and understandable on its own.
- Add specific context. Mention a method, location, game, product, person, or result only if it is actually present in the video. Work in one or two central search phrases naturally; do not repeat them just to fill space.
- Add navigation when it helps. For a longer video, include accurate chapters so viewers can jump to a section. A relevant playlist can help viewers find related videos.
- Include useful links and credits. Link to relevant material and credit collaborators or people who helped. Keep calls to action appropriate to the video and verify that links will work in that placement.
- Keep recurring channel information separate. You can set default description text for information that belongs on many uploads, then add a distinct explanation for each video.
YouTube recommends unique descriptions and aligning the description’s main terms with the video’s title. Its guidance says that search terms are matched with the video and description text; this is discoverability guidance, not a promise of higher rankings or more views. Read YouTube’s tips for video descriptions.
Example opening for a gaming video
For a video that actually demonstrates a particular boss strategy, an opening could say: “This guide shows how to beat [boss] in [game] using [strategy]. It covers the attack patterns to watch for and when to heal.” Replace the bracketed details with what the video really contains; do not claim a route, result, or feature the video does not show.

How long should a YouTube description be?
YouTube’s description field limit is 5,000 characters. That is a maximum, not a target: use the space needed to explain the video and provide useful navigation or links, rather than stretching a short description with repeated keywords. The full description is not immediately visible, so put essential context before the “Show more” control on desktop or “more” on mobile. The field supports bold, italic, and strikethrough formatting; line breaks and bullets can make longer descriptions easier to scan. See YouTube’s upload instructions for description-field details.
How do I add chapters to a YouTube video?
Write creator-added chapters in the description using timestamps followed by section names. YouTube’s stated requirements are:

- The first timestamp must be 00:00.
- There must be at least three timestamps, in ascending order.
- Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
For example, if the video supports these sections, a description might include:
- 00:00 Introduction
- 00:18 Gear and preparation
- 01:42 Boss attack patterns
- 04:10 The final phase
Use timestamps that match the actual video; do not guess or reuse chapter times from another upload. YouTube says chapter availability is not universal: not all videos are eligible for automatic chapters, and access to chapters may require Advanced features. Consult YouTube’s Video Chapters help page for current details.

How should I choose keywords without stuffing the description?
Start with the words that accurately name the video’s subject, then check how viewers might describe or search for it. YouTube points creators to the Research tab in YouTube Analytics and Google Ads Keyword Planner for exploring popular terms and synonyms. After publishing, the Analytics “How viewers find your” report can help you compare your wording with search terms that brought viewers to the video.
Use those sources to refine accurate wording, not to insert every related phrase. A description should still read naturally and explain the actual video. YouTube’s published guidance does not quantify a ranking increase, click-through improvement, or view lift from changing descriptions.

Are links in YouTube descriptions clickable?
It depends on the format and channel feature access. URLs in long-form video descriptions can be clickable when the channel has access to advanced features. URLs in Shorts descriptions are non-clickable. Check the link in the relevant video format before telling viewers to click it, and use a channel profile link for an important audience link when appropriate. YouTube explains the current distinctions in Sharing links with your audiences.
Choose links for their usefulness to the viewer: for example, a related playlist or a resource directly discussed in the video. Add collaborator credits and mentions where relevant, rather than filling the description with unrelated destinations.

Do tags in a YouTube description help with search?
Do not put a long list of tags in the description. YouTube says tags have a minimal role in discovery except when a video’s subject is commonly misspelled, and that excessive tags in a description violate spam-related policies. If tags are genuinely useful, use the dedicated tags field instead. See YouTube’s guidance on adding tags.
How to review a description before and after publishing
- Confirm the opening explains this particular video before the description is expanded.
- Check that its main terms accurately match the subject and title.
- Remove repeated phrases, generic filler, or details the video does not support.
- Check that chapter timestamps are accurate and meet the stated rules.
- Verify links in the relevant format and confirm credits and calls to action are relevant.
- Preview the description in Search, on the watch page, and on mobile to check how the opening and full text appear.
- After publication, use Analytics discovery terms to see whether viewers are finding the video with language your description could clarify.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your gaming channel also runs a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
