Public file records describe it as a 32-bit file, version 1.0.0.0, with a size of about 0.52 MB. Those details are associated with third-party file records rather than an accessible HP manifest, so use them for identification only. They do not tell you which exact LaserJet models included the file.
The name suggests a legacy HP scanning component, probably used by older HP LaserJet software. A 32-bit HP application can require a 32-bit DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Do not download a 64-bit replacement simply because your computer runs 64-bit Windows.

The exact wording can vary. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that the DLL exists but a dependency required by it is missing.
This is not established as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or Windows system DLL. Do not begin by repairing Visual C++ or copying the file into C:WindowsSystem32.

Fix 1: Identify the exact HP printer model
Do this before downloading anything. LaserJet packages are model-specific, and installing a similarly named package can leave the same scan component missing.

- Record the complete model name, including suffixes such as
MFP,dn,dw,fn, orfdn. - In Windows, open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the HP printer and note the displayed name.
- If the printer is not listed, open Control Panel, select View devices and printers, and check there.
- Record whether Windows 10 or Windows 11 is installed and whether the system is 64-bit.
To check the Windows architecture, open Settings > System > About and read System type.
Use HP’s official printer driver and software portal by opening HP Support and choosing Software and Driver Downloads, then entering the exact printer model. Select the current full-feature driver, full software package, or HP-recommended scanning package when one is available.
For an older LaserJet all-in-one, HP may provide only basic print and scan support for a newer Windows release. Some older models do not have current HP Scan software. In that situation, Windows-compatible scanning software such as Windows Fax and Scan may be the supported alternative.
Fix 2: Cleanly reinstall the HP scanning package
This is the most likely solution for hpscantsdrvwn8.dll errors.
Remove the printer and HP software
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable. If it is connected over a network, leave it powered on but do not start the installer yet.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for entries beginning with HP, the printer model, or LaserJet.
- Uninstall the HP printer software, HP scanning software, and model-specific driver entries.
- If an HP uninstall utility appears, allow it to remove the associated software.
- Restart Windows.
You can also use the older interface:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Remove the relevant HP printer and scanning programs.
- Restart the computer.
After restarting, remove the old printer entry:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
If the device remains in Control Panel, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, and choose Remove device.

Install the correct package
- Open HP Support’s printer driver page.
- Enter the exact model.
- Select your Windows version if HP asks.
- Download the Full Feature Driver, Full Software and Drivers, or the package HP recommends for scanning.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Choose the recommended installation option.
- Keep the printer disconnected until the installer asks for it.
- Connect the USB cable or select the network printer when prompted.
- Finish the installation.
- Restart Windows again if the installer requests it.
Test scanning through the newly installed HP application or Windows scanning software. The fix worked if the scan application opens without the DLL message and can acquire a page from the printer.
If the installer cannot detect the printer, disconnect USB again, remove stale printer entries, restart, and run the installer before reconnecting the cable. For network printers, confirm that the computer and printer are on the same network and temporarily check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners for duplicate entries.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a genuine HP component. It can also detect a modified or unsafe file, so do not restore it automatically.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
hpscantsdrvwn8.dll, HP software, or the HP installer. - Open the detection and read its path, name, and action.
- If the file was quarantined, first remove the damaged HP installation and reinstall the official HP package.
- Restore the quarantined file only when the HP installation is known to be genuine and the detection is clearly a false positive.
Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion simply to suppress the error. If the detection identifies malware, leave the file quarantined and run a security scan instead.
For a deeper check, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and select Scan now. Save open work first because Windows will restart.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall the printer driver through Device Manager
Device Manager is useful when Windows retained a broken driver entry after the HP software was removed.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the HP printer, scanner, an unknown device, or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows displays Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it when available.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific HP package from HP Support.
Do not choose a random driver from the list merely because it contains the word “LaserJet.” The wrong package may restore printing while leaving scanning unavailable.

Manually comparing printer models, driver architectures, and old package remnants can be time-consuming, especially after a Windows upgrade. When Device Manager does not show the scanner
Some HP scanner components appear only while the printer is connected and powered on. Check all of these locations:
- Printers
- Print queues
- Imaging devices
- Universal Serial Bus controllers
- Other devices
If Windows lists an unknown device, right-click it, select Properties, and read the Device status message under the General tab. Do not force an unrelated driver onto it. Remove the old HP software and rerun the correct HP installer instead.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are secondary fixes here. They repair protected Windows components, but hpscantsdrvwn8.dll is attributed to HP, so these commands may not restore it.

- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test the HP scanner again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the HP installation remains the more likely problem. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
Repeating these commands will not recreate an HP DLL that was never installed. Outbyte PC Repair can simplify the manual process by showing system issues during its scan; its full version performs repairs, but reinstalling the correct HP package is still the direct fix for an HP-owned component.
Fix 6: Check Windows Features and scanning services
Windows Features does not normally contain hpscantsdrvwn8.dll, but checking optional scanning support can clarify whether the problem is with Windows or HP software.
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available features without enabling unrelated components.
- If your organization or HP documentation specifically requires a listed scanning or legacy compatibility feature, enable it and restart.
- Otherwise, close the dialog and continue with the HP driver reinstall.
Do not enable random legacy features to replace the missing DLL.
You can also check the Windows Image Acquisition service:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic if appropriate.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
WIA can support scanning, but starting it will not recreate the HP file. If the service is already running and the DLL message remains, return to the HP package repair.

The correct source is the exact HP driver or full-feature software package for the printer model. If HP no longer provides the original scanning application for that model and Windows supplies only basic scanning support, use the supported Windows scanning method rather than forcing an old DLL into a system directory.

regsvr32 registers certain self-registering COM DLLs. It is not a universal command for fixing every missing or damaged DLL.
A DLL must provide the appropriate DllRegisterServer entry point for registration to apply. There is no verified reason to assume that hpscantsdrvwn8.dll is a self-registering COM component. Running commands such as these at random can produce another error without repairing HP scanning:
regsvr32 hpscantsdrvwn8.dll
Do not run regsvr32 unless an official HP installer or support instruction specifically requires it and gives the correct file path. Reinstalling the HP package allows its installer to place and configure all required components together.
If the error appears after uninstalling HP software
An old startup item, scheduled task, shortcut, or service may still reference the removed file.
- Read the complete error dialog and note the application or executable named.
- Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error and select Properties.
- Inspect the Target field.
- If it points to an old HP application, remove that shortcut.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable an obsolete HP entry if its path clearly points to removed software.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for the same stale entry.
- Restart Windows.
- If the error disappears but scanning is unavailable, install the correct HP package.
Do not delete unknown registry entries merely because they contain the DLL name. The exact executable path and printer model are more useful for identifying the stale reference.
If reinstalling still fails
Collect these details before trying another package:
- Exact HP LaserJet model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- 32-bit or 64-bit Windows
- Complete wording of the error
- Application or executable named in the dialog
- Whether the DLL exists anywhere in the HP installation folder
- Whether Windows Security quarantined it
- Whether the printer is connected by USB or network
- Whether printing works while scanning fails
If the DLL exists but the application says it cannot load, the problem may be a missing dependency, incorrect installation path, incompatible legacy application, or stale shortcut. Do not move the DLL. Remove the HP package again and install the package intended for the exact model and Windows release.
If the failure began immediately after a known recent system change and a suitable restore point exists, System Restore can be considered. It is not a substitute for obtaining the correct HP installer and may not restore a missing third-party file.
