The 60-second answer
hpzisn12.dll is an HP printer-software component described as SNMP Network Interface (Windows). It belongs to the HP SNMP Windows portion of an HP printer driver or utility, not to Windows itself.
The safest fix is to remove the affected HP printer and reinstall the correct driver for the exact printer model and Windows architecture. Do not download hpzisn12.dll from a DLL download sites site or copy a loose replacement into System32. A replacement file can be the wrong architecture, incompatible with the rest of the driver, or unsafe.
If the error appeared after removing a printer, installing an HP update, upgrading Windows, or an antivirus quarantine, the HP package is the first place to investigate.

What the error means
The filename is associated with HP’s bidirectional printer communication software. The “SNMP Network Interface” description refers to communication and status handling between Windows and an HP printer, especially across a network.
It is not a normal Windows component, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET assembly. Windows may display the error when:
- You print or open printer properties.
- An HP printer utility starts.
- Windows starts and loads an old printer helper.
- A network printer is queried.
- An HP driver was only partly removed.
- Antivirus software quarantined part of the driver.
- A driver update installed files for the wrong printer or architecture.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpzisn12.dll itself is absent. Windows can show the same message when the DLL exists but one of its required dependencies cannot load.
Common error messages
| Message | What it usually indicates |
|---|---|
| “hpzisn12.dll is missing from your computer” | The HP package is incomplete, removed, or damaged. |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because hpzisn12.dll was not found” | An HP-related process cannot locate its driver component. |
| “Error loading hpzisn12.dll” | The file or a dependency failed during loading. |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The named DLL or one of its dependencies is unavailable. |
| “hpzisn12.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | The file may be corrupted, incompatible, truncated, or the wrong architecture. |
| “Runtime Error – hpzisn12.dll” | An HP utility or printer-related process failed while starting. |
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer driver
This is the most likely solution. Reinstalling the complete package restores the DLL together with the other HP files, services, configuration, and dependencies it expects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Identify the affected printer
Check the error context first. Note the printer model if the message appears while printing or opening printer properties.
If several HP printers are installed, check each one:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Open each HP printer entry.
- Record the model name and whether it is USB, Wi-Fi, or network-connected.
If the error appears during startup rather than printing, the error may come from an orphaned HP utility or driver left behind after a printer was removed.
2. Disconnect a USB printer
If the printer uses USB:
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect its USB cable.
- Leave it disconnected while removing the old software.
This prevents Windows from immediately reinstalling the damaged or incomplete package during cleanup.
3. Remove the printer
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Restart Windows after removing it.
4. Download the driver from HP
Use HP’s official support and driver page, search for the exact printer model, and select the installed Windows version. Choose the package that matches the printer rather than a similarly named model.
HP driver availability depends on the selected operating system. An old printer may not have a current HP package for Windows 10 or Windows 11. If HP provides an archived package, use that package only when it is listed for the correct model and Windows release.
Do not combine hpzisn12.dll from one HP package with files from another. Different printer models and driver generations can use different supporting files.

Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through multiple driver versions and checking which printer components are stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair and driver installation require the full version. Reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for this HP-specific DLL.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove a driver component if it detects suspicious behavior or cannot verify the file. Do not restore the file immediately just because the error began after quarantine.
Check Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
hpzisn12.dll, an HP driver, or the affected printer installer.
Before restoring anything, verify:
- The file was installed by an HP printer package.
- Its location is a printer-driver directory rather than an unrelated application folder.
- The installer came from HP’s official support page.
- The file’s publisher and digital signature are appropriate.
- A current security scan does not identify it as malicious.
You can scan an individual file through Windows Security by following Microsoft’s file scanning guidance.
If Windows Security quarantined the file and the HP installer restores it immediately, do not disable protection globally. Keep the file quarantined and submit it to the security vendor for analysis, then reinstall the driver from HP.
Run a full scan if the file is in an unexpected location. If malware may be persistent, use Microsoft Defender Offline.
Fix 3: Check the file location and driver architecture
The file has appeared in HP printer-driver locations such as:
C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSW32X863
C:WindowsSystem32spoolDRIVERSx643
Older installations can also place it in a printer-driver directory under DriverStoreFileRepository.
A printer-driver folder supports the HP connection. A copy in an unrelated game, browser, office application, or random application directory needs more investigation.
Recommended Free Tools
Check the Windows architecture
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
A 64-bit Windows installation needs the appropriate 64-bit driver package. A 32-bit driver may appear under the W32X86 printer-driver tree, while 64-bit components commonly appear under x64. The existence of similarly named files in both locations does not mean they are interchangeable.
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver directory, or vice versa. Do not replace the file with a build taken from another printer model.
Check the installed driver
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Look for the affected HP printer driver.
- Note its model and provider.
- Remove it only if you are ready to reinstall it.
If the command does not open the properties window, use this alternative:

