Humankind’s documented cheats are official Dev Mode Tools: a set of in-game windows for sandbox actions, not a traditional console with published text commands. On Steam, add --allowmodtools to the game’s Launch Options, start the game, then press Shift+F1. Dev Mode disables multiplayer while enabled, according to Amplitude’s instructions.
How to enable Humankind Dev Mode on Steam
- In the Steam client, open the game’s Properties.
- In Launch Options, add
--allowmodtools. - Launch Humankind and press Shift+F1 to open the Dev Mode menu.
- To keep a tool window visible, click the “P” in its upper-right corner.
These steps are documented for Steam. They do not establish an equivalent activation method for console editions or other PC storefronts. Amplitude also warns that multiplayer is unavailable with Dev Mode Tools enabled.
What the Dev Mode tools let you change
Amplitude describes Dev Mode as a way for modders to test their work, and also notes uses such as creating scenarios or taking screenshots. Available tools described in the announcement include:
- Starting conditions: choose a starting era and culture in the lobby. Starting in a later era is not balanced as a normal game.
- Units: use the military cheats window to spawn, damage, destroy, or grant experience to units.
- Research and government: unlock technologies and enact civics through ScenarioEditor, CivicsUtils, and TechnologyUtils.
- Settlements: create outposts, cities, and districts, and add or remove infrastructure.
- Map visibility: reveal the whole map or selected areas.
- Empire resources: set an empire’s Money and Influence stock.
- Other controls: switch control to another major empire or spawn Independent People and animals.
The official announcement describes these actions as menu tools; it does not provide typed command strings for resources, units, or other effects. The distinction matters if you are searching for “Humankind console commands”: the documented option is a GUI menu rather than a command prompt. Amplitude’s George Sand Update announcement.

Dev Mode versus community mods
| Approach | What it is for | Access | Risks and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dev Mode Tools | Testing and direct sandbox actions, such as changing units, map visibility, or empire resources. | On Steam, use --allowmodtools in Launch Options and open the menu with Shift+F1. |
Multiplayer is unavailable while the tools are enabled. The documented method is Steam-specific. |
| Community mods | Community-created changes to game content and values. | Amplitude’s modding guidance describes access through mod.io and the game’s Mods interface; Steam purchasers also have access to the Humankind Modding tool. | Amplitude does not pre-vet or moderate community mods and warns that mods or combinations of mods can cause bugs, instability, or incompatibility. |
Amplitude explains that modders can change the values and content used by game systems, but not alter the systems by changing code. Its modding guidelines say the Humankind Modding tool installs a modified Unity environment and can publish mods to mod.io. See the modding overview and modding guidelines. A mod is not the same thing as Dev Mode, and compatibility depends on the mod and game version; check a mod’s current listing and update history rather than assuming it still works.

Amplitude announced the Enheduanna update, version 1.27.4539, for Steam, EGS, and GamePass on November 28, 2024. Its listed changes included a Mod Compatibility Check and new game settings. That dated announcement provides version context, but it does not independently confirm that the Dev Mode activation steps or multiplayer restriction have remained unchanged in every later build or on every platform.
