Virtual Game Cards let you load eligible digital Nintendo Switch purchases onto a linked Switch or Switch 2, but they do not transfer save data. To move a full system’s eligible data—including saves—use Nintendo’s separate System Transfer process; the two features solve different problems.
What Virtual Game Cards do—and what they do not do
Nintendo announced Virtual Game Cards in March 2025 as a way to manage digital games and lend them within a Nintendo Account family group. Eligible digital games and DLC bought through Nintendo eShop appear as virtual cards: load one onto a supported console to play it there, or eject it to make it available to load elsewhere. Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta described loading and ejecting games between Switch and Switch 2 as working much like moving a physical game card. Nintendo’s developer interview explains the idea; the feature’s operating rules are in the Virtual Game Card Guide.

A Virtual Game Card governs access to the purchased software on a console. It does not copy or move the save file. If you load a game onto another system, its save data remains on the system where that save was created. System Transfer is the separate process for moving eligible console data to Switch 2.
How to load a digital game on Switch 2
First-time setup pairs the consoles for Virtual Game Cards. Nintendo allows an account to link up to two Switch or Switch 2 systems in any combination. Pairing requires the systems to be near each other for local wireless communication and requires an internet connection. After linking, load the game on the console where you want to play it.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Link the systems. Follow the Virtual Game Card prompts on both consoles and complete the local wireless pairing while connected to the internet. This is a one-time pairing for the systems.
- Choose the destination console. On the system where you want to play, open the Virtual Game Cards menu from the HOME Menu, select the game, and choose the option to load it onto that system. Follow any on-screen confirmation.
- Start the game. An internet connection is required the first time you start a game after loading it onto that console. Once it has been started, Nintendo says the loaded game can be played offline.
Other users on the console with the loaded card can also play the game, subject to the game’s own requirements. To move a card to the other linked system, eject it from the console that currently has it loaded, then load it on the other one. Ejecting a loaded title requires an internet connection. For Nintendo’s current menus and detailed instructions, see the Virtual Game Card Guide.
When you have more than two consoles
The two-system limit applies to the consoles linked for Virtual Game Cards on an account. If you want to use a third system, you must change which systems are linked or consider Nintendo’s separate online-license options. A loaded Virtual Game Card and an online license are different ways of accessing digital software; review Nintendo’s current guidance to choose the setup that fits your consoles and how you play.
Can you use Switch games on Switch 2?
Switch 2 supports many Nintendo Switch games, and compatible Switch game cards can be loaded as Virtual Game Cards on either system. Compatibility is not universal: Nintendo warns that some Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible on Switch 2. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a specific title before relying on it.

You can lend eligible Virtual Game Cards to people in your Nintendo Account family group. Nintendo’s current guide allows up to three cards to be lent at a time. A borrower can hold one lent game at a time on one console for up to 14 days, unless it is returned earlier. Some titles cannot be lent, including certain Nintendo Switch Online member-exclusive games. When the loan ends, the borrower’s save data stays on the borrower’s system.

Use System Transfer when the goal is to move eligible console data—not merely to make a purchased game available on a different system. Nintendo says eligible digital software downloads onto the destination Switch 2 after transfer and its initial setup. The transfer guide describes local communication transfer and server upload, and warns that not all data transfers. Review Nintendo’s System Transfer instructions and exclusions before resetting, selling, or trading in the old console.

Local communication transfer
This method transfers eligible data directly from the old Switch to Switch 2 using local communication. Follow the on-screen process and check Nintendo’s guide for prerequisites and exclusions for the data you need.
Server upload
This option uploads eligible data from the old Switch for download to Switch 2. Nintendo says the old console is initialized after the upload, so do not choose this path without understanding that consequence. Uploaded data is stored for up to one year; the specific download deadline is shown during setup and in account settings. Confirm the deadline and complete the download before it expires.
