Marvel Rivals crashing or stuttering on PC is best fixed by diagnosis, not random tweaks. Start with updates, file verification, GPU selection, and the shader-compilation distinction; then use the GPU, BIOS, security-software, and hardware branches that match the actual symptom.

Start here: the safest order for fixing Marvel Rivals on PC

If Marvel Rivals crashes, freezes, stutters, or closes with a GPU or “Out of Video Memory” message, do not begin by deleting random game folders or changing BIOS settings. Use this order:

For broader Windows instability behind recurring crashes or freezes, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional way to check common system issues.

  1. Check your PC against the published requirements and confirm you have enough free storage.
  2. Restart Windows, update Windows and your graphics driver, then verify the game files.
  3. Make Windows use the discrete, high-performance GPU.
  4. Identify whether the hitch is one-time shader compilation or recurring stutter.
  5. Test Marvel Rivals’ shader-compilation and PC performance-optimization options.
  6. If the problem began after an update, rebuild the GPU shader cache where the official procedure applies.
  7. Use GPU Debug Mode and the Client Diagnostic Tool for recurring GPU crashes.
  8. Follow the specific BIOS, security-software, or hardware branch that matches your error.

The latest official game-update entry in the supplied research is Version 20260807, released for Season 9.5 on August 7, 2026 at 09:00 UTC. Update the game before troubleshooting. That patch reduced the PC installation footprint by about 30% through texture-resource compression, but it did not announce a general PC crash or stutter fix. A new game or driver version can also trigger fresh shader compilation, so a brief first-run hitch after updating is not automatically a sign that the installation is broken.

First, match the symptom to the right branch

What happens Start with
Nothing happens, the game closes at launch, or files appear missing Update drivers, verify files, check antivirus/firewall interference, and confirm the game is using the correct GPU.
The game crashes during a match Update the driver, test shader settings, enable GPU Debug Mode, and collect diagnostics if it repeats.
A short hitch occurs when a map or material appears for the first time Allow shader compilation to finish and distinguish the one-time hitch from recurring stutter.
Stutter continues throughout matches Check GPU selection, RAM pressure, CPU/GPU limits, shader settings, drivers, and the official optimization test.
“Out of Video Memory” appears at startup on a 13th- or 14th-generation Intel CPU Update the motherboard or system BIOS using the manufacturer’s instructions, then contact the manufacturer, Intel, or the point of purchase if instability remains.

1. Check Marvel Rivals’ published PC requirements

The published baseline is:

  • Operating system: Windows 10 64-bit version 1909 or newer
  • API: DirectX 12
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Storage: 70 GB available space
  • Minimum CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
  • Minimum GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 580, or Intel Arc A380
  • Recommended CPU: Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X
  • Recommended GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2060 Super, AMD RX 5700-XT, or Intel Arc A750

The Steam listing also recommends installing the game on an SSD. These are published targets, not a guarantee that every system at or above them will be perfectly stable. A computer close to the minimum can launch the game but still experience uneven frame times, shader hitches, or memory pressure, particularly when background applications are using RAM.

Do not treat a hardware upgrade as the first fix unless your system is below the requirements or testing shows a sustained hardware limitation. A new GPU, more RAM, or an SSD will not repair corrupted files, a bad driver installation, shader-cache problems, or security software blocking the executable.

2. Restart, update, and verify the installation

Before changing advanced settings:

  1. Restart Windows rather than only closing and reopening the launcher.
  2. Install pending Windows updates.
  3. Install the current graphics driver for your installed NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU.
  4. Restart again after the driver installation.

Marvel Rivals recommends a clean graphics-driver installation when crashes or stutter continue. Use the clean-install option in the driver installer where available, and avoid installing a driver intended for a different GPU.

Verify Steam files

For the Steam version, open:

Library > right-click Marvel Rivals > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

File verification is especially worthwhile after an interrupted update, a failed download, missing textures, or an antivirus quarantine event. Steam notes that some files can fail verification because they are local configuration files. That result alone does not prove that the repair failed.

If you use Epic Games or the standalone launcher, use its equivalent repair or verification function. Do not delete Pak files or arbitrary folders as a substitute for the launcher’s supported repair process.

3. Force the game to use the discrete GPU

On a desktop with more than one graphics adapter—or on a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics—Windows may assign the game to the wrong GPU. Marvel Rivals’ recommended Windows path is:

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Add the Marvel Rivals executable if it is not listed.
  3. Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.

On a laptop, confirm that “High performance” points to the discrete GPU rather than the integrated processor. Test while connected to AC power, because some laptop power profiles restrict GPU performance on battery. This is a diagnostic check, not a guarantee that every laptop issue is caused by GPU selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After changing the setting, completely close and relaunch the game. If the game was already running, the new assignment may not take effect until the next launch.

4. Decide whether the stutter is shader compilation

A brief hitch when the game first renders a new map, material, effect, or version-specific shader can be normal shader compilation. The same can happen after a graphics-driver update or game patch because the existing shader cache may no longer match the new code. The useful distinction is:

  • Likely one-time compilation: a short hitch the first time an effect appears, followed by smoother repeats.
  • Recurring performance trouble: stutter on the same scene every time, worsening frame times, frozen visuals, crashes, or memory errors.

