“ The file Idprov32.dll is missing.”
“idprov32.dll not found” and “This application failed to start because Idprov32.dll was not found” usually point to a damaged or incomplete legacy database application, not a broken Windows installation.
Which fix applies to you
Choose the situation that matches what you see:
- An old Delphi, Borland, Paradox, dBASE, or database program will not start: repair or reinstall that application first.
- You copied the program folder from another computer: perform a proper installation. BDE applications can require configuration and registry entries, not just executable files and DLLs.
- The problem started after antivirus detection: check Protection history before restoring anything.
- The program starts but reports an IDAPI or provider error: repair the complete Borland Database Engine deployment, including its configuration and related files.
- Only Windows components are failing elsewhere: run DISM and SFC, but do not expect them to recreate
idprov32.dll. - You were told to copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64: do not do that unless the original application vendor specifically instructs it.
- You tried
regsvr32: that command usually does not apply toidprov32.dll.
What idprov32.dll actually is
idprov32.dll is a legacy 32-bit component associated with the Borland Database Engine, commonly called BDE. Its role is connected with BDE provider and MIDAS functionality used by older Delphi and Borland-built applications.
That means the file is an application dependency. It is not a standard Windows DLL, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, Windows Update component, or device driver.
Programs that may need it include:
- Older Delphi or C++Builder applications
- Software using the Borland Database Engine
- Paradox or dBASE applications
- Programs using BDE SQL drivers
- Older multi-tier applications using MIDAS or client-dataset providers
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program. A historical BDE installation commonly used:

That is only a historical default. The application may instead keep BDE files in its own installation directory.
Related files can include idapi32.dll, dbclient.dll, stdvcl32.dll, idpdx32.dll, and idsql32.dll. If several of these are missing, replacing only idprov32.dll will not repair the installation.
Fix 1: Repair the application that installed the file
This is the safest and most likely solution.
- Note the name of the program shown in the error dialog.
- Open Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the affected application.
- Right-click it and choose Repair, if available.
- If there is no Repair option, choose Change and follow the installer.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the application again from its normal shortcut.
If the repair succeeds, the application should launch without the missing-file message. It may also restore the correct BDE directory, registry configuration, and related provider files.
If the program is not listed, use its original installer. For an old game or packaged application, open its launcher and look for Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files.

- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if shown.
- Reopen the application.
Do not copy the executable and DLLs manually from another computer. BDE applications can depend on installation paths, registry settings, aliases, and a particular release of the engine.
Fix 2: Reinstall the complete legacy application
Use this when repair fails, the application was partly removed, or the program was copied from another computer.
- Back up the application’s documents and database files.
- Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run the original installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the application’s normal installation location unless its documentation specifies another path.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Launch the program and test the operation that previously failed.
If the application uses a separately supplied BDE installer, install that package from the original vendor or product media. Do not obtain an isolated idprov32.dll from a generic DLL archive.
A reinstall is particularly important when the application was moved to a new PC. BDE configuration may be stored outside the application folder, so copying files does not reproduce a working deployment.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
A missing file may have been deleted by antivirus software, but a quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file is safe.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event matching the application, installer, or
idprov32.dll. - Check the detected file path and threat information.
- If the file came from the original application installer, scan that installer and verify its source before taking action.
- Restore or allow the file only when you are confident it is legitimate.
- Run the application’s repair option afterward so the full, matching BDE deployment is restored.
If the file came from a temporary folder, email attachment, unofficial modification, crack, or key generator, do not restore it. Remove the suspicious source and reinstall the legitimate application instead.
After restoring a quarantined file, Microsoft Defender may scan it again. If it is quarantined immediately, stop forcing the restore and investigate the installer’s provenance.

