htui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows or the affected printer or application instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is named Common halftone Color Adjustment Dialogs. It provides interface functions used for halftone and color-adjustment settings, particularly in Windows printing and printer-driver workflows. The safest first repair is to run Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker tools in an elevated Command Prompt.
What is htui.dll?
htui.dll ships with the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is published by Microsoft Corporation. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file.
Windows and printer software can call this DLL when displaying color, halftone, or device-adjustment controls. Microsoft documents related halftoning and color-adjustment functions in its Windows graphics and printer documentation.

On a normal Windows installation, the file is expected under:
%windir%System32
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit applications use the corresponding 32-bit system components through:
%windir%SysWOW64
This naming is confusing: on 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files. Windows manages this redirection for applications. Do not copy a DLL between these folders manually.
What the error messages mean
The wording depends on which program made the request. Common variants include:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- “The program can’t start because htui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because htui.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading htui.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “htui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “There was a problem starting htui.dll.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
- Missing or not found can mean the file was deleted, quarantined, damaged, or unavailable through the expected system path.
- Could not be loaded can mean the file exists but a dependency or required Windows component is unavailable.
- Not designed to run on Windows or bad image often indicates corruption, an incompatible file, or the wrong architecture.
- If the message appears only in one program, that program may be damaged even when Windows itself is healthy.
Follow the fixes below in order.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: About 10 to 30 minutes, plus a restart.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs or prepares the Windows component source, and SFC uses that source to check and replace protected system files.
1. Open an administrator Command Prompt
- Press the Windows key.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run these commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Do not close the window while either scan is running.
2. Interpret the result
SFC normally reports one of these outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files passed the check. Continue with the application or printer-driver steps if the error remains.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the program or printer again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and repeat
sfc /scannow. If it still cannot repair the files, continue to the later recovery steps. - Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: Restart and try again from an administrator Command Prompt. Safe Mode may be necessary if another process is locking the file.
After SFC completes, restart the computer even if the scan says it found no problem.

If you prefer help identifying what changed during repeated manual scans, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected Windows issues in a scan; its full version performs repairs, but it is optional and does not replace Microsoft servicing when Windows itself is damaged.
3. Run a targeted check
If you suspect the file itself, check the protected file directly:
sfc /verifyfile=%windir%System32htui.dll
If the check identifies a problem, Microsoft also documents /scanfile for repairing a specified protected file. Use the full path:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32htui.dll
On a 32-bit Windows installation, or when troubleshooting a specific 32-bit system path, use the path that actually exists on that installation. Do not guess between System32 and SysWOW64.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 2: Check the path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5 minutes.
Before replacing anything, determine whether the file exists in the expected location and whether it is signed by Microsoft.
Check the file path
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
htui.dll.
Do not treat a copy found in Downloads, Temp, a random game folder, or an unrelated application directory as the Windows system copy.
Check the digital signature
Open PowerShell as administrator or as your normal user and run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32htui.dll"
A genuine Windows copy should have a valid Microsoft signature. The command output should show a valid status and identify Microsoft as the signer. A missing or invalid signature does not automatically prove malware, but it is a reason to stop copying or registering the file and run a security scan.
If the file is in the expected Windows directory and is properly signed, the error may involve corruption elsewhere, a missing dependency, or the program that requested it.
Fix 3: Repair Windows after an update failure
Time needed: 15 minutes to several hours, depending on updates and restart time.
A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected components inconsistent.

Reinstall the current Windows version on Windows 11
Supported Windows 11 systems may show a repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Keep the computer connected to power and follow the prompts.
The wording or availability of this option can vary by Windows edition and device configuration. Microsoft describes the process in its guide to reinstalling the current Windows version.
Fix 4: Repair the printer or printer driver
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes.
Use this branch if the error appears when opening printer properties, changing color settings, printing, adding a printer, or installing a printer driver.
The printer driver may be damaged even though htui.dll itself belongs to Windows. Do not assume the driver should provide a replacement copy of the Windows DLL.

Remove and reinstall the affected printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to detect the printer, or follow the manufacturer’s setup process.
If Windows cannot find the printer, connect it, power it on, and check its network or USB connection before installing the driver again.
Check the driver in Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General tab for an error status.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver, or uninstall the device and restart if the installation is clearly damaged.
Only install a printer driver from Windows Update or the printer manufacturer’s official support channel. Avoid driver packages that also offer unrelated system DLLs.
When manually checking dozens of devices is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation through the full version is optional and does not replace the printer manufacturer’s own package when that is required.
Fix 5: Repair the one application reporting the error
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
If printing works elsewhere and only one legacy program reports htui.dll, the application installation may be the real problem.

