Igor Shesterkin scored the first goal by a New York Rangers goaltender in a 5-1 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on October 1, 2026. His unassisted empty-net goal at 17:26 of the third period made him the 18th different NHL goaltender credited with a goal; NHL.com’s historical count stands at 21 goalie goals because some goaltenders scored more than once.
How Shesterkin scored
A Tampa Bay stretch pass deflected into the corner and caromed back toward the crease. Shesterkin skated to the loose puck, dropped to a knee and shot it down the ice. It landed near the high slot and slid inside the left post for an unassisted goal at 17:26 of the third period. He made 24 saves in the Rangers’ 5-1 victory. NHL.com’s game recap records the score and game details; its account of the goal describes the play.
Shesterkin lost sight of the puck as it traveled down the ice. He said, “I didn’t see the puck land so I didn’t know can I celebrate or not,” then described the moment as “Unbelievable feelings.” He waited for the crowd and his teammates to react before celebrating. NHL.com’s October 2 feature includes his account.
How many NHL goalies have scored?
In its October 2026 historical roundup, NHL.com counted 18 different goaltenders credited with 21 goals: 19 in the regular season and two in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The figures count different things: 18 is the number of goaltenders, while 21 is the number of scoring events. Multiple goals by the same goalie account for the difference. NHL.com’s historical roundup gives the tally.

Two ways a goalie can be credited with a goal
Shesterkin scored by shooting directly into Tampa Bay’s empty net. That is one route to a goalie goal, but not the only one: NHL rules can also credit a goalie when he was the last teammate to touch the puck before an opponent accidentally puts it into their own net. That second kind of credit does not mean the goalie shot the puck into the net.
NHL.com’s October 2026 count says 12 goalies scored by shooting into an empty net; Ron Hextall did so twice. The other eight goals in the 21-goal total were credited after an opponent’s own goal. Shesterkin’s was a direct shot. Asked about the distinction from Ilya Sorokin’s goal credited after an opponent put the puck into his own net, Shesterkin said: “This one counts.” NHL.com’s roundup explains the categories, and its feature on Shesterkin reports his comment.

Ron Hextall set the precedent
Ron Hextall became the first goaltender to shoot the puck into the net for a goal, scoring an empty-netter against Boston on December 8, 1987. He later scored in the playoffs; NHL.com identifies him as the only goalie to shoot and score in both the regular season and postseason. Reflecting on Shesterkin’s moment, Hextall said, “I’m happy for guys when they do it,” and, “The Rangers’ reaction last night was pretty cool for Shesterkin, so it’s a neat thing.” NHL.com’s October 2 interview with Hextall covers the milestone and his reaction.
