hpovst08.dll belongs to old Hewlett-Packard scanning software, not to Windows itself. If Windows reports that hpovst08.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair or remove the affected HP printer package instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
hpovst08.dll is identified as HP Scan VendorSetup/Co-Installer, a component of hp digital imaging – hp all-in-one series software from Hewlett-Packard Co. It was used by older HP printer and scanner installation packages.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact HP model that installed it. It may be associated with an all-in-one printer, scanner software, an old driver package, or an installation component left behind after an upgrade or failed removal.
Historical file inventories identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. Some records report version 4.2.0.168 and a size of approximately 92 KB, while other historical inventories show larger copies. Treat those values as clues, not as a specification for every legitimate copy.

Fix 1: Repair the exact HP printer or scanner package
This is the most likely solution. Do not begin by copying hpovst08.dll into a Windows folder.
Identify the affected HP device
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Write down the exact HP model.
- Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for entries containing:
- HP
- HP Digital Imaging
- HP Photosmart
- HP Deskjet
- HP Officejet
- HP LaserJet
- HP Scan
- HP Solution Center
If the error names a particular HP executable, installer, or scanner utility, record that name too. It identifies the software that should be repaired.
Remove the damaged installation
For a USB printer or scanner, disconnect the USB cable first.

- Select the affected HP device.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the HP printer software and related HP imaging entries.
- If the entry is not present, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Remove old HP printer, scanner, and Digital Imaging software.
- Restart Windows.
If the package refuses to uninstall, remove the printer from Printers & scanners, restart, and try the uninstall again. Avoid deleting random HP folders before the uninstall process has finished.
Install the correct package
- Open HP’s official support site in your browser.
- Search for the exact printer or all-in-one model.
- Select the version of Windows you are using.
- Download the current full-feature software package if HP provides one.
- Run the installer by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Connect the USB cable only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Test both printing and scanning.
If HP no longer provides compatible full-feature software, use the current HP app or the built-in Windows printer and scanner driver where available. An old device may print successfully with a basic driver even though its original scanning utility cannot run.
A successful repair usually means that the error no longer appears during startup or installation, the HP software opens, and a test page or scan completes.
Fix 2: Remove stale devices and driver entries
A failed installation can leave an old printer or imaging device registered in Windows. The next installer may then keep calling the damaged component.

Remove the printer
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select every unused instance of the affected HP printer.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for an old or warning-marked HP device.
- Right-click only the device you have identified as obsolete.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the failed old package.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the correct HP package.
Do not remove unrelated printers, scanners, USB devices, or Microsoft imaging components. If the device is still in use, leave it installed and repair its software instead.
If the current driver installation is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. The exact HP model package remains the correct fix when the file belongs to a legacy HP application.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
If hpovst08.dll disappeared immediately after a security scan, Windows Security may have quarantined it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that names
hpovst08.dllor the HP installation folder. - Check the file path, publisher, and detection details.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the missing filename. Restore it only if it came from a legitimate HP installation and the publisher and location are trustworthy. A random DLL downloaded from the internet is not evidence that the quarantined file was safe.
The safer response is usually to uninstall the damaged HP package and reinstall it from HP’s official support software. Do not create a blanket antivirus exclusion for an entire download folder or system directory.
After reinstalling, run a Quick scan in Windows Security. If an unrelated program is requesting the HP DLL, perform a Full scan and investigate the executable path.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components
DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected system files. They generally do not restore an HP-owned DLL that was removed from an HP application folder, but they can fix Windows servicing problems that prevent a driver package from installing.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the HP installation.
DISM may take time and can appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is working. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
If you regularly repeat these commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan detects; repair actions are handled by the full version. This is optional, and reinstalling the HP package remains the definitive repair for an HP application DLL.
For authoritative command details, use Microsoft’s documentation for DISM image repair and SFC and Windows repair.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, failed HP setup, or cleanup operation.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back drivers, system settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before proceeding. Microsoft provides additional information in its System Restore guidance.