Do not judge a shader-cache change solely by its first launch. Clearing or rebuilding the cache can cause temporary stutter while shaders are compiled again.

Test Switch Shader Compilation Mode

Marvel Rivals includes Switch Shader Compilation Mode, which is intended to reduce memory use and crashes associated with excessive RAM use. The developer specifically describes it as potentially useful for systems with 16 GB RAM or less, where memory pressure can contribute to severe frame drops, frozen visuals, and memory-shortage crashes.

  • [MAXIMUM DUAL-CHANNEL POWER] Installing this matched pair activates dual-channel architecture, doubling your memory bandwidth. This dramatically increases frame rates in CPU-intensive games and cuts down rendering times for creators.
  • [BROAD COMPATIBILITY & DIY INSTALL] Engineered to work flawlessly with major Intel and AMD motherboards. Easy push-to-install design for 288-pin desktop slots. (Friendly Reminder: These are Desktop UDIMMs. Not compatible with laptops. Default speed without XMP enabled will be 2133MHz/2400MHz/2666MHz depending on your system).

Enable it in the game’s graphics or related settings, then test a repeatable situation—such as the same practice range area or several matches—rather than changing several options at once. The developer warns that the first rendering of materials may produce a short stutter or temporary visual abnormality.

This option is not universally better. Systems with six or fewer CPU threads may experience additional stutter when Switch Shader Compilation Mode and AMD FSR3 Frame Generation are enabled together. Test the shader mode and frame generation separately so you know which change helped or hurt.

Consider RAM only after checking memory pressure

If Windows is regularly close to exhausting physical memory while Marvel Rivals is running, closing browsers and overlays may reveal whether RAM pressure is the immediate cause. A 32GB RAM upgrade kit can be a sensible consideration for a compatible 16GB system that also runs demanding background software, but it is not a guaranteed Marvel Rivals crash fix.

Before buying, check the motherboard or laptop manual for the supported DDR generation, memory speed, maximum capacity, number of slots, and whether the existing modules should be replaced or matched. A DDR4 kit is not compatible with a DDR5-only system, and laptop memory may use a different form factor from desktop DIMMs.

5. Test Marvel Rivals’ official PC performance-optimization feature

Marvel Rivals announced an optional PC In-Game Performance Optimization test in March 2026. It targets CPU-rendering performance on systems with more powerful CPUs. When the feature is available to your client:

  1. Open the game’s Settings.
  2. Go to Other.
  3. Activate the performance-optimization test.
  4. Allow its download to complete.
  5. Restart the game so the optimization can apply.

Treat this as an official test feature, not a guaranteed fix or a permanent production setting. Record your frame-time and crash behavior before and after enabling it. If the new behavior is worse, revert the test setting if the client provides that option and report the result.

6. Rebuild the NVIDIA shader cache if the issue began after an update

Marvel Rivals’ GPU Debug Mode guidance documents the following cache procedure for NVIDIA systems:

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and disable Shader Cache Size.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Delete the DXCache folder under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowNVIDIAPerDriverVersion.
  4. Re-enable shader caching in NVIDIA Control Panel.
  5. Restart Windows again.
  6. Launch Marvel Rivals and test.

This is specifically documented for NVIDIA graphics. Do not apply the NVIDIA folder procedure to AMD or Intel systems. The first run afterward may hitch while the game compiles shaders again; allow the test to continue long enough to distinguish that expected rebuild from a recurring crash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Investigate repeated GPU crashes with diagnostic tools

If Marvel Rivals reports a GPU crash or repeatedly closes during play, enable the launcher’s GPU Debug Mode. The mode collects crash information useful for stability diagnosis, but it may reduce performance. Use it to reproduce the problem and gather evidence, not as a permanent performance setting.

For a more complete report, use the official Client Diagnostic Tool:

  1. Close Marvel Rivals.
  2. Browse to the local game files.
  3. Run client_diagnose.exe.
  4. Click Analyze.
  5. Submit the generated diagnose_yyyy_mm_dd_xx_xx_xx.zip through the official Marvel Rivals Discord or support channel.

Include the exact error message and explain whether the failure happened at launch, during matchmaking, or in a match. A reproducible report is much more useful than saying only that the game “keeps crashing.”

8. Follow the Intel BIOS branch only for the documented error

For a 13th- or 14th-generation Intel CPU that displays an Out of Video Memory crash at startup, Marvel Rivals recommends updating the motherboard or system BIOS according to the manufacturer’s instructions or Intel guidance.

BIOS updates can be consequential. Identify the exact motherboard or laptop model, use the manufacturer’s instructions, keep the system connected to reliable power, and do not interrupt the update. If instability continues, follow the developer’s escalation path to the system manufacturer, Intel support, or the point of purchase.

This branch does not mean that every Intel crash is caused by BIOS instability. Use it for the documented error and CPU generations, not as a universal remedy for unrelated stutter.

