hpzjrd01.dll is a Hewlett-Packard application file usually associated with older HP printer or Photosmart software, not with Windows itself. If Windows reports that hpzjrd01.dll is missing, reinstall the matching HP printer package first; if you no longer use that printer, remove the obsolete HP startup entry instead.
What this file actually does
The file is named hpzjrd01.dll, with the internal name hpzjrd01, and is identified as part of Hewlett Packard software. Available evidence describes it as an older 32-bit HP application component.
The strongest usage reports connect it with hphmon06.exe, an HP Photosmart printer monitor associated with media-card or flash-card functions. That monitor may start with Windows even when the main printer driver is no longer being used.
This explains why the error can appear while printing still works. The missing file may belong to an optional monitoring utility rather than the core print driver.

Common messages include:
- “The application failed to start because hpzjrd01.dll was not found.”
- “hphmon06.exe — unable to locate component.”
- “hpzjrd01.dll is missing.”
- “Error loading hpzjrd01.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because hpzjrd01.dll was not found.”
The exact wording depends on which HP executable is trying to load the file.
Do not treat this as a missing Microsoft runtime. There is no evidence that hpzjrd01.dll belongs to Windows, Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Windows Update. It should not normally be copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer software
This is the safest repair when you still use the printer and the error started after an uninstall, upgrade, cleanup, or failed installation.
1. Identify the printer model
Look at the printer itself, its label, or any existing printer entry in Windows. Record the complete model name, including the series number. Do not install software for a similar-looking HP model.
To check Windows’ printer list:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the HP printer name.
- Open its entry and note the model.
If the printer is connected by USB, disconnect it before removing the old HP software. Leave it disconnected until the installer asks you to connect it.
2. Remove the old HP package
On Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for HP.
- Uninstall the printer-specific software, HP Photosmart software, HP imaging software, or another package clearly belonging to that printer.
- Follow the removal wizard.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the relevant HP software.
- Choose Uninstall.
You can also use the older Control Panel route:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the HP printer software.
- Select Uninstall.
Do not remove unrelated HP software unless you have identified it as part of the old printer installation.
3. Restart Windows
Restart after the uninstall completes. This clears services and startup processes that may still have the old HP files open.
4. Download the current package from HP
Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page, search for the exact printer model, and select the installed Windows version.

Use the Typical or Recommended installation unless you have a reason to choose a custom setup. Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission or the setup does not start correctly.
Reconnect the printer only when prompted. If the package offers both a basic driver and a full package, use the full package first when restoring the missing HP monitor.
5. Restart and test
Restart both Windows and the printer after installation. Then check:
- The startup warning no longer appears.
- The HP printer remains listed under Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- The HP utility opens without reporting another missing file.
If printing works but the startup message remains, the old monitor may be launching from a separate startup entry. Continue with the removal steps below rather than copying hpzjrd01.dll manually.

First remove the associated HP software through Installed apps or Programs and Features. Restart Windows, then check whether the message has disappeared.
If it remains:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps. On some Windows versions, select the Startup tab.
- Look for an HP item, especially one referring to
hphmon06.exe, Photosmart, a printer monitor, or the old printer model. - Right-click the clearly identified obsolete entry.
- Select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling a startup item prevents it from launching, but it does not remove the underlying software. If the entry returns or the uninstall is incomplete, use the HP uninstaller again.
Do not disable an entry merely because its name contains “HP.” Identify the executable and confirm that it belongs to the unused printer software.

If no HP software remains and the warning continues, inspect the dialog carefully. Note the executable named in the message and its location before changing anything. An old shortcut, scheduled task, service, or registry startup value may still be calling the missing program.
Avoid deleting arbitrary registry entries. If you must remove a clearly identified obsolete startup value, back up the relevant registry key first and remove only that value.
Fix 3: Repair a failed HP uninstall
An incomplete uninstall can leave the monitor executable behind while removing its DLL. Try HP’s removal process again, then restart.
If the package will not uninstall:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Apps > Installed apps and remove any remaining printer-specific HP software.
If Windows still refuses to remove the package, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter if it is available for your Windows installation. Then reinstall the correct package from HP if you still need the printer, or leave the software removed if you do not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an old legitimate file, but a suspicious file can also use an HP-like name. Restore it only when you can verify that it came from a trusted HP installer.
To inspect the result:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
hpzjrd01.dll. - Review its original path, detection name, and action.
- If the file came from an authentic HP installation and the detection is demonstrably false, follow Windows Security’s Restore or Allow option.
- If the location is unexpected, the file lacks trustworthy origin information, or the detection remains credible, leave it quarantined.
Microsoft explains that restoring a quarantined file places it back on the device and may cause Defender to detect it again. The safer response to an uncertain detection is to remove the old HP package and reinstall it from HP’s official printer support page.
Run a scan after dealing with the detection:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
Fix 5: Try the basic driver or Windows printer support
Very old HP software may not support the current Windows release. In that situation, the full Photosmart package may fail even though the printer can still operate.
First remove the old HP package and restart. Then search HP’s page for the exact model and try its supported Basic Driver if one is offered.

