Video game soundtracks build tension by matching musical choices to the emotion a scene needs—uncertainty, anticipation, or immediate danger—and, when play changes, adapting the music without losing continuity. Texture, melody, harmony, rhythm, form, atmosphere, dissonance, and repetition can all contribute; none is a guaranteed formula. The score must also be integrated and tested in the game, where player actions can change when danger arrives.
Start with the dramatic purpose
A composer first needs to know what kind of tension the scene calls for. A player waiting for a threat, noticing a clue, or facing an attack is experiencing different dramatic situations. The music can support those distinctions rather than applying one generic “scary” sound to all of them.
GDC’s session Adaptive Music: The Secret Lies Within Music Itself identifies texture, melody, harmony, rhythm, and form as elements composers can shape. These are useful dimensions for asking how a cue creates and sustains suspense, not ingredients that must be combined in a fixed order.
Shape the sound to suggest unease
Use atmosphere without literal sound effects
Ominous ambience can suggest the character of an environment without imitating it realistically. In her discussion of suspenseful scoring, composer Winifred Phillips describes shaping musical sound to evoke atmosphere. That gives a composer room to make a place feel threatening through the quality and behavior of the music rather than simply reproducing noises from the setting. See Phillips’s discussion of ominous ambience.

Make familiar material feel unstable
Dissonant intervals and repeated clusters can give musical material a more abrasive or unsettled character. Phillips describes how repeating clusters can transform a cheerful musical idea into something creepy. This is an example of a compositional approach, not a guarantee that every player will react the same way. Her article on creepy clusters explains the technique.
Let suspense change as play changes
In a game, the composer cannot always assume that every player will reach a danger point at the same moment. Music may need to move from exploration toward peril, or grow more foreboding as a threat escalates. The transition should feel intentional and reinforce the emotion the game is trying to create, rather than sound like an unrelated cue has started.

Phillips describes suspense as a musical clue that escalates until the monster appears: “Like a clue in a mystery story, this unsettling musical atmosphere escalates the tension until the monster lurches out of the shadows and strikes.” The image captures one way music can prepare a player for an event without announcing it outright. Her comments appear in Game Developer’s composer interview.
Adaptation also creates a continuity challenge: the music must respond to changing gameplay while still feeling like one coherent score. The GDC session on adaptive music treats musical integrity across changing material as part of the craft, not an afterthought. The session overview discusses that relationship.

Composition is only part of the production
A completed recording does not automatically work as interactive game music. It has to be connected to gameplay, prepared for the game’s runtime mix, and tested under different circumstances. GDC’s 2006 session Implementing an Adaptive, Live Orchestral Soundtrack describes the process from concept and composition through recording and implementation, and emphasizes that integration and testing can be at least as important and difficult as composing the score. The session is useful for that durable production principle, not as a guide to current middleware features.
Those production choices involve trade-offs. A team has to reconcile creative ambition with its budget and schedule, then verify that the music behaves as intended as gameplay varies. The result depends not only on the notes, but also on whether the implemented score responds appropriately in context.

A practical way to evaluate a tension score
When considering how a game’s music builds suspense, ask four questions:
- What dramatic effect is the cue serving? Is it creating uncertainty, anticipation, approaching danger, or the onset of an attack?
- How does it change with gameplay? Does the music respond as danger or player circumstances change?
- Does the score maintain continuity? Do transitions and variations still feel like parts of the same musical world?
- Has it been implemented and tested in play? Does the runtime behavior support the intended effect under different circumstances?
These questions are a practical way to organize the craft, not a formal ranking of techniques or a measured test of player response.
