Xbox Game Pass gives you temporary access to games in a changing catalog; buying a game separately gives you a distinct game license; and free-to-play is a separate category whose online-multiplayer rules should be checked for the specific title. A Game Pass download is not a permanent purchase: access ends if your subscription ends or the game leaves the catalog.
What are the three ways to access Xbox games?

For digital content, “buying” does not mean unrestricted ownership of a file: Microsoft describes digital goods as licensed and governed by usage rules. Do you keep Game Pass games after canceling?
No. Xbox says subscribers have access to library games until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the library. Downloading a catalog game does not turn it into a separately purchased game. Xbox Game Pass FAQ
If a game leaves the catalog while you are subscribed, the subscription alone no longer provides access to it. To continue playing, you would need another valid entitlement, such as buying the game separately. Check the store listing for the title and platform before purchasing; availability and terms can vary.

How does buying a game separately differ?
A separately acquired digital game has its own entitlement, distinct from Game Pass access. Microsoft’s rules govern digital games and describe how eligible purchases may be shared on consoles; the license is associated with the relevant account and remains subject to those rules. A physical disc is another way to play a game, but it is not the same thing as a digital license. Confirm the console supports the disc format and keep the disc available for play. A disc-based entitlement also has conditions if you use Microsoft’s disc-to-digital option.

Can you convert an Xbox game disc to a digital license?
Microsoft’s rules describe a limited disc-to-digital license for certain supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X discs on supported consoles. Not every disc qualifies, and eligibility may change. The digital license remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc; Microsoft may revalidate eligibility, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer have it. Do free-to-play Xbox games require Game Pass for online multiplayer?
Do not assume that “free to play” answers the multiplayer question. Xbox’s free-game listings establish that free-to-play titles are available, but they do not, by themselves, confirm that every such game can use online multiplayer without a subscription across all titles, regions, and platforms. How does sharing digital games on Xbox work?
Microsoft’s Home console rules allow other users on the purchaser’s Home console to use eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and subscription-enabled content. The purchasing account does not have to remain signed in for that Home console sharing to work. This makes content usable by other profiles on that device; it does not transfer the purchaser’s entitlement. Xbox Home Xbox
On a console that is not the purchaser’s Home console, Microsoft describes roaming access while the purchaser is signed in and connected. If that account signs out, roaming licenses become invalid for other accounts on that console. Sharing behavior therefore depends on which console is set as Home and whether the purchasing account is present.

What should you check before choosing a subscription or purchase?
- How long you want access: a catalog game is conditional on both an active subscription and continued inclusion; a separate purchase uses its own license.
- Whether the game is currently included: catalog availability changes, and plan benefits differ by market, platform, and plan. Check the current Xbox plan and game pages rather than relying on a fixed catalog count or price. Xbox Game Pass
- Multiplayer requirements: check the specific title’s current requirements, particularly for a free-to-play game.
- How you will play: confirm region and platform availability, disc compatibility, and any required equipment.
- Who will play and where: account sharing on a Home console differs from roaming access on another console.
Xbox says recurring billing is on by default and can be switched off through a Microsoft account or console. For current cancellation and billing controls, use the live instructions for your account and market; stopping recurring billing does not convert catalog access into a purchase. Xbox Game Pass FAQ
