hpfllw73.dll is an HP printer-driver component, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the driver for your exact HP printer. Do not download the DLL from a random file site or copy it into System32; that can introduce malware, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the rest of the driver.
What this file actually does
hpfllw73.dll is associated with HP’s Language Monitor software. Its internal name is LanguageMonitor, and its publisher is Hewlett-Packard Company.
A language monitor is an optional part of a printer driver. Windows can load it through the printer driver’s INF configuration so it can communicate with certain bidirectional printers and add printer-control information to print jobs. It is loaded by the Windows printing system, including the Print Spooler, rather than being a general Windows runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET.
The filename does not identify one universal HP printer model. The exact model and driver package depend on the HP software installed on the computer. Public records also show that different builds can have different architectures and file details, so do not use a reported size, hash, or bitness as a universal rule.

The file may be present inside an HP driver package under a path resembling a Windows DriverStore FileRepository directory. That does not mean it belongs in the general Windows system-file set or that manually copying it there is appropriate.
What the error usually means
The wording helps identify which part of the HP installation needs attention.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears while printing | Damaged HP driver, printer queue, or Print Spooler reference | Repair or reinstall the HP printer package |
| Error appears while adding the printer | Incomplete or incompatible driver installation | Remove the failed device and install the exact HP driver |
| Error appears at every sign-in | Stale HP software, queue, or startup reference | Remove unused HP printer software and its driver |
| Error began after antivirus activity | The DLL or a dependency was quarantined | Check Protection History, then verify the HP package |
| Error says “specified module could not be found” | The named DLL or one of its dependencies is missing | Reinstall the complete driver package |
| Error says the file is not designed to run on Windows | Corruption, wrong architecture, or incompatible legacy driver | Replace the complete driver rather than registering the DLL |
| Error appears in an unrelated game or application | Incorrect association or a stale application reference | Identify the actual calling program before changing Windows files |
The commonly reported messages include “hpfllw73.dll is missing,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” “There was a problem starting hpfllw73.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.” These are general Windows loader messages. They do not prove that a particular HP printer model caused the error.

- While installing or removing a printer
- After Windows Update
- After uninstalling HP software
- After antivirus quarantine
- After disk cleanup or manually deleting files
- After moving from an older Windows installation
That context determines whether you should restore a needed driver or remove an obsolete reference.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer driver
This is the most likely solution when the printer is still needed.
1. Identify the printer model
Check the printer’s front panel, label, or existing Windows entry. You need the complete model name, not just “HP printer.”
In Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
In Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
If Windows shows only a generic name, check the printer itself or any HP invoice and setup documentation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. Remove the broken printer entry
If the printer is still listed but produces the DLL error:
- Open the printer list from Settings.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove or Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove the printer first if you have an important unsaved print queue. Cancel or save those jobs before proceeding.
3. Download the package from HP
Use HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter the exact printer model, choose the installed Windows version, and select the applicable full-feature or full-solution package when HP provides one.
A full-feature package normally includes the printer driver and supporting HP software. A basic package provides core printing functions and may be preferable when the full package is unavailable or unnecessary.

Do not choose a package solely because its filename contains a similar number. The correct model and Windows compatibility are more important than matching a DLL name shown in a search result.
4. Install the package
- Close printing applications.
- Right-click the downloaded HP installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Connect or reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Allow the installer to remove an older HP package if it offers that option.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
After the restart, print a Windows test page:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices or Devices.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer.
- Open Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
The repair worked if the test page prints, the DLL message no longer appears, and the Print Spooler remains running.
If the installer fails, disconnect the printer, restart Windows, and repeat the installation with the old HP software removed. Also check whether HP provides a different package for your Windows version.
If you regularly have to identify several outdated drivers manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention, while the repair or driver installation is completed by the full version; for this specific file, the exact HP model package remains the definitive source.

