Icarus began with a distinctive answer to a familiar survival-game problem: instead of asking every player to live in one sprawling sandbox, it built play around focused missions. The game has since expanded to include persistent Open World play and creative Outposts, so today it offers several ways to structure a session rather than one universal reset-based format.
What “session-based” means in Icarus
RocketWerkz described the original design goal in its Week Forty Seven update announcement: “We originally launched Icarus with a unique Mission-based approach to survival games, which aimed to breakup sprawling sandbox experiences into more focused sessions.” The idea was to give survival a bounded objective and a more focused play structure instead of requiring players to make one continuous sandbox their only way to play.

That description applies to the game’s original mission-based approach, not to every mode available now. RocketWerkz later introduced Open World play, and the current Steam listing presents Icarus as offering mission-based play, persistent Open World play, and creative Outposts. The Week Fifty Three update also marked the game’s first year and discussed Open World: Icarus Week Fifty Three Update.
How the three modes differ
| Mode | Structure | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Missions | Mission-based play built around a bounded objective. | Players who want a more focused survival session. |
| Open World | Persistent play in an open world. | Players who want longer-term survival play rather than a mission-centered structure. |
| Outposts | Creative play. | Players looking for a creative mode rather than the mission or persistent-world formats. |
These distinctions follow the modes as described on the official Steam listing. The listing does not establish the detailed timer, failure, or progression rules for every mission, so those mechanics should not be inferred from the broad mode descriptions.

What survival looks like in Icarus
The setting is a dangerous terraformed planet. Steam describes the core activities as exploring, harvesting, crafting, and hunting, placing the survival loop in a hostile environment rather than a safe building sandbox. The mode choice determines whether players approach that loop through a bounded mission, persistent Open World play, or a creative Outpost.
Can you play solo or with friends?
Icarus is presented as a PvE game for solo play or co-op with up to eight players, according to the Steam product listing. The modes provide different session structures; the store listing does not specify that every mode has identical group rules or progression behavior.