9. Test antivirus and firewall interference safely

Marvel Rivals says antivirus or firewall software can misidentify the game and cause repeated crashes, launch failures, failed match entry, or reconnection failures. Steam also identifies antivirus quarantine as a possible reason for missing executables.

Prefer a narrow, reversible test:

  • Check the antivirus quarantine and restore the Marvel Rivals executable only if you trust the installation source.
  • Add the game’s storage path and MarvelBinariesMarvel-Win64-Shipping.exe to the security software’s exceptions.
  • For Windows Defender Controlled Folder Access, allow the executable.
  • For Windows Firewall, allow the game on the required private and public network profiles.
  • Run one controlled launch or match test, then restore normal protection if the exception did not help.

Do not leave antivirus disabled indefinitely. If temporarily disabling protection is necessary for a controlled comparison, disconnect from unnecessary network activity, test briefly, and turn protection back on immediately afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Decide whether hardware is actually the problem

Hardware becomes a reasonable next step when troubleshooting shows a consistent limitation—not merely because the game crashed once. Consider an upgrade when:

  • the PC is below the published minimum CPU, GPU, RAM, or operating-system requirement;
  • the game is installed on a nearly full or unusually slow drive and loading performance is poor;
  • Windows memory usage is consistently near its limit during play;
  • the GPU is permanently at its performance limit and frame rates—not just frametimes during first-use compilation—remain below your target;
  • other demanding games show the same instability, suggesting a broader system, driver, temperature, or power problem.

If you are moving the game or need more room, a 1TB NVMe SSD may be useful for a compatible system, and the Steam listing recommends an SSD for a better experience. Confirm that the motherboard or laptop has a suitable M.2 slot, or choose the correct SATA drive, and check operating-system support and physical fit. An SSD can improve loading and reduce storage pressure; it should not be advertised as a universal cure for crashes.

If your GPU is below the published minimum or testing confirms sustained GPU-limited performance, compare a GPU for Marvel Rivals against the recommended class rather than buying a specific model solely because of one crash. Check power-supply capacity and connectors, case clearance, cooling, monitor resolution, and the rest of the system. A GPU upgrade does not correct corrupted game files, a faulty driver, or a firewall block.

What to record before contacting support

Make a short incident record:

  • Exact crash message, including whether it says GPU crash or Out of Video Memory
  • Launch, loading-screen, matchmaking, or in-match timing
  • Marvel Rivals version and the date the problem began
  • CPU model, GPU model, installed RAM, Windows version, and graphics-driver version
  • Whether the issue started after a game, Windows, or driver update
  • Whether the game is installed on an SSD and how much free space remains
  • Whether other demanding games crash or stutter
  • Which single change was tested and what happened afterward

For GPU-related failures, reproduce the issue with GPU Debug Mode when practical and attach the Client Diagnostic Tool archive. This gives official support something actionable to compare instead of a list of unrelated tweaks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fixes to avoid as first steps

  • Do not use registry cleaners.
  • Do not add random launch flags copied from unrelated games.
  • Do not delete Pak files or arbitrary folders as an unofficial repair.
  • Do not disable antivirus or firewall protection permanently.
  • Do not change BIOS settings or enable overclocking as a first-line crash fix.
  • Do not assume one NVIDIA driver version is universally best.
  • Do not assume switching between Steam and Epic will fix the problem.
  • Do not label the game as having a universal memory leak without evidence from your specific system.

Frequently Asked Questions

A brief first-use hitch can be shader compilation, especially after a game or graphics-driver update. Test whether the same scene becomes smoother on subsequent renders. Recurring stutter, frozen visuals, or crashes require further troubleshooting.

Why does Marvel Rivals stutter the first time I see a map or effect?

It can contribute to memory pressure on some systems, particularly with demanding background applications. Marvel Rivals recommends testing Switch Shader Compilation Mode on systems with 16GB RAM or less, but upgrading to 32GB is not a guaranteed fix.

Can 16GB of RAM cause Marvel Rivals to crash?

The documented DXCache procedure in Marvel Rivals’ GPU Debug Mode guidance is NVIDIA-specific. Do not use that NVIDIA folder procedure as a generic AMD or Intel repair.

Should I clear the shader cache on AMD or Intel graphics?

If you have a 13th- or 14th-generation Intel CPU, follow the documented branch: update the motherboard or system BIOS using the manufacturer’s instructions. If the problem remains, contact the system manufacturer, Intel support, or the point of purchase.

What should I do if Marvel Rivals says Out of Video Memory at startup?

Not usually by itself. Steam recommends an SSD for a better experience, and it can help with loading and storage constraints, but it will not repair corrupted files, bad drivers, shader-cache issues, or blocked executables.

Will buying an SSD fix Marvel Rivals crashes?

The Bottom Line

Most Marvel Rivals PC problems should first be approached as a version, driver, file-integrity, GPU-selection, shader, or security-software issue. Update and verify the installation, test the correct GPU and shader settings one at a time, and use GPU Debug Mode or client_diagnose.exe for repeatable crashes. Upgrade RAM, storage, or the GPU only when your measurements and published requirements show a genuine hardware limitation.
