SteamOS can run on the ASUS ROG Ally X, but getting it to boot is not the same as getting a Steam Deck-level experience. The Ally X was designed around Windows and ASUS software, so controls, power settings, sleep, launchers, and individual games may not behave as expected. Before wiping anything, identify which operating system you installed and whether your problem is a fixable setup issue or a feature you need Windows for.
If you rely on Xbox PC Game Pass, Windows-only games, or dependable ASUS utilities, restoring Windows—or keeping it in a carefully planned dual-boot setup—is often the practical answer. If your library is mostly Steam and the handheld basics work, try a short troubleshooting pass first.
First, check what you installed
“SteamOS on the Ally X” can mean several different things: Valve’s SteamOS, Bazzite, ChimeraOS, a Steam Deck recovery image adapted for the device, or another community build. The advice for one is not automatically valid for another. Bazzite, for example, is a SteamOS-style Linux distribution, not Valve’s SteamOS.
In the system’s About screen or desktop information panel, record the distribution name, build or update channel, and kernel version. Also note the Ally X BIOS version and whether Windows is still installed on the internal SSD. If the problem began after an update, write down which update; fixes and regressions can be build-specific.

Valve’s SteamOS materials list the Ally X among devices that can use SteamOS recovery or installation tools, while cautioning that Steam Support may have limited ability to troubleshoot hardware-specific problems on devices outside its officially supported hardware. Valve also describes improved compatibility with other AMD handheld PCs in SteamOS 3.8. Neither point means every Ally X feature has Steam Deck-level integration. Check Valve’s current SteamOS support information for the latest qualifications.
The Ally X is a Windows handheld with ASUS-specific software for device settings, updates, and control profiles. Its specifications include an 80Wh battery, a 1920×1080 120Hz display, 24GB memory configurations, and an M.2 2280 SSD. ASUS’s published performance tests use Windows 11 and Armoury Crate, so they are not SteamOS benchmarks. See ASUS’s Ally X specifications and test conditions.
Match the complaint to the likely cause

SteamOS uses Proton to run many Windows games, and Valve describes broad Steam library compatibility, but that is not a guarantee for every game, launcher, anti-cheat system, or update. Check the exact titles you play rather than assuming every non-Steam game fails—or that every Steam game works. Valve’s SteamOS overview explains the compatibility-layer approach.

The interface, firmware behavior, plugged-in state, and tool used can differ. Battery-life claims need the same caution: the result depends on the game, brightness, refresh rate, power profile, and software build.
Try these checks before reinstalling
- Install available system updates and restart fully. A shutdown and fresh boot is a better first test than relying only on suspend and resume.
- Test the controls in several places. Check Steam Gaming Mode, desktop mode, a game, and Steam’s controller test or configuration screen. If controls work in games but not on the desktop, look for a mode-mapping issue before assuming the hardware is broken.
- Check Steam Input and the affected game’s settings. Try an appropriate controller layout. If only one game is affected, the problem may be its configuration rather than the whole system.
- For a game-specific launch failure, test another Proton version if the system offers that option. Also check whether the game depends on a launcher, DRM, or anti-cheat that is incompatible with your setup. Do not assume a different Proton version will fix every case.
- Recheck display and power settings. Confirm resolution, refresh rate, frame limits, and available power controls. If the device is being identified as a different handheld, consult the documentation for your exact distribution and release.
- If a failure started after an update, use only the supported rollback or previous-image option for that distribution, if available. Community reports have described Ally X controller or quick-access problems that later appeared to change with updates. These are time-sensitive user reports, not proof of a universal current bug. Back up saves, screenshots, downloads, emulator files, and personal documents before changing partitions or reimaging. Avoid unverified driver packages and one-off terminal commands presented as universal fixes: a workaround for one build can stop working or cause trouble after an update.

Choose the operating system for the games and features you actually use

Bazzite may offer handheld-focused tools or a smoother fit for some configurations, but “switch to Bazzite” is not a guaranteed fix for controls, power, sleep, or game compatibility. It is still Linux, and Windows-dependent games and services remain a consideration. A dual-boot guide for Bazzite cites 64GB as a minimum installation allocation; treat that as a floor, not comfortable room for an operating system, updates, and games. Dual-booting can preserve Windows access, but it is not effortless or risk-free. It adds partition and EFI boot management, can complicate BitLocker recovery, uses SSD capacity, and leaves you maintaining two operating systems. Keep a BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled, and do not resize or replace partitions until important data is backed up. If you need a reliable handheld today and do not have time to troubleshoot, restoring Windows is the lower-risk choice.
How to restore Windows on the Ally X
Important: ASUS Cloud Recovery restores the operating-system storage to its original state and erases that drive’s contents, including existing partitions. Back up first. If Windows remains installed, back up before changing its partitions. Keep the Ally X connected to AC power, have Wi-Fi available, and keep a USB-C hub or dongle and external keyboard handy in case recovery requires keyboard input.
Option 1: ASUS Cloud Recovery from UEFI BIOS
- Shut the Ally X down completely.
- Turn it on and enter BIOS/UEFI by holding or repeatedly pressing Volume Down during startup. ASUS documents the BIOS entry method for ROG Ally devices.
- In BIOS, open Advanced, then choose ASUS Cloud Recovery.
- Accept the policy and connect to Wi-Fi. Keep the handheld plugged into power.
- Back up files if the recovery environment offers that option. Proceed with the reset only once you have confirmed your backup and understand that the OS drive will be erased.
- Let recovery finish without forcing a shutdown. ASUS says it may take roughly one to three hours, depending on network and configuration; multiple restarts or a temporarily black screen can occur. See ASUS Cloud Recovery’s requirements and warnings.
If Cloud Recovery cannot connect, ASUS notes that some Wi-Fi 6/6E-to-Wi-Fi 7 router combinations may fail in the recovery environment. Try another access point or a mobile hotspot; a compatible ASUS Ethernet adapter may be another option.
Option 2: MyASUS in WinRE, if Windows recovery is still available
This route depends on a working Windows Recovery Environment and may not be available after replacing the SSD. On the Ally, an external keyboard and USB-C dongle may be needed:

- Connect the dongle and keyboard, then enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Choose Troubleshoot, then MyASUS in WinRE, then Cloud Recovery.
- Connect to the network, back up files if required, and confirm the reset only after reviewing the data-erasure warning.
ASUS explains MyASUS in WinRE and its requirements. If the SSD was replaced, ASUS directs users to UEFI Cloud Recovery rather than relying on recovery software that may have been on the original drive.

Option 3: Install Windows from a USB drive
If ASUS recovery is unavailable, create Windows 11 installation media on another computer, connect it to the Ally X, boot from USB, and follow Windows Setup. Select the correct Windows edition and target disk carefully; setup can delete files and partitions. After installation, download the Ally X drivers and utilities from ASUS’s Windows installation instructions and support resources. Activation outcomes depend on the device and installation; do not assume you need to buy another license. Check Windows activation after setup.
When regret is the right signal
If you mainly play Steam games and the controller, power controls, suspend/resume, and required titles are dependable, it may be worth keeping the setup and accepting that it is not identical to a Steam Deck. If a required game depends on Windows, Game Pass matters, or essential controls and sleep remain unreliable after updates and basic checks, the limitation may be the OS-and-device fit rather than a setting you have overlooked.
SteamOS is most rewarding here when you are willing to tune a PC handheld. The Ally X is a Windows-first device, and restoring its ASUS Windows image is a reasonable choice—not a failure—if you wanted a console-like appliance rather than an ongoing compatibility project.
