ialmdnt5.dll is an old Intel graphics-driver component, not a modern Windows runtime. Its description is “Controller Hub for Intel Graphics Driver,” and it belongs to Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows NT(R), developed by Intel Corporation.
The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Intel graphics driver that originally supplied it. Do not download ialmdnt5.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32. That can introduce malware, install the wrong architecture, or leave the damaged driver installation unresolved.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct graphics driver
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus a restart
This is the most likely solution when the error appeared after a driver update, rollback, cleanup utility, system restore, or failed installation.
Identify the graphics adapter
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the exact Intel graphics controller name.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version.
If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, Windows is not currently using the expected Intel graphics driver. That strongly supports reinstalling the graphics package.

Install the computer manufacturer’s driver first
For a laptop or prebuilt desktop, use the support page for the computer’s exact model. Search the manufacturer’s official support site for the model and download its graphics driver for the installed Windows version.
Then:
- Close running applications.
- Run the downloaded driver installer.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Try opening the application that reported
ialmdnt5.dll.
The manufacturer’s package is preferable because OEMs can customize Intel graphics drivers for a particular chipset, display panel, power system, or firmware configuration. A generic Intel package may not support those customizations.
If the computer originally ran Windows XP or Vista and is now being repaired on Windows 10 or 11, a current driver may not contain this old module. In that situation, the correct repair may be restoring the old application or hardware environment rather than forcing an obsolete DLL into a modern Windows installation.
Manually hunting through old driver packages and matching them to the graphics controller can be tedious, especially when several Intel packages appear compatible. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or mismatched drivers; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation and repair are handled by the full version. It is optional, and the computer manufacturer’s driver remains the preferred source.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the installer fails, use Device Manager
- Download the correct driver package from the computer manufacturer.
- If it is a ZIP file, right-click it and choose Extract All.
- Press Windows + X and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select the extracted driver folder.
- Enable Include subfolders.
- Select Next.
- Restart the computer when installation finishes.
If the package includes a folder named Graphics, select the folder that contains the driver files rather than an unrelated documentation folder.
After restarting, return to Device Manager > Display adapters. The adapter should show its Intel name rather than Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and the application should no longer report the missing file.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the display adapter
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Use this step when Device Manager shows a warning icon, the driver update repeatedly fails, or the error began after an incomplete driver replacement.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel graphics adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If shown, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
The screen may temporarily use a basic display driver after the restart. That is expected. Install the correct OEM graphics package immediately afterward using the procedure above.
If Windows reinstalls the same broken driver automatically, disconnect from the internet temporarily, uninstall the adapter again, restart, install the downloaded OEM package, and reconnect afterward. Do not remove chipset, monitor, or unrelated devices unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically require it.
Check for a rollback option
If the problem started immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the Intel adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Choose a reason and complete the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
Rollback is unavailable when Windows has no previous driver stored. In that case, install the last known-good package from the computer manufacturer.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can remove a driver file if it is damaged, modified, or incorrectly detected. Do not restore it automatically simply because an application says it is missing.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection related to the Intel graphics driver.
- Check the original file path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The original path belongs to the expected Intel driver installation.
- The driver came from the computer manufacturer or an official Intel package.
- The file has a valid Intel signature when its properties can be checked.
- A current security scan does not identify the driver package as malicious.
If you restore a quarantined file and Defender detects it again, do not repeatedly override the warning. Remove the package, scan the computer, and obtain a fresh driver from the OEM.
If the file is unsigned, appears in a temporary download folder, or exists outside a legitimate driver directory, treat it as suspicious. Run a full scan and investigate the source instead of restoring it.
Fix 4: Repair Windows component corruption
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus a restart
Windows repair commands are useful when other protected system components are also missing or damaged. They may not restore ialmdnt5.dll because this file belongs to a third-party Intel driver package rather than a universal Windows component.

- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, after which SFC can check and repair protected system files.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and test the affected application. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the Intel driver is more likely to be the problem. If it cannot repair some files, repeat the driver installation steps rather than copying a loose DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed rarely resolves a third-party graphics-driver mismatch. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems; its free scan shows detected issues, while automated repair is provided by the full version. It is not required, and reinstalling the correct Intel driver remains the direct fix for this file.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore is appropriate when the error began after a driver installation, system cleanup, software removal, or Windows configuration change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and drivers that will be affected.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can change drivers, applications, and system settings. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the driver-reinstallation method.
Fix 6: Repair the application that requests the file
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
The error may appear while starting an old game or application even when Windows itself is working normally. That does not prove the application includes ialmdnt5.dll. The program may be calling an old Intel graphics component, or it may contain a stale reference left after an upgrade.