You can also let Windows install a built-in driver:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to detect the printer.
- Follow the prompts.
For a USB printer, reconnect the cable only after Windows is ready to detect it. For a network printer, confirm that the printer and computer are on the same network.

A basic driver may restore printing without restoring HP Photosmart monitoring features. That is acceptable if the printer works and the startup warning is gone.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the printer driver
If the printer appears with an error icon, disappears after installation, or prints incorrectly, repair the driver separately.
Use Device Manager
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Locate the HP device.
- Right-click it and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Install any offered driver.
- Restart Windows.
If the device remains broken:
- Return to Device Manager.
- Right-click the HP printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific HP driver.
Do not select a random printer driver because its name looks close. Use the exact model and Windows version.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking several packages and matching legacy hardware to the current Windows release. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix for this HP application DLL.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when other programs are failing
hpzjrd01.dll is a third-party HP application file, so Windows repair commands normally will not recreate it. Use DISM and SFC when you also see failures involving Windows components, built-in applications, system services, or multiple unrelated programs.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the results. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, review the broader Windows repair guidance rather than repeatedly running the same command.

They repair protected Windows components, not arbitrary application DLLs.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can waste time when the actual problem is an orphaned HP startup entry. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what needs attention; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the HP program is still the definitive solution when only this HP file is missing.
Do not use regsvr32 as the default fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that hpzjrd01.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
Running this command:
regsvr32 hpzjrd01.dll
will usually fail if the DLL does not provide the required registration entry point. A message such as “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found” does not mean the file needs to be downloaded or moved.
Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration utility, not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair tool. Reinstall the HP package so its files and configuration are restored together.
Do not download or copy the DLL manually
Random DLL download pages are a poor repair source. A downloaded file may have the wrong architecture, version, language, dependencies, or altered contents. It may also leave the original HP installation damaged and allow the startup error to return.
Do not copy hpzjrd01.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The root of the printer software folder
- Another computer’s HP directory
A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit HP programs through WOW64. That does not mean you should choose a system folder based on the operating system’s bitness. The HP installer determines the correct location.
The safe source is the official HP support page for the exact printer model. If you no longer need the printer, uninstalling the old software is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.

Windows Features, runtimes, and related repairs
There is no evidence that enabling a Windows Feature, installing Visual C++ Redistributables, repairing DirectX, or enabling .NET will restore this HP file.

You may check Windows Features if another application specifically reports a missing Windows component:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the feature named in that separate error.
- Change it only when you know the application requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable features simply because hpzjrd01.dll is missing. The file’s known association is with old HP printer software, not a Microsoft runtime.
System Restore for a recent change
If the error appeared immediately after removing or updating HP software, System Restore may reverse that change. It does not affect personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the restore point.
Recommended Free Tools
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the HP software change.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Use this only when you understand what software will be reversed. Afterward, install the correct HP package rather than relying on the restored copy indefinitely. Microsoft provides System Restore guidance if the wizard does not behave as expected.
How to confirm the repair
The repair worked when:
- Windows reaches the desktop without the
hpzjrd01.dllwarning. hphmon06.exeno longer generates an error.- The HP printer appears normally under Printers & scanners.
- A test page prints.
- The HP software opens without requesting another missing file.
- Task Manager no longer shows an obsolete HP startup item.
If the warning disappears after disabling the startup item but printing was never affected, you likely removed an optional monitor rather than repaired the printer driver.
FAQ
Is hpzjrd01.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available evidence identifies it as third-party Hewlett-Packard application software associated with older printer products.
Which program uses it?
Historical reports commonly identify hphmon06.exe, an HP Photosmart printer monitor. The exact relationship may differ between old HP packages, so confirm the executable named in your own error.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does this mean my printer is broken?
Usually not. The missing component may only be a startup monitor. Printing can continue if the core driver is intact.
Should I install a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows?
No. Older 32-bit HP software can run on 64-bit Windows, but the installer must place its files correctly. Do not choose System32 or SysWOW64 manually.
Will Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no evidence that these runtimes provide hpzjrd01.dll. Repair the HP printer package instead.
Should I run SFC or DISM?
Only if other Windows components are also failing. DISM followed by SFC is not a direct method for recreating a missing HP application DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What if I no longer have the printer?
Uninstall the old HP software and disable the clearly identified obsolete startup item. Restoring the DLL would preserve software you no longer need.
What information should I provide to a technician?
Record the exact error text, the executable named in it, the HP printer model, your Windows version, whether printing still works, and when the warning first appeared. This distinguishes a damaged installation from a leftover startup entry.