Fix 4: Remove an orphaned HP driver package
Repeated reinstallations can leave a stale printer entry or old driver package that continues to call hpzisn12.dll.
First remove the printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Then:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the old HP driver under Drivers.
- Select Remove.
- Choose the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows offers it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current HP package again.
Microsoft also documents removing devices and driver packages through Device Manager.
Device Manager steps are:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected HP device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device if that option appears.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct HP driver.
Do not manually delete random files from System32, DriverStore, or the spool directories. Windows may share those packages with other printers, and manual deletion can create additional spooler problems.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are secondary repairs here. hpzisn12.dll is normally supplied by HP printer software, so these commands are not a guaranteed way to restore it.
Use them when other Windows files are also failing, the problem began after an interrupted update, or the HP installer itself will not run correctly.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the printer.
Microsoft explains the sequence in its DISM and SFC repair guidance and Windows image repair documentation.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer. If it reports no integrity violations, that does not clear the HP driver. SFC protects Windows system files, not every third-party printer DLL.
When the HP driver is damaged but Windows is healthy, return to Fix 1 and reinstall the complete HP package.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of checking Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC less frustrating; its free scan identifies reported problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the HP printer software remains necessary when the missing file belongs to that package.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful when hpzisn12.dll worked before a printer update, Windows upgrade, software removal, or driver installation.

System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can roll back drivers, applications, registry settings, and system files. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore documentation.
After restoring, prevent the issue from returning by reinstalling the correct HP driver rather than restoring a loose DLL.
Do not run regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its behavior in the regsvr32 command reference.
There is no verified indication that hpzisn12.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX library. Running:
regsvr32 hpzisn12.dll
will not recreate a missing HP driver package and may produce “DllRegisterServer was not found.” It can also confuse troubleshooting by making the failure look like a registration problem.
Repair the complete HP printer installation instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not enable Windows SNMP as a substitute
The phrase “SNMP Network Interface” describes the HP component. It does not mean that enabling a generic Windows SNMP feature will restore hpzisn12.dll.
Adding Windows features will not rebuild the HP printer package. Install the driver intended for the printer model and Windows architecture.
What if HP no longer supports the printer?
Some older printers do not have a current HP package for the Windows version you are using. Check HP’s official support page for the exact model and operating system.
If no compatible package exists, possible paths include:

- Use a Windows built-in class driver if it provides the required printing functions.
- Use a newer universal HP driver when HP lists one for the device.
- Connect the printer through a supported print server or another compatible Windows computer.
- Replace the printer if its essential functions cannot work with a supported driver.
Do not force an unrelated model’s DLL into the old package. A printer may print with a basic driver while losing scanning, status, duplex, tray, or network-management features.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Check which process is requesting the DLL:
- Note when the message appears.
- Check whether printing works despite the message.
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Review Windows Logs > Application around the failure time.
- Look for the application or executable named in the event.
- Check whether the executable belongs to an HP utility, printer monitor, or unrelated program.
If printing works but the error appears at every startup, the likely cause is stale HP startup software or an orphaned printer entry. Remove the old HP utility or printer package rather than replacing the DLL.

If the error occurs inside an unrelated application folder, that application may be incorrectly invoking an HP dependency. Reinstall the application only after confirming its executable path and the relationship to the printer software.
Frequently asked questions
Is hpzisn12.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence identifies it as an HP printer-software component associated with HP SNMP Windows and bidirectional printer communication.
Which HP printer installed it?
The filename does not identify one universal printer model. It has appeared in multiple HP printer-driver packages, so identify the installed model and reinstall that model’s package.
Can I download hpzisn12.dll separately?
Do not use random DLL download sites websites. A loose file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, be incompatible with the rest of the driver, or leave the actual missing dependency unresolved. Use the complete driver installer from HP.
Will SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Because hpzisn12.dll normally comes from HP printer software, reinstalling that software is the appropriate repair.
Should I copy it into C:WindowsSystem32?
No. The correct location depends on the printer driver and Windows architecture. Copying it into System32 can create a mismatched installation and does not register the complete driver.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The message can refer to a dependency required by hpzisn12.dll, not only to the named file. A damaged or incomplete HP package can produce this result.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone cannot prove that a copy is safe or malicious. Check its location, publisher, digital signature, installer source, and antivirus result. A copy in an HP printer-driver directory is more consistent with the expected role than a copy in an unrelated application folder.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does regsvr32 repair it?
Usually no. There is no verified evidence that this HP printer component exposes the registration entry point required by regsvr32. Reinstall the printer driver instead.
What if the error appears only during startup?
Look for an old HP utility, printer monitor, or orphaned driver that Windows still tries to load. Remove the unused printer and old driver package, then reinstall only the printer software you still need.
