Adding a GTA 5 mod does not, by itself, prove you were scammed or infected. The important clues are where the file came from, what you were asked to do, and what happened after you downloaded or ran it. There are also two separate concerns: protecting your device and account, and following Rockstar’s rules for GTA Online.
First, check what the download asked you to do
Use these questions to gauge what needs attention. They are warning signs to investigate, not proof that a scam occurred.

- Did you pay? Check what the seller promised, whether the payment went through an expected channel, and whether you received the files or service described. A payment dispute is separate from whether a file is malicious.
- Did you enter your Rockstar login? Be cautious if a mod page or download asked you to sign in through an unfamiliar page, or if you received an unexpected message claiming to be from Rockstar. Rockstar warns that emails can impersonate the company. Do not follow links from a suspicious download or message.
- Did you run a separate installer or grant unusual permissions? A mod download that asks you to run an executable, disable protections, or provide permissions unrelated to the mod deserves extra scrutiny. The fact that a file is called a mod installer does not establish that it is safe.
- Did anything change afterward? Look for unfamiliar sign-ins or account changes, unexpected security alerts, or unusual device behavior. Their absence does not prove a file is safe, but any such change is a reason to act promptly.
What to do if you suspect a download or account was compromised
- Stop using the suspicious file. Do not run it again or use links bundled with it. If it is still on your device, avoid opening it while you investigate.
- Update and run your security software. Rockstar advises users to “Continuously update any antivirus or anti-malware software you have.” Use your security software to check the device, but do not treat a clean scan as proof that a file or device is safe.
- Secure your Rockstar account through official channels. If you entered your credentials on an unfamiliar page or see account activity you do not recognize, go directly to Rockstar’s official site or support rather than using a link from the download. - Do not disable antivirus as a routine fix. Rockstar notes that some antivirus products can interfere with BattlEye or game operation. If you encounter a launch problem, consult Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ for troubleshooting rather than leaving protection off without understanding the trade-off.
Malicious GTA 5 mods have been reported, but that does not diagnose this download
A Steam Community announcement dated May 19, 2015 reproduced a warning that some third-party GTA V PC mods were reportedly packaged with malware, including keyloggers that could steal Social Club credentials and potentially other information. That establishes a historical warning, not how common malware is now and not whether any particular current mod is malicious. The title alone cannot settle either question.
Story Mode mods and GTA Online have different rules
PC Story Mode
Rockstar has separate policies and guidelines for PC Single-Player or Story Mode mods. Use that page to check current guidance for the kind of change you are making; it is not a blanket assurance that every mod, download source, or installer is approved or safe.

GTA Online
Rockstar says account suspensions can follow violations including modding online games, exploiting or abusing online mechanics, manipulating protected game data or code, and interfering with other players. Its online-mods and exploits guidance concerns account enforcement; it is distinct from whether a file downloaded for Story Mode is malicious.
Rockstar describes BattlEye’s purpose this way: “BattlEye is used to detect and prohibit attempts to use cheating software accessing GTA Online servers, attempts to manipulate game protected code, and the sabotage of other players’ experience.” That is a description of the system’s stated purpose, not a guarantee that it will detect every suspicious file. Avoid taking altered files into GTA Online.

Check which PC edition the mod is for
Rockstar announced in February 2025 that GTAV Enhanced for PC would arrive on March 4 as a free upgrade for current PC owners, while the previous PC version was renamed GTAV Legacy and would continue to be supported. Rockstar’s current PC store listing includes both editions. A mod’s compatibility can depend on the edition and build, so check those details with the mod’s own documentation when available. The title does not identify which edition or build was used.
Rockstar says Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection, but activation, updates, cloud syncing, or online features may require connectivity in some circumstances. Disconnecting is therefore not a guaranteed way to avoid network access or make an unsafe file safe. See Rockstar’s instructions for launching GTA V on PC in offline mode.