Fix 2: Remove a stale HP printer and driver package
If you no longer use the printer, restoring hpfllw73.dll is usually unnecessary. A deleted printer can leave its driver or language-monitor reference behind, and the Print Spooler may continue trying to load it.
Remove the printer queue
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices in Windows 11, or Devices in Windows 10.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Remove the old driver
Windows may prevent removal while a queue still uses the driver. After removing the printer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Find the obsolete HP driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Confirm the prompts.
- Restart the computer.
If Windows says the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler first:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Close the Services window.
- Repeat the driver-removal steps.
If the printer is still required, do not remove its driver package. Reinstall the correct HP package instead.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine safely
Security software can remove or quarantine a printer component after an update or repair attempt. Do not restore an unexplained copy of the DLL from the internet.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
hpfllw73.dll, an HP driver installer, or the printer driver directory. - Open the detection details.
- Check the file path and the source of the installation.
- Run a fresh scan.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- The quarantined file came from a trusted HP installation.
- Its path belongs to the installed HP driver package.
- The detection is understood and not an unexplained malware alert.
- You have verified the printer model and installer source.
A safer sequence is to download a fresh package from HP, scan it, and reinstall the complete driver. That restores the DLL together with its INF registration, companion files, permissions, and printer configuration.
If the file was located outside an HP driver directory, or the publisher and package origin are suspicious, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. A missing DLL by itself does not prove malware, but an unexpected location is a reason to investigate.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components when Windows corruption is suspected
System File Checker and DISM are useful when Windows itself has damaged components, update failures, or broader servicing problems. They are not guaranteed to restore an HP-specific language-monitor DLL.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the same HP DLL error remains, return to the HP driver reinstall rather than repeatedly running system scans.
When you are manually repeating DISM and SFC without knowing which Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader system problems and identify repair areas; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the HP package remains the definitive fix for this printer component.
Fix 5: Check the Print Spooler and printer configuration
If the error occurs only during printing, inspect the spooler before changing unrelated Windows files.
Restart the Print Spooler
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it.
- Select Restart.
- Try printing again.
If the spooler stops immediately, an installed printer driver may be damaged.
Clear stuck print jobs
- Open Services with
services.msc. - Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERS
- Press Enter.
- Delete the files inside that folder, not the folder itself.
- Return to Services.
- Right-click Print Spooler.
- Select Start.
- Test the printer.
If the error returns as soon as the printer is selected, remove the old queue and reinstall the driver package.
Fix 6: Check Device Manager for a damaged printer entry
Device Manager can show whether Windows is detecting a driver problem, although it may not identify hpfllw73.dll directly.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Look for the HP printer or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Uninstall Device only if you are ready to reinstall the correct HP package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific HP driver.
Do not select random driver files through Browse my computer. Use the HP installer so Windows receives the correct INF association and supporting files.
Do not use regsvr32 as the normal fix
hpfllw73.dll is a printer language-monitor DLL, not an ordinary application component that users normally register by hand. Microsoft’s regsvr32 utility works only with DLLs that expose the required self-registration entry point.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a reliable repair:
regsvr32 hpfllw73.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32hpfllw73.dll
A registration error does not prove the file is missing, and successful registration would not recreate the printer’s INF association, queue, dependencies, or HP configuration. Reinstall the complete driver or remove the obsolete printer instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- A file with the wrong architecture
- A build for a different HP package
- A file with missing dependencies
- A DLL that does not match the printer’s INF configuration
Copying it into System32 can also make troubleshooting harder by leaving an unrelated copy that Windows or another application may find first.
Use the exact HP printer package from HP’s official support site. If HP no longer supplies a compatible package, consider a Windows inbox driver, a Windows Update driver, or replacing an unsupported printer rather than forcing an obsolete language monitor into Windows.
Architecture and dependency checks
Do not assume that the filename tells you whether hpfllw73.dll is 32-bit or 64-bit. Different HP package builds can differ, and the calling process matters. A 32-bit process generally cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL in the same way.

The safest approach is:
- Identify the exact printer model.
- Select the correct Windows version on HP’s driver page.
- Install the package intended for that system.
- Avoid mixing files from different HP installers.
If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” the missing item may be a dependency rather than hpfllw73.dll itself. Replacing only the named file will not repair that dependency chain.
If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows,” suspect corruption, incompatible architecture, or a mismatched legacy driver. Replace the full package and remove the old queue instead of trying to register or patch one DLL.
If the error appears in a game or unrelated program
There is no reliable evidence that hpfllw73.dll is a legitimate game component or Visual C++ runtime. If a game launcher names it, first determine whether the message is actually connected to an old HP printer utility, a startup entry, or a stale Windows printer package.
Do not install a game DLL from a file archive. Use the game’s own file verification only if the error demonstrably comes from that game installation. Otherwise, inspect installed HP software and printers, then repair or remove the HP package.
When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when the problem clearly began after a recent driver or software change and normal HP removal or reinstallation fails.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Complete the restore.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
System Restore does not replace a proper current HP driver installation. If the printer works after restoration, update it later using the correct HP package rather than restoring individual DLLs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Final verification checklist
The repair is complete when:
- The HP printer appears normally under Printers & scanners.
- A Windows test page prints.
- The Print Spooler starts and stays running.
- The startup or application error no longer appears.
- No stale HP printer queue remains.
- Windows Security shows no unresolved detection for the installed driver.
- The HP package matches the printer model and Windows version.
If the printer is no longer used, the correct result may be removal rather than restoration: delete the old queue, remove its driver package, restart the Print Spooler, and confirm that the recurring hpfllw73.dll message has stopped.
FAQ
Is hpfllw73.dll a Windows system file?
Usually no. It is associated with Hewlett-Packard’s printer Language Monitor software and is installed as part of an HP printer driver.
Which HP printer model uses it?
The filename alone does not establish one exact model. Identify the installed printer and reinstall its matching HP package.
Should I put it in System32?
No. The HP installer must restore the correct package files, INF association, permissions, and printer configuration.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I run regsvr32?
Normally no. A printer language monitor is not routinely repaired through manual DLL registration.
What if I no longer own the printer?
Remove the obsolete printer queue and driver package. Restoring the DLL is unnecessary if no software still needs that printer.
Can SFC restore the file?
SFC can repair protected Windows components, but it should not be expected to restore this HP-specific DLL. Reinstall the HP driver.
What if antivirus quarantined it?
Verify the original HP package and file path first. Do not restore an unexplained DLL download; obtain a fresh HP installer and scan it before reinstalling.
