If teams finish tied, the league applies a fixed sequence of tiebreakers, starting with head-to-head results. The seed then determines a fixed first-round bracket; teams are not reseeded after that round.
Who qualifies, and how are teams seeded?
The 2026 playoff field is the league’s top eight teams, with no separate East or West qualification. Teams are ordered by regular-season records. Each team plays 44 regular-season games in 2026, so comparing records and winning percentages produces the same ordering. What tiebreakers does the WNBA use?
When teams are tied in the standings, the WNBA applies these criteria in order. It uses the same procedure for playoff eligibility and home-court advantage. The official WNBA standings page lists the operative order.
- Head-to-head record: The tied team or teams with the better record in games against one another rank higher.
- Record against .500-or-better teams: Compare each tied team’s winning percentage against all teams that finish the season with a record of .500 or better. Because the comparison group is determined by final records, this criterion may not be settled until the regular season ends.
- Head-to-head point differential: Compare points scored minus points allowed in games between the tied teams.
- Overall point differential: Compare points scored minus points allowed against all opponents.
How does a tie involving three or more teams work?
The league does not simply compare every team once and stop. At each tiebreak step, it eliminates as many teams as possible. When one or more teams are separated from the tied group, the process starts again at the first criterion for the teams that remain tied. This restart matters because a multi-team tie can become a two-team tie, changing which head-to-head games count.

What does the seed determine in the 2026 bracket?
The 2026 postseason has three rounds. First-round matchups are set by seed: No. 1 plays No. 8 and No. 4 plays No. 5 in one half of the bracket; No. 3 plays No. 6 and No. 2 plays No. 7 in the other. Teams are not reseeded after the first round, so the bracket path is fixed. The series lengths for the 2026 postseason are:

These formats and pairings are season-specific. The league’s 2021 format announcement describes the structure introduced in 2022, but its Finals length is not the current one: the 2026 official playoff page lists a best-of-seven Finals.

How to read a close standings race
- First check which teams are tied on regular-season record; conference does not determine qualification.
- Apply the tiebreakers in order rather than jumping to point differential before the earlier criteria have been resolved.
- For the .500-or-better comparison, use the final-season records of all opponents to establish which teams belong in that group.
- If a multi-team tie is partly resolved, restart the tiebreak sequence for the teams still tied.
- Once seeds are set, use the fixed bracket and that season’s series lengths to understand the path through the playoffs.