Those components should be installed only when the application provides a separate, specific error identifying them.
Fix 7: Check the file’s location and signature
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
A historical copy of ialmdnt5.dll may appear under a Windows system directory or inside an Intel driver package. Location alone does not prove that a copy is legitimate.
If the file exists:
- Right-click it.
- Select Properties.
- Open Details.
- Check the description and company fields.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A file claiming to be ialmdnt5.dll but located in a random downloads folder, a user profile’s temporary directory, or an unrelated application folder deserves additional scanning. A recent timestamp is not proof of malware by itself, but it is worth investigating because this is an obsolete driver component.
Do not replace a 32-bit file with a 64-bit file, or assume that a similarly named Intel DLL is interchangeable. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system files while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. Copying the same DLL into both locations is not a repair.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why regsvr32 usually does not help
Time needed: Not applicable
Do not run regsvr32 merely because Windows reports a DLL error. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components.
A graphics-driver module is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL. Registering it can produce another error without repairing the driver, and it does not install missing dependencies.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor’s documentation specifically identifies the file as a self-registering component and provides the correct command. For ialmdnt5.dll, reinstalling the graphics driver is the appropriate route.
Why Windows Features are not the right fix
Time needed: Not applicable
Windows Features can enable components such as .NET Framework or legacy compatibility features, but they do not normally restore an Intel graphics-driver module. Do not enable random Windows Features in response to this filename.

If an old application needs a separate Windows compatibility component, its own documentation should identify that component. The ialmdnt5.dll error itself points toward the graphics-driver installation.
Causes of the error
| Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Intel graphics driver was deleted or damaged | Install the OEM graphics driver |
| A driver update or rollback was incomplete | Roll back or cleanly reinstall the adapter driver |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Review Protection history and verify provenance |

| Malware or disk damage affected the file | Scan the system and check storage health |
| A modern PC contains an obsolete leftover reference | Remove the old software or driver that requests it |
Is ialmdnt5.dll legitimate or malware?
The filename is associated with a legitimate, historical Intel graphics-driver module. That does not make every copy safe. Legitimacy depends on its location, digital signature, source, and relationship to the installed graphics hardware.
A genuine copy should come from the computer manufacturer’s driver package or an official Intel legacy package. A loose copy downloaded from an unknown site is not trustworthy simply because its filename matches.
Which Windows versions used it?
Historical records associate the file with Intel graphics drivers from the Windows XP and Vista era. Public metadata also reports different historical builds, and third-party records disagree about architecture and other file details. Do not use an online version number or claimed file size as a universal replacement rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows 10 and Windows 11 do not normally need this old module on modern hardware. If it appears on a current computer, an old program, migrated driver, compatibility layer, or leftover startup entry may be requesting it.
Can I download the DLL separately?
No. A standalone DLL download is risky because it may contain malware, belong to a different driver build, use the wrong architecture, or omit related files and dependencies. It also does not repair the driver registration, hardware matching, or installation state.
Use the computer manufacturer’s official driver package first. Use an Intel legacy package only when it matches the graphics controller and operating system.
What if the computer cannot boot?
Enter Windows Recovery Environment and try System Restore. If that is unavailable, use the manufacturer’s recovery or driver media. Recovery choices differ in whether they preserve applications, settings, and personal files, so read each option carefully before confirming it.
Final verification checklist
After repairing the system:
- Device Manager > Display adapters shows the expected Intel adapter.
- The adapter has no warning icon.
- The driver provider and version match the installed package.
- The affected application starts without the
ialmdnt5.dllmessage. - Windows Security shows no unresolved detection for the driver.
- The file, if present, has a credible location and valid provenance.
- You did not copy a loose DLL into
System32orSysWOW64. - You did not use
regsvr32without a documented registration requirement.
If the error remains after the correct driver is installed, the remaining issue is likely a missing dependency, an obsolete application reference, malware, or hardware and storage damage rather than the absence of this one DLL alone.