Some older programs include a Verify files, Repair installation, or similar command in their launcher. Use that facility where available.
Do not copy htui.dll into the application folder unless the software vendor explicitly documents application-local deployment. A Windows system DLL from another build, language, or architecture can create a new bad-image or entry-point error.
Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine and scan for malware
Time needed: 10 minutes for review; longer for an offline scan.
Security software may quarantine a file that resembles a system component, or malware may have modified a system file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
htui.dll. - Check the exact path and reason for the action.
Restore a quarantined file only if all of these are true:
- The path is the expected Windows system directory.
- The file is confirmed as a Microsoft-signed Windows file.
- A current security scan finds no broader infection.
- The quarantine entry is clearly a false positive.
If the file was in a download directory, temporary directory, or unfamiliar application folder, do not restore it. Update Microsoft Defender and run a full scan. For persistent or serious concerns, use Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Fix 7: Use System Restore
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes.
Use System Restore when the problem began after a driver installation, cleanup utility, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents. It does not replace a backup and may not be available on every computer.
Fix 8: Repair Windows in place
Time needed: 30 minutes to several hours.
If DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, and System Restore fail, Windows may have broader component-store or system corruption.
Use an official Windows installation source for an in-place repair. Carefully choose the option to keep personal files and applications. Do not begin a reset or clean installation unless you have backed up important files and understand that those choices can remove applications or data.

Why regsvr32 htui.dll usually does not help
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The published export information for htui.dll identifies its halftone and color-adjustment functions, along with normal module behavior, but not the self-registration entry point that regsvr32 expects. Running:
regsvr32 htui.dll
is therefore generally irrelevant and may produce an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.”
Use DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, or application and printer-driver repair instead.
Why downloading htui.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites sites and random file-sharing pages. A downloaded copy may have:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A different language or dependency set
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
- Malware or unwanted modifications
It may also appear to fix one message while leaving the damaged Windows component, printer driver, or application untouched. Windows protected files should be repaired through supported servicing mechanisms, not by copying a matching-looking file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
The safe sources for this problem are Windows Update, Windows repair tools, official Windows installation media, the affected application’s original installer, and the printer manufacturer’s official driver package.
What probably caused the htui.dll error?
The most likely causes are:
| Situation | More likely explanation | Appropriate repair |
|---|---|---|
| The error affects printing across several programs | Windows component or print subsystem damage | DISM, SFC, updates, then printer repair |
| It began after installing a printer | Driver or printing-component conflict | Remove and reinstall the printer driver |
| Only one old program fails | Damaged application or incompatible local dependency | Repair or reinstall that program |
| It began after cleanup software ran | A protected file may have been deleted or altered | DISM and SFC, followed by System Restore if needed |
| Security software reports the file | Quarantine, false positive, or malware | Check the exact path, signature, and scan results |
| The file exists but will not load | Dependency, corruption, or architecture mismatch | SFC/DISM and repair the invoking application |
| The problem began after an update | Incomplete update or component-store inconsistency | Install pending updates or use Windows Update reinstall |
Do not assume every htui.dll error is caused by malware, a printer driver, or Windows Update. The program that displays the message and the time the problem began are important clues.
FAQ
Is htui.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. htui.dll is part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System and is described as Common halftone Color Adjustment Dialogs.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is htui.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified Microsoft redistributable package for htui.dll. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is usually unrelated to this Windows component error.
Where should htui.dll be located?
The normal Windows location is %windir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit system components use %windir%SysWOW64. The correct location depends on Windows architecture and the process requesting the file.
Can I copy htui.dll from another computer?
No. A file from another computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, language, dependency set, or signature. Repair the current Windows installation through DISM and SFC.
What if the message says “The specified module could not be found” even though htui.dll exists?
That wording can refer to a missing dependency rather than the named file itself. Repair Windows, then repair the application or printer driver that requested it.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually not. htui.dll is not documented as a self-registering DLL, so regsvr32 is not the correct repair method.
What if DISM and SFC cannot repair the file?
Restart and run DISM followed by SFC again. If the problem remains, check the CBS log, use a valid Windows installation source, try System Restore, and consider an in-place Windows repair.
When should I suspect the disk?
If the file disappears again after repair, scans repeatedly report corruption, or other files become damaged, check storage health and investigate malware, unstable cleanup software, and recurring update failures before replacing anything else.
