“hposrl05.dll” error messages
Windows may show one of these messages when an old HP printer component cannot load:
- “The program can’t start because hposrl05.dll is missing from your computer.”

These are commonly reported error variants, not an official HP error catalogue. The wording can vary between Windows versions and printer software.
The 60-second answer
hposrl05.dll is a legacy Hewlett-Packard printer-driver component associated with HP Printing System for Windows, also described in older metadata as the HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows.
The safest repair is not to download the DLL separately. Remove the affected HP printer and its stale queue, then install the complete driver package for the exact printer model from HP’s official Software and Drivers portal. If the printer is no longer installed, remove its obsolete queue and driver instead of adding hposrl05.dll to Windows.

Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. Do not run regsvr32 unless the printer package specifically requires it.
What causes hposrl05.dll errors
The file is normally encountered with an old HP print-driver installation rather than as a standard Windows component. Historical records place it under a path similar to:
C:WindowsSystem32spooldriversw32x863
That path is consistent with an older 32-bit printer-driver package. It is not the normal location for a Microsoft system DLL.
The error can appear when you:
- Add or use an old HP printer
- Start a print job
- Install, repair, migrate, or remove an HP printer package
- Recover an old Windows installation
- Update a printer driver unsuccessfully
- Remove printer software incompletely
- Restore a quarantined or cleaned-up driver file
A message saying that the specified module could not be found does not always mean that hposrl05.dll itself is absent. The file may still exist while one of its dependencies is missing. That is another reason to repair the complete printer package rather than replacing one DLL.
Public file metadata reports a historical version in the 2000.1109 series, a size of roughly 371 KB, and a 32-bit Win32 build. These details come from third-party records, not a current HP file manifest. The exact HP models and original package name could not be verified.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact HP printer driver
This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs to a printer-driver package. A complete installation restores the INF entries, dependent files, spooler configuration, and printer association that a loose DLL cannot provide.
Remove the affected printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the HP printer that produces the error.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Also check for duplicate or obsolete queues:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Hardware and Sound.
- Select Devices and Printers.
- Right-click any duplicate or obsolete HP printer.
- Select Remove device.
Install the correct package
- Open HP’s official Software and Drivers page.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the Windows version installed on the computer.
- Choose the full-feature or full-solution package when HP provides one.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB or network setup.
- Add the printer again.
- Print a test page from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → your printer → Printer properties.
The repair worked if the printer installs without the DLL message and the test page prints successfully. If the installer cannot find the printer, disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, verify that the printer is powered on, or use the network connection details requested by the installer.
If the printer is too old for a current HP package, Windows may offer an in-box driver with basic printing features. Select Add device under Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, then allow Windows to search for the printer. Basic features may work even when the original HP control software is no longer supported.

Fix 2: Remove an orphaned printer queue or driver
If no HP printer is currently connected, a stale queue may still reference hposrl05.dll.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Remove every obsolete HP queue.

- Remove duplicate HP entries.
- Press Windows + R, type

Fix 3: Update the printer through Windows
A damaged or incompatible legacy driver can sometimes be replaced with a Windows-compatible driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers or Print queues.
- Right-click the affected HP printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any offered driver.
- Restart Windows.
- Print a test page.
If the printer is listed under Other devices or has a warning icon, right-click it and select Uninstall device. Restart Windows, then return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and select Add device.
A 64-bit version of Windows does not make an old 32-bit printer DLL into a 64-bit driver. The available metadata identifies hposrl05.dll as a legacy 32-bit component, while contradictory records do not establish a genuine 64-bit build. Use the architecture supplied by the complete printer package, not a DLL labelled for the architecture of your choice.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
hposrl05.dll. - Check its original path, detection name, and publisher information.
- Do not restore the file if it was found in a temporary folder, download directory, or unrelated application folder.
- If it was clearly part of a trusted HP printer installation, reinstall the complete driver from HP instead of restoring only the DLL.
- Run Scan options → Full scan if the file was found outside the printer-driver directory.
If the error began immediately after quarantine, reinstalling the printer package is still preferable because it restores the file together with its dependencies and configuration.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other Windows features are damaged
hposrl05.dll is not identified as a protected Windows component, so System File Checker is not expected to recreate it reliably. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself also shows corruption, broken system features, or problems with printing infrastructure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, retry the printer installation. If both commands complete without repairing anything, return to the HP driver and queue-removal steps.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed can waste time when the actual problem is an incomplete third-party printer package. Why regsvr32 usually does not work
Do not run this as a generic repair:
regsvr32 hposrl05.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft documents its syntax and purpose separately from printer-driver installation.
Printer drivers are normally installed through an INF-based driver package. The package registers the printer driver, print processor, dependent files, and spooler settings in the appropriate way. A failed regsvr32 command does not prove that the DLL is damaged.
The same applies to manually copying the file into both System32 and SysWOW64. Those folders have specific 64-bit and 32-bit purposes, and the correct printer-driver destination is determined by the package. A copied file may be ignored, may have the wrong architecture, or may create a second problem.

If the error returns after reinstalling
Check which queue or driver is requesting the file:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Applications and Services Logs.
- Expand Microsoft → Windows → PrintService.
- Review the Operational log.
- Look for the printer queue or driver name mentioned near the failure time.
If the same obsolete queue keeps returning, remove it again and delete its old driver package through printui /s /t2. If the printer is unsupported on your Windows release, use a Windows built-in driver if available. Otherwise, replacing the legacy printer may be more practical than forcing an old driver to load.

System Restore is reasonable when the failure began immediately after a driver or software change and no current HP package works. Choose a restore point from before that change and preserve personal files.
FAQ
Is hposrl05.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is identified as a legacy HP printer-driver component, not a Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or Visual C++ redistributable.
Can I download hposrl05.dll by itself?
That is not recommended. A random copy may contain the wrong version, architecture, altered contents, or malware, and it will not restore the printer package that loads the file.
Should I copy it to System32?
