The game tracks ideological choices through convictions, including Heretical, its Chaos-oriented path. Playing cruelly can shape that direction, but individual ruthless decisions do not automatically define your conviction or guarantee a particular ending.
Can you play as a villain in Rogue Trader?
Yes. As Rogue Trader, your character wields influence over people and events across the Koronus Expanse. The role gives you room to rule harshly, pursue your own interests, or embrace a Chaos-aligned worldview. Owlcat’s launch description calls the Rogue Trader a figure with “a monolith of resources and power,” tasked with spreading the Imperium’s influence across the Expanse (Xbox Wire, December 7, 2023).

That freedom does not mean every cruel act is counted as Heretical. Convictions represent ideological direction, and the game’s choices can award different amounts of conviction points. So a self-serving or brutal decision may fit your character’s villain role-play without necessarily being a Heretical choice.

What does the Heretical path mean?
Heretical is the conviction most directly associated with Chaos. Owlcat Games describes it as closer to Chaos Undivided than to allegiance to one Chaos god, saying: “Heretical conviction is more Chaos Undivided rather than Tzeench” (Owlcat Games). The wording is Owlcat’s; it is not a claim that every Heretical choice serves a single Chaos power.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Rulebook focuses on the Gilead System, allowing you to tell your own stories in a society beset by daemonic invasion and internal corruption
- Character Creation has been streamlined, with a focus on Frameworks. With so many choices of who and what you can play, you’ll want to decide the focus of your game early
- The Factions Chapter is a primer on life in the 41st Millennium, detailing each of the organisations vying for supremacy in the Warp-torn Gilead System

A GameFAQs guide documents choices associated with Heretical conviction and point awards across the game. Its examples include keeping the Blade Shard, allowing Rykad Minoris to become a daemon world, tormenting or killing characters, and directing Nomos toward Heresy (GameFAQs conviction guide). These are plot-specific examples and may spoil story outcomes; the guide is not official game documentation.
Do your choices change the ending?
Choices matter, but one decision should not be treated as a guaranteed route to a specific ending. A community wiki describes endings as dependent on hidden game flags, as well as combinations of quest completion, dialogue and action choices, and conviction rank. Its overview says some Nomos endings are tied to convictions and require relevant quests, guidance through dialogue and actions, and a high rank in the associated conviction (Rogue Trader community wiki). Treat that as orientation rather than a complete, verified trigger list.

What to know about patches and spoilers
Ending details and quest behavior can be affected by updates. The official Steam announcements page lists Hotfix 1.6.1.514, dated July 2026, which fixed cases where Heretical epilogues abruptly ended after certain choices (Rogue Trader Steam announcements). Check the current in-game version and the latest official announcements before relying on version-specific walkthrough advice.
If you want to keep the story unspoiled, choose by character motive rather than consulting a full choice list: decide what your Rogue Trader values, then accept that convictions and endings emerge from a sequence of decisions. If you are pursuing a particular conviction or epilogue, use a guide cautiously and account for its version and spoiler coverage.
