hpojwia.dll Missing: Repair the Legacy HP Imaging Component

“ This application failed to start because hpojwia.dll was not found.” The hpojwia.dll error usually points to a missing or damaged legacy HP imaging component, not a missing game file or Visual C++ runtime.

The safest repair is to reinstall the complete HP printer or scanner driver package for your exact device. If Windows itself is damaged, repair its component store with DISM and then run System File Checker. Do not download an isolated copy of hpojwia.dll from a random DLL website.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first description that matches what you see:

  • You recently removed or reinstalled an HP printer, scanner, or multifunction device: reinstall the complete HP driver and scanning software.
  • The error appeared after a Windows upgrade or update: install pending Windows updates, then reinstall the current compatible HP package.
  • Several Windows components are reporting missing or corrupted files: run DISM, followed by SFC.
  • Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history, but restore it only if it came from a trusted signed driver package.
  • The error names an old application but you no longer use the HP device: repair or remove that application and inspect its startup entry.
  • The device appears in Windows but scanning or printing fails: use Device Manager to remove the failed device or driver and install the manufacturer package again.
  • You tried regsvr32 hpojwia.dll: stop using that as the primary repair. A WIA driver component is normally installed through its driver package and INF file, not by blindly registering a copied DLL.

The exact application name, executable path, Windows version, HP model, and complete error wording will determine which path is correct.

What hpojwia.dll is

hpojwia.dll is identified as Still Image Device DLL, a legacy component associated with the Windows Image Acquisition architecture and older Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet imaging support.

Microsoft describes Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, as the Windows driver architecture used by scanners, cameras, and other still-image devices. WIA components are installed as part of device driver packages, with INF files identifying the device and its driver files. See Microsoft’s Windows imaging driver documentation and WIA driver architecture guide.

The hpoj prefix is consistent with older HP OfficeJet scanning integration. Public legacy file inventories associate the file with Microsoft Windows and older Windows XP or Vista-era driver packages. Those inventories show that location and build details vary by Windows generation, so there is no single current folder, version, size, or hash that applies to every computer.

You may see references to:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • the Windows component cache
  • a Vista-era DriverStore directory associated with an HP scanning INF package

Do not treat one of those locations as a universal installation instruction. A 32-bit component, a 64-bit Windows installation, and a device driver stored in DriverStore can follow different installation rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Error messages associated with the file

Users may see wording such as:

  • “This application failed to start because hpojwia.dll was not found.”
  • “The file hpojwia.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “Error loading hpojwia.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because hpojwia.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “hpojwia.dll could not be loaded.”

“Module not found” does not always mean that hpojwia.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependencies.

Before changing anything, record:

  1. The application name shown in the error.
  2. The full path of that application.
  3. Your Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  4. The exact HP printer or scanner model.
  5. Whether the device appears in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  6. Whether it appears in Device Manager.
  7. Whether the failure began after an update, antivirus event, device removal, or software installation.

That information prevents you from repairing the wrong program.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP driver package

This is the most likely solution when the error involves an HP printer, scanner, or multifunction device.

Do not search for hpojwia.dll alone. Find the complete driver and software package for the exact HP model and your Windows version.

Remove the existing device

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select the affected HP device.
  5. Choose Remove.
  6. Confirm the removal.
  7. Restart Windows.

If the printer or scanner is not listed, continue with Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Cameras, if present.
  4. Right-click the affected HP entry.
  5. Select Uninstall device.
  6. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you are deliberately removing the old HP package.
  7. Restart the computer.

Install the replacement package

  1. Open HP’s official support site in your browser.
  2. Search for the exact printer or scanner model.
  3. Select the Windows version installed on the computer.
  4. Download the full printer or scanner software and driver package.
  5. Run the installer as an administrator.
  6. Connect or power on the device when the installer requests it.
  7. Restart Windows after installation.
  8. Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  9. Select Add device if Windows has not added it automatically.
  10. Print a test page or open Windows Scan to test scanning.

A full package restores the driver files, dependencies, device configuration, and installation information that a standalone DLL cannot provide.

When manually checking several HP models and driver packages, it is easy to install a nearly matching but incompatible package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or missing drivers and show what needs attention; its repair or driver installation requires the full version, and the exact HP model should still be verified before installation.

Check whether the repair worked

The repair is successful when:

  • the original error no longer appears;
  • the HP device is listed without a warning icon;
  • printing completes normally;
  • scanning works in Windows Scan or the HP application;
  • Device Manager shows no driver error for the device.

If the error remains, continue to Windows Update and the system repair steps below. The application may be loading an old copy or may have its own damaged installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Install Windows updates and use the current compatible driver

An XP- or Vista-era version of hpojwia.dll is not automatically suitable for Windows 10 or Windows 11. The original file may have been valid for an older driver package while the current operating system requires a different compatible driver.

Install updates

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when prompted.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no important updates remain.

Windows may provide a compatible built-in printer driver. If it does not, use the current driver package supplied for the exact HP model.

Add the device again

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices.
  3. Select Printers & scanners.
  4. Select Add device.
  5. Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
  6. If it is not found, select the option to add it manually.
  7. Follow the connection method shown for USB, network, or wireless installation.

If the HP model has no supported driver for the current Windows release, repeatedly copying an old DLL is unlikely to resolve the compatibility problem. Use Windows’ compatible driver where available, or consider replacing hardware that cannot operate correctly on the current system.

Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Use this fix when Windows component files may be damaged, when multiple built-in features are failing, or when reinstalling the HP package did not restore the component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s documented order is DISM first, then SFC.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish.
  3. Leave the window open even if progress appears to pause.

When DISM completes successfully, restart Windows. If it reports that the source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source and Microsoft’s advanced DISM repair guidance rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Run System File Checker

After DISM finishes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the affected HP application or device.

Typical results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not detected as damaged.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the issue persists, review the CBS log or move to driver and application repair.

Repeating SFC without addressing a damaged component store or driver package is unlikely to restore an HP imaging component.

If you want a guided way to identify damaged Windows components instead of repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show detected issues; the repair action requires the full version, and Microsoft’s DISM and SFC remain appropriate built-in repair tools.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate legacy driver file, although a warning should not be ignored automatically.

  1. Open Windows Security from Start.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review entries related to the date the error began.
  5. Expand an entry to see its path, detection name, and action.
  6. Compare the path with the HP driver installation you recognize.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • it came from a trusted HP or Windows driver package;
  • the file path and package are expected;
  • the package is digitally signed or otherwise verified;
  • Windows Security identifies the item as a mistaken detection.

Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item places it back on the device. If the origin is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall the complete official driver package instead. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disable antivirus protection just to make an error disappear.

Fix 5: Inspect Device Manager and the WIA service

A device can remain visible while its driver is unusable.

  4. Look for a yellow warning icon or an entry named Unknown device.
  5. Double-click the entry.
  6. Read the text under Device status.
  7. Select the Driver tab to view the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only when Windows has a suitable local or online driver.
  9. If the device remains broken, select Uninstall Device, restart, and run the complete HP installer again.

Check the Windows Image Acquisition service

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  5. Double-click it.
  6. Set Startup type to Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start) when available.
  7. If the service is stopped, select Start.
  8. Select Apply, then OK.

If WIA will not start, record the error shown in the service dialog and check Event Viewer. A service failure can indicate broader Windows corruption or an incompatible legacy driver.

Fix 6: Repair the application that reports the error

If no HP device is installed, the error may come from an old imaging application or a stale startup entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First identify the calling program:

  1. Note the application name in the error dialog.
  2. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  3. Select Startup apps.
  4. Look for the named program or old HP imaging software.
  5. Right-click it and select Disable temporarily.
  6. Restart and see whether the error returns.

If the error stops, repair or uninstall the old application through:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the program.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.

If the program is still required, reinstall it from its original trusted source after removing the damaged installation. If it belongs to a specific HP device, reinstall the device package as well.

Do not copy the DLL into System32 and SysWOW64

Manually copying hpojwia.dll into both folders is not a valid repair.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 and SysWOW64 serve different architecture roles. A 32-bit application may require a 32-bit component, while a 64-bit process uses 64-bit components. The correct location also depends on the driver package, INF instructions, dependencies, permissions, and Windows servicing rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A copied file can therefore produce:

  • an architecture mismatch;
  • a missing dependency error;
  • a version mismatch with the driver package;
  • a failed signature or servicing state;
  • a new malware risk.

The correct package installer places the component where Windows expects it and registers the associated device information.

Why regsvr32 is usually not the fix

WIA minidrivers are installed as driver components and loaded by the WIA service. Microsoft documents WIA minidrivers as COM-based components with interfaces defined for the imaging architecture, while regsvr32 works only when a DLL supports the expected self-registration entry points.

Running:

regsvr32 hpojwia.dll

may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer was not found.” That does not prove the file is corrupt. It may simply mean that this particular DLL is not designed for manual self-registration.

Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation specifically requires it and the exact DLL is confirmed to support self-registration. For this file, reinstalling the complete WIA or HP driver package is the normal repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a known change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver, application, or Windows configuration change and a restore point is available.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Create a restore point.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose Next.
  6. Select a restore point created before the failure.
  7. Select Scan for affected programs.
  8. Review the drivers and applications that will be changed.
  9. Select Next, then Finish.
  10. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore does not remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, registry settings, system files, and installed programs. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.

FAQ

Is hpojwia.dll a Microsoft file or an HP file?

It is identified as a Microsoft Windows component named “Still Image Device DLL,” but the filename is strongly associated with older HP OfficeJet and scanning driver integration. The practical repair is usually the HP device driver package, not a standalone Windows download.

Is hpojwia.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contains it. It is a legacy component associated with older driver packages, and current Windows versions may use a different compatible driver path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I download hpojwia.dll from a DLL website?

No. A downloaded DLL can be the wrong version or architecture, lack dependencies, fail signature checks, and introduce malware. Use Windows Update, Microsoft servicing tools, and the official HP support package for the exact device.

Do I need both a System32 and a SysWOW64 copy?

No. Do not place the file manually in either folder. Windows and the driver installer determine the correct architecture and location.

Can DISM and SFC repair an HP driver?

They can repair damaged Windows component files and protected system files, but they do not replace the need for the correct HP driver package. Reinstall the device software when the problem is specific to the printer or scanner.

What if the error says “specified module could not be found”?

That message can indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing hpojwia.dll. Reinstall the complete driver package, check Device Manager, and run DISM followed by SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I collect if the problem remains?

Record the exact error, application name and path, Windows build, HP model, Device Manager status, Event Viewer entry, whether the file exists, and whether the file is digitally signed. That information is more useful than copying another version of the DLL.
