How YouTube’s Creator Economy Works—and How Creators Earn Money

YouTube creators earn through ads, Shorts, Premium, fan funding and Shopping, but eligibility and revenue shares differ—and no payout per view is guaranteed.

YouTube creators can earn through Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads, YouTube Premium viewing, fan funding and Shopping—but there is no universal payment per view, and monetization features unlock at different eligibility levels. The key is to understand which revenue route applies, what YouTube’s published share actually measures, and which conditions must be met before a channel can use it.

How creators can earn on YouTube

YouTube monetization is a set of distinct revenue routes, not one switch that turns on every earning feature. Some routes pay a share of advertising or subscription revenue; others let viewers pay creators or let creators promote products. Eligibility and availability vary by feature and region. YouTube’s feature overview describes the available routes and their conditions.

Revenue route How it works YouTube’s published share description
Watch Page ads Ads displayed or streamed on eligible public long-form videos. 55% of net revenue under the Watch Page Monetization Module.
Shorts Feed ads Ads appear between Shorts; revenue is pooled and allocated among eligible creators. 45% of a creator’s allocated Creator Pool revenue under the Shorts Monetization Module.
Memberships and fan funding Viewers can pay for channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers or Super Thanks, where available. 70% of net revenue under the Commerce Product Module for these features.
YouTube Premium Creators may earn a share related to Premium subscribers watching their content. No single universal rate is stated in YouTube’s earnings overview; creators should check their agreements.
Shopping Eligible creators can promote their own merchandise or tag products from other brands, including through YouTube Shopping’s affiliate program. No universal rate is established in the cited YouTube sources; eligibility and merchant terms need checking.

The percentages are not interchangeable “creator cuts”: they apply to different modules and different revenue bases. YouTube’s partner earnings overview describes the shares and directs creators to their agreements for applicable terms.

How many subscribers do you need to get paid?

YouTube has an earlier-access tier in eligible countries and regions, and a higher threshold for Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads and Premium revenue sharing. Meeting a threshold does not guarantee acceptance or automatically enable every feature.

Earlier access to some features

According to YouTube’s expanded YouTube Partner Program overview, the earlier tier requires 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months or 3 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days. It can open eligible fan-funding and Shopping features, subject to additional feature-specific conditions. It does not unlock Watch Page ads, Shorts Feed ads or Premium revenue sharing.

Higher threshold for ads and Premium revenue sharing

YouTube’s Partner Program eligibility page lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the long-form public watch-hour threshold.

Both paths also depend on factors beyond the numbers: the program must be available in your country or region, your channel must comply with YouTube’s monetization policies, account setup and security requirements must be satisfied, and YouTube must review the application. Individual features can have further conditions. YouTube may show ads on videos outside the higher eligibility level; seeing an ad on a channel does not prove its creator receives a share.

How YouTube Shorts pays creators

Shorts ad revenue does not work like a fixed payment for each view. Under YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies, the process is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. YouTube pools revenue from ads shown between Shorts in the Shorts Feed.
  2. The Creator Pool is allocated based on monetizing creators’ shares of eligible engaged views, calculated by country.
  3. A creator who has accepted the Shorts Monetization Module receives 45% of their allocation.

Views from before a creator accepts the Shorts module are not eligible for this revenue sharing. YouTube also excludes some views, including artificial or fake views and certain non-original or advertiser-ineligible content. Because allocation depends on eligible engaged views and country-level shares, a headline percentage cannot be converted into a guaranteed amount per view.

Why creator earnings vary

YouTube explicitly cautions: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.” Earnings depend on the revenue source and the terms that apply to it. For Shorts, the allocation mechanism adds further variation. A subscriber count, view total or published revenue-share percentage alone is not enough to predict what a creator will earn.

The official sources cited here do not establish a universal RPM, standard salary or typical payment per view. Treat online estimates as estimates tied to their stated channel, audience, period and revenue definition—not as a promise about what another creator will receive.

Location, taxes and policy updates

Program access, individual features and Shopping participation can vary by country or region. YouTube also notes that creators may owe taxes on their income; for personal tax obligations, consult the relevant tax authority or a qualified tax professional.

YouTube has announced changes to its Partner Program terms effective February 1, 2027. That date is in the future as of October 3, 2026, so the changes should not be treated as already in force. Creators should review YouTube’s notice about Partner Program changes for the effective date and any required action, and check the latest terms before relying on them.

Keeping a YouTube channel live is separate from earning revenue

A channel’s ability to run a continuous stream is separate from YPP eligibility and the revenue routes above. If your YouTube channel uses uploaded recordings for a 24/7 stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded video at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