Fix 4: Repair BDE configuration instead of copying DLLs
An error such as “Cannot load IDAPI service library” can indicate that the BDE files exist but the application is looking in the wrong place.
Check the following without changing files:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Look for a BDE directory or files such as
idapi32.dllandidprov32.dll. - Check the application documentation for its configured BDE path.
- If the program includes BDE Administrator, open it from the application’s tools or Borland common-files directory.
- Compare the configured paths and database aliases with the vendor’s installation instructions.
- Save changes only when you know the correct vendor configuration.
- Restart the application.
Shared BDE installations require care. Incorrect changes can break other older programs that use the same engine. If several applications stopped working at once, use the certified installer or contact the software vendor rather than replacing shared files manually.
Fix 5: Do not place the file in System32 or SysWOW64
idprov32.dll is a 32-bit application component. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit program normally loads its dependencies from its own installation directory or from the application’s configured BDE location.
Do not copy it into both of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those directories are not interchangeable repair locations. Copying the wrong build can produce a new error, including an entry-point error, an access violation, or an application crash. It can also leave Windows loading a DLL unrelated to the program that needs it.

The correct file must come from the same application or matching BDE deployment. No verified current standalone official download for idprov32.dll is established here, and exact version, file size, hash, and build details should not be guessed.
Fix 6: Understand why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for installing every DLL.
Running this command against the file:
regsvr32 idprov32.dll
will usually fail if the DLL is not a self-registering COM server. A message saying that DllRegisterServer is missing generally means the command does not apply. It does not prove that Windows itself is damaged.
Some older multi-tier Delphi deployments may require registration of separate components such as dbclient.dll or stdvcl32.dll. That requirement does not establish that idprov32.dll should be registered.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader damage
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a third-party BDE DLL, so use them when you also have Windows crashes, damaged system tools, failed updates, or other operating-system symptoms.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try the affected application again.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that corruption was repaired or that no integrity violations were found. If idprov32.dll is still missing, return to the application repair or reinstall steps.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while the real problem remains the legacy application. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the BDE application remains the definitive fix when that program owns the DLL.

The 32 naming and BDE history identify this as a 32-bit legacy dependency. A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs its 32-bit application files and configuration.

Check that:
- You installed the application rather than copying it.
- The file is in the application or BDE directory expected by that program.
- Related BDE files were restored together.
- You did not substitute a file from another application.
- You are using the same release of the application and BDE components.
Do not look for an assumed idprov64.dll. No verified 64-bit counterpart with that name is established.
Fix 9: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A missing idprov32.dll is not normally a graphics, audio, chipset, or device-driver problem. Do not install a driver package simply because the error appeared after a Windows update.
If Device Manager shows a separate device error:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device with a warning icon.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a clean reinstall, right-click the device, choose Uninstall device, restart, and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer’s official support page.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; the full version performs the driver installation. This is separate from restoring the BDE application, which remains the correct repair for idprov32.dll.
When System Restore is appropriate
If the application worked immediately before a failed update, installation, or system change, System Restore may help.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Back up important work, then complete the restore.
- Test the application afterward.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings and normally does not remove personal files. It is not a replacement for reinstalling a damaged application.
Prevention and escalation
Keep the original installer and application documentation with any database files. Avoid moving old BDE applications by copying folders, and do not mix DLLs from different releases.
If none of the fixes work, record:
- The complete error text
- The failing executable name
- The application version
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 version
- The application installation path
- The BDE path, if shown
- Whether
idprov32.dllexists and where - Any antivirus quarantine event
- Whether other BDE applications also fail
That information lets the original vendor or a qualified administrator identify a missing dependency, incorrect BDE configuration, or incompatible build.
FAQ
Is idprov32.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No. It is associated with an older 32-bit Borland Database Engine deployment. It should not be treated like a protected Microsoft system DLL.
Which program installed idprov32.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact product. Start with the application named in the error and inspect its installer, repair entry, and installation folder.
Should I download idprov32.dll from a DLL website?
No. An arbitrary download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or an incompatible build. It may also leave BDE configuration and related dependencies missing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShould I register idprov32.dll?
Usually no. regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM DLLs, not every application library. Use the original application installer.
Why does the program fail after I copy it to another PC?
Older BDE software may require registry settings, database aliases, installation paths, and shared engine files. Copying the program folder does not necessarily recreate those settings.
Will SFC restore idprov32.dll?
Normally no. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. Repair or reinstall the application that supplied the BDE file.
