Scopely said Yahtzee With Buddies had its best year yet in 2019, five years after launch. In an August 2020 sponsored GamesBeat article, the company credited a steady expansion around the familiar dice game: more ways to compete, more ways to personalize a player profile, recurring events, and features for playing with friends. Those are Scopely’s explanations for the game’s performance, not independently established causes—and the figures describe that period, not the game’s current status.
What “best year yet” meant
The milestone is historical: Henry Lowenfels, Scopely’s senior vice president of business development, said the game had its best year in 2019, five years into its lifecycle. He also cited players taking an average of 110 rolls a day. PocketGamer.biz reported his comments on January 2, 2020.
In a sponsored GamesBeat article published August 26, 2020, Scopely reported more than $500 million in lifetime revenue, average play of about an hour a day, and more than 110 turns per day. The article was produced in a business relationship with Scopely, so these figures should be read as company-reported rather than independently verified. The two sources give slightly different descriptions of daily play—110 average rolls in Lowenfels’s interview and more than 110 average turns in the later article.
Scopely’s account is useful as a case study in how the company said it developed a licensed casual game over time. It does not establish that any single feature caused the reported performance, and it offers no basis for treating those 2019–2020 metrics as current in 2026.

How the game expanded without leaving Yahtzee behind
The design challenge described by Scopely was to add variety while keeping the core activity—rolling dice to make combinations—recognizable. The company said it introduced six modes in 2019, layering different goals and competitive formats onto that foundation.
Tournaments and Survivor
Scopely pointed to tournament variants such as Solitaire and Bingo, which gave players different competitive structures around dice play. It also described Survivor as a live experience with 100 players in an arena; Lowenfels characterized it more broadly as letting hundreds of players experience the game together. The descriptions establish the scale and format Scopely promoted, but do not specify how many arenas ran at once or how participation worked in every session.

- FAMILY GAME NIGHT: Yahtzee is one of the most epic dice games for game night. Let the good times roll!
- FUN GIFTS FOR FAMILY: Classic board games are excellent go-to gifts for kids, families, and friends
In Lowenfels’s words, the game’s new features joined the product alongside its strongest year in 2019. Beth Nations, Scopely’s senior director of product for growth, likewise wrote that the six new modes built on rolling different Yahtzee combinations. This framing matters: the modes added goals and stakes, rather than replacing the core dice mechanic.
Personalization gave players a visible identity
Scopely described customization as a way to help players express ownership in a casual game. Its examples included profile frames, vanity dice, and custom celebration animations. The August 2020 article said the game had more than 1,500 vanity dice at that time.

The company also said richer player profiles correlated with greater engagement. The article did not provide a study design, comparison group, or causal analysis, so the correlation should not be taken as proof that customization drove retention or revenue. It does show how Scopely presented personalization: as a system of collectable visual choices and profile identity, not just a cosmetic add-on.
Families and PvP made the game social
Scopely reported that almost 70% of players engaged with core player-versus-player play daily, and that more than a third belonged to a Yahtzee Family. Families were described as groups where members could share gifts, take on challenges, and earn rewards. The company also cited social-media friend integration and invitations as ways to bring existing relationships into the game.
Rank #3
- ALL-TIME FAMILY FAVORITE: Classic Yahtzee is the best-selling and most famous dice game of all-time. Families and friends have been enjoying this American icon since the fabulous 50's
- THE BACKGROUND: Luck plays a big role in Yahtzee, but strategy makes a huge difference. You score each combination just once, and the number of different combinations you can score is equal to the number of turns in the game
- THE PLAY: Roll all 5 dice on your turn. If you don't like what you've rolled, you can keep any amount of dice and re-roll the rest up to 2 more times
- FAST PACED: The game ends after each player has 13 turns and filled every box in the column with a score or a zero. The Player or Team with the highest total score for all games (up to six) wins
- WHAT ARE THE ODDS?: Did you know that the odds of rolling a Yahtzee (5 OF A KIND) on your first roll are 1295 to 1? So you won't see that happen very often
The article included examples of friendships forming through play, but those anecdotes are not quantified outcomes. The stronger evidence in the company’s account is the reported participation figures and the existence of features designed for repeated interaction.

Scopely also emphasized changing themes and ongoing live operations. In combination with modes, tournaments, monthly goals, and rewards, these updates offered new short-term objectives while preserving the underlying dice game. The article gives a retrospective account of that approach; it does not compare player behavior before and after updates or isolate the effect of any one feature.

That is the company’s account of how Yahtzee With Buddies stayed active long enough to reach a reported high point five years after release, not a verified formula for long-term success.