Fix 6: Check architecture and file location
A historical inventory identifies hpovst08.dll as a 32-bit file. That is normal for older HP software, even on 64-bit Windows. The operating system’s bitness does not mean you should download a “64-bit replacement.”
On 64-bit Windows:
- 64-bit system files normally use
C:WindowsSystem32. - 32-bit applications may use the Windows compatibility layer and redirected paths involving
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - An HP application may also keep its DLL inside its own installation directory.
Windows’ naming is confusing: System32 is commonly the native 64-bit system directory, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit system components. Do not copy hpovst08.dll into either directory as a general repair.
Instead, check the location named by the error or by the calling HP program. A legitimate copy may be in the original HP installation folder or in a temporary installer extraction folder. The path, digital signature, and associated executable matter more than the filename alone.
The “specified module could not be found” message also does not prove that the named DLL is absent. Windows may have found hpovst08.dll but failed to load another DLL that it depends on. Reinstalling the complete HP package repairs those relationships more safely than replacing one file.
Do not use regsvr32 as a universal fix
regsvr32 is appropriate only for a DLL that is designed to expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
hpovst08.dll is described as an HP scan vendor setup or co-installer component. It should normally be installed and invoked by the HP setup process, not manually registered.

If you run regsvr32 and receive an error such as “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found,” that does not prove Windows is missing a runtime. It usually means the DLL is not intended for manual registration. Stop there and repair the HP package.

- A 32-bit or 64-bit architecture mismatch
- Missing dependent files
- An unsigned or incorrectly located copy
- A recurring error after the next update or reinstall
It can also hide the real problem, such as a damaged HP installer, an incompatible scanner package, or a missing dependency. Never place an unverified DLL in System32, SysWOW64, an HP folder, or an application directory simply because an error message names that location.
Use the official HP support page for the exact model, the current HP app when supported, or a Windows built-in driver. If no compatible software exists, removing the obsolete HP package may be safer than preserving it.
If the error appears at every startup
When the printer is no longer used, the correct fix may be removal rather than restoration.
- Uninstall the old HP software from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the old printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry clearly belonging to the removed HP software.
- Restart again.
Do not disable unknown startup items solely because they appear near the HP entry. If the message continues, use Task Manager, Event Viewer, or the error dialog to identify the executable that is requesting the DLL.

FAQ
Is hpovst08.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows operating-system component. It is associated with legacy HP Digital Imaging software for HP all-in-one devices.

Which HP printer installed it?
The filename cannot identify the exact model. Several older HP printer and scanner packages may have used related imaging components. Check installed programs, old printer entries, and the path named by the error.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts and will not repair a missing dependency. Install the correct HP package instead.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical inventories identify it as 32-bit Win32. Individual copies should still be checked by their package and digital signature. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit HP applications through WOW64.
Can SFC restore hpovst08.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not ordinary files belonging to an HP application. Use SFC and DISM when Windows corruption may be blocking installation, then reinstall the HP package.
Should I restore it from antivirus quarantine?
Only after verifying that the original file came from a trusted HP installation and that its publisher and location are legitimate. Reinstalling the official package is generally safer.
Why does the error say “the specified module could not be found” when the DLL exists?
That message can refer to a dependency required by the DLL. A complete HP package repair is more reliable than replacing the named file alone.
What if I no longer use the HP printer?
Uninstall the obsolete HP software and remove its orphaned startup entry. You do not need to restore a legacy component solely to stop an error from unused software.
Does regsvr32 hpovst08.dll fix the problem?
Not routinely. A setup co-installer is not automatically a self-registering DLL. Use the HP installer rather than manually registering it.
What if no current HP driver supports my device?
Try the current HP app or a Windows built-in printer or scanner driver. If those do not support the required functions, the old software may be incompatible with the current Windows version, and replacing the software or hardware may be the practical solution.
