Yes, the AYANEO Phone is real. It is officially called AYANEO Pocket PLAY, an Android smartphone with a side-sliding game controller built into its chassis. But it is not currently available for normal purchase, and AYANEO has not announced a firm price, retail launch date, shipping window, or carrier support.
As of August 18, 2026, “coming soon” means that Pocket PLAY remains an active, officially announced project—not that it is necessarily close to shipping.
What is the AYANEO Pocket PLAY?
Pocket PLAY is AYANEO’s first smartphone, designed to combine an everyday phone with a dedicated handheld gaming controller. Instead of attaching a separate gamepad, you slide the display sideways to reveal physical gaming controls inside the device.

AYANEO has shown a D-pad, ABXY buttons, additional game controls, and dual intelligent touchpads. The touchpads are intended to support configurable virtual joysticks, touch input, or mapped controls. When closed, the device is meant to look more like a conventional smartphone; when open, it becomes a gaming handheld.

That approach is unusual because it makes the controller part of the phone rather than an accessory. It could mean fewer Bluetooth pairing problems, no separate controller battery, and no clamp blocking the display. Physical buttons should also be more useful than touchscreen controls for platformers, action games, emulation, and cloud gaming.
However, the design also creates potential compromises. A sliding mechanism introduces moving parts, and the controller may make the phone thicker or heavier than a conventional handset. It may also compete for internal space with the battery, cameras, cooling system, speakers, and cellular hardware. Those are design-based trade-offs, not confirmed test results.
AYANEO has published renders and specifications, but there has not yet been independent testing of the final hardware.

How powerful will it be?
The confirmed headline component is MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300. AYANEO says it selected the platform for high-performance mobile gaming and sustained high-frame-rate output.

That establishes the processor, not the finished product’s real-world performance. No independent benchmark or long-session test in the available material confirms its thermals, battery life, throttling behavior, emulator compatibility, or sustained frame rates.
It would therefore be premature to promise that Pocket PLAY will handle every GameCube, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Switch, or Windows game. Actual results will depend on cooling, memory configuration, power limits, software optimization, emulator support, and the individual game.
The safest description is that Pocket PLAY appears to be built around a powerful mobile platform, while its final gaming performance remains unverified.
Why “coming soon” is doing a lot of work
AYANEO’s timeline explains why the phone is both real and difficult to call imminent:
- December 11, 2025: AYANEO introduced Pocket PLAY as its first smartphone and promoted registration for a possible Kickstarter early-bird offer through its initial announcement.
- January 13, 2026: The planned crowdfunding launch was suspended. AYANEO said it needed to address existing fulfillment and service issues before moving forward, as described in its 2026 Service Improvement Plan.
- January 30, 2026: AYANEO disclosed the Dimensity 9300 platform in a dedicated Pocket PLAY configuration announcement.
- February 8, 2026: The company detailed the side-slider, OLED display, physical controls, touchpads, and Android software in its design reveal.
- May 21, 2026: AYANEO said development was progressing in another product announcement.
- July 3, 2026: AYANEO said Pocket PLAY was progressing toward completion, but still did not provide a price or launch date in its Product Sharing Session.
The proposed late-January or early-February crowdfunding relaunch window passed without a confirmed public campaign launch in the official material reviewed. The project has not been declared canceled, but “coming soon” should not be read as a firm release schedule.

Can you buy or preorder the AYANEO Phone?
There is no verified normal retail purchase listing with a public price, and no confirmed shipping schedule. AYANEO’s official Pocket PLAY product page provides product information but does not establish that units are in stock or ready to ship.

Do not treat any of the following as confirmed availability:
- A product page containing renders and specifications.
- An email-registration form.
- A promise of a possible early-bird offer.
- An unofficial marketplace listing.
- A seller claiming to accept deposits before AYANEO publishes official terms.
For now, the correct status is officially announced, not reliably purchasable.
What AYANEO still needs to explain
The gaming concept is comparatively clear. The phone itself is not. Important unanswered questions include:
Phone functionality
- Cellular modem and supported frequency bands.
- 5G support.
- Physical SIM, eSIM, or both.
- Carrier compatibility, especially for buyers in the United States.
- VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling, emergency-call compatibility, and regional certifications.
Hardware
- RAM and storage configurations.
- Battery capacity and charging speed.
- Camera specifications.
- Speaker layout and headphone support.
- USB-C capabilities and microSD support.
- Exact dimensions and weight.
- Cooling design and power limits.
- Durability, repairability, and replacement parts for the sliding mechanism.
Software
- Android version at launch.
- Google Play availability and certification.
- Software-update policy.
- Bootloader policy.
- DRM, banking-app, and streaming-service compatibility.
- How controller mapping works outside supported games.
Commercial details
- Price and any early-bird pricing.
- Actual crowdfunding platform and campaign date.
- Retail launch date.
- Shipping regions.
- Warranty and repair process.
- Whether the phone will be sold unlocked.
The appeal—and the risks
The appeal is straightforward: one device could handle phone calls, Android games, emulation, and cloud gaming without requiring a separate controller. The side-slider also has a distinctive retro-gaming feel, while keeping the controls hidden when they are not needed.

The risks are equally straightforward. This is a first-generation phone from a company better known for gaming handhelds, and the most important everyday-phone details remain undisclosed. Buyers do not yet know whether it will work on their network, last through a full day, receive long-term software support, take acceptable photos, or withstand years of sliding.
AYANEO’s service and fulfillment concerns are also relevant context for anyone considering crowdfunding. The campaign suspension does not prove that Pocket PLAY will fail, but it is a reason to wait for clear delivery, warranty, and support terms before committing money.
Should you wait for it?
Wait if the integrated sliding controller is the feature you specifically want and you are comfortable with a first-generation product whose price, network support, and release date are unknown.
Wait for independent testing if you need dependable daily-phone performance, strong battery life, good cameras, verified carrier compatibility, durable hardware, or a clear software-support commitment.
Buy something else if you need a gaming device now. Options include an existing Android gaming handheld, a conventional Android gaming phone, or a USB-C or Bluetooth controller for your current phone. AYANEO’s Android handheld range includes products that are available separately, but they are not replacements for a cellular smartphone.

Pocket PLAY’s sliding controller and Dimensity 9300 platform make it one of the more unusual gaming-phone concepts in development, but its price, cellular support, launch date, shipping schedule, and long-term software and hardware support remain unknown.
