The OMEN MAX name covers a broader family, not one universal configuration. HP’s U.S. listing verifies the specific 16-ah0097nr with Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. HP’s Japanese Intel specification sheet lists multiple GPU configurations, while launch coverage and Chinese-market listings also point to other options. Check the exact regional product number instead of assuming every OMEN MAX 16 has the same components.

HP lists Unleashed Mode for manual overclocking on the U.S. product page. That feature and the listed hardware do not establish how fast the laptop runs in a particular game, how long it sustains peak power, or how loud it gets.
What the screen and GPU combination means
The 16:10, 2560×1600 screen offers more vertical workspace than a conventional 16:9 panel, which can help with both games and creative applications. Its 240Hz ceiling is most relevant to competitive titles that can produce very high frame rates. It is not a promise that demanding modern games will run at 240 frames per second, especially at high settings or with ray tracing enabled.
The listed 100% sRGB coverage is a useful baseline for general creative work, but it does not prove HDR capability, wide-gamut coverage, factory calibration, or panel uniformity. Likewise, the RTX 5080 name identifies a laptop GPU: do not assume it performs like a desktop RTX 5080. Laptop performance depends on power limits, cooling, and the system’s operating mode.
Power and cooling: design claims, not test results
The China launch report cited up to 175W for the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU, about 75W for the CPU, and more than 250W of combined CPU and GPU power. It also described dual fans, heat pipes, a vapor chamber covering about 61% of the motherboard, and hybrid liquid-metal thermal material. These are reported design and maximum-power claims, not independent measurements of sustained gaming performance.
Maximum component power is not the same as power sustained through a long gaming session. The highest performance settings may depend on AC power and an appropriate OMEN Gaming Hub mode, with fan noise and heat as practical trade-offs. No measured temperatures, noise levels, battery gaming results, or sustained-performance figures are established by the available launch and product-page information. The 330W adapter listed for the U.S. model is another sign that this is designed primarily for plugged-in performance, rather than ultralight portability.

Launch coverage also mentioned international prices starting at $1,899.99, but that starting figure does not establish the price of the Ultra 9/RTX 5080 configuration. HP’s U.S. listing has shown a $0.00 placeholder in indexed results, which is not a usable retail price. Check local sellers for current availability and the complete product number; do not convert the China price and treat the result as a U.S. or other regional MSRP.
One specification conflict to check before buying
Storage generation is a notable regional-SKU discrepancy: the China launch report described a PCIe 5.0 SSD, while HP lists a PCIe Gen4 SSD for the U.S. 16-ah0097nr. These claims may refer to different configurations, but the available information does not resolve that. Verify the storage interface for the exact product number rather than assuming one specification applies to every OMEN MAX 16.
HP lists two M.2 SSD slots for the U.S. model, which suggests room for storage expansion. The listing does not, by itself, confirm which slots are user-accessible, the maximum supported memory, or service procedures. Before upgrading, consult the service documentation for the exact model; do not infer those details from the slot count.
Who might want it—and who should hesitate
The OMEN MAX 16 is aimed at buyers who want a high-end CPU and GPU, a fast 1600p screen, and desktop-style connectivity in a transportable system. The U.S. configuration’s Thunderbolt 4, HDMI 2.1, 2.5GbE, Wi-Fi 7, and two listed M.2 slots make it flexible as a gaming or creator workstation.
It is less compelling for buyers prioritizing low weight, long unplugged gaming sessions, or quiet operation. The 83Wh capacity alone cannot establish battery life, and high-power gaming laptops generally make their best performance trade-offs on AC power. For imported China units, confirm keyboard layout, operating system, charger compatibility, warranty coverage, and the precise component configuration before paying.
On paper, HP’s OMEN MAX 16 is an ambitious RTX 5080-class gaming laptop, but the launch specifications do not make it a tested recommendation. The exact regional SKU, actual local price, and independent measurements of performance, thermals, noise, and battery life matter more than the shared OMEN MAX branding.
