Press R to rotate a block preview before placing it. Hytale Update 5 specifically confirms the R hotkey for block rotation previews; it does not establish a universal placement rule for every block, mode, or input setup. If nothing happens, check the current binding under Settings → Controls.
Rotate a block preview before placement
- Select the block you want to place and bring up its placement preview.
- Press R to rotate the preview. Hytale’s Update 5 Patch Notes identify R as the hotkey for rotating block rotation previews.
- Place the block once its preview is oriented as desired.
The documented behavior is for the preview. It does not guarantee that every block can be rotated freely, or that all blocks will use the same facing behavior when placed.
If R does not work or the placed block faces the wrong way
Open Settings → Controls and use the Controls page’s search box to find the relevant keybind. Hytale’s Update 6 Patch Notes confirm that Controls includes a search box for keybinds. This is the most reliable way to check the binding in your current setup rather than assuming it is unchanged across modes or input configurations.
Preview rotation and final placement orientation are related but separate: the block’s asset configuration can determine whether rotation is allowed and how placement orientation is handled. Hytale’s Blocks reference documents the AllowRotationKey setting and RotationMode values, including FacingPlayer, BlockNormal, StairFacingPlayer, and Default. These are block-asset settings, not additional player key presses.

Ordinary placement versus Creative Mode editing

Use the R preview control when orienting a single block for placement. Treat Creative Mode selection or paste-tool rotation as a separate editing workflow; check the in-game Controls page for its current bindings.
