imageio.dll Not Found: Repair the App Without DLL Downloads

Windows may report that imageio.dll was not found, is missing, is corrupted, or could not be loaded when you start an older graphics, imaging, utility, or AI application. Because imageio.dll is reused by different programs, the correct repair depends on the application and the file path involved.

The exact errors you may see

Commonly reported messages include:

  • “This application failed to start because imageio.dll was not found.”
  • “The file imageio.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: imageio.dll. Please install the application again.”
  • “Error loading imageio.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because imageio.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “imageio.dll could not be located.”
  • “The procedure entry point … could not be located in imageio.dll.”
  • “imageio.dll Access Violation.”
  • “imageio.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”

The wording varies by Windows version and by the application’s loader. A “specified module could not be found” error can also mean that imageio.dll exists but a second DLL that it needs is missing.

The 60-second answer

Do not download a loose copy of imageio.dll and place it in System32.

Instead:

  1. Note the name of the application shown in the error.
  2. Find that application’s installation folder and check whether imageio.dll belongs beside its executable or inside a plugin folder.
  3. Use the application’s Repair, Verify files, or Verify integrity option.
  4. If no repair option exists, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer or launcher.
  5. Check Windows Security Protection history if the file disappears again.
  6. Install Visual C++ only if the application or a dependency diagnostic identifies it as required.

This file is not established as a Windows component. Windows does not normally provide imageio.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Why imageio.dll is difficult to identify

The filename is not unique. It has been associated with unrelated applications and plugins, including legacy MetaCreations software, Artipic, Topaz applications, FutureDial Suite, and OpenImageIO format plugins.

A commonly indexed legacy file is described with the internal name imageio and associated with MetaCreations. Public indexes also show old metadata for that file, but the surviving information does not prove that every imageio.dll on a Windows PC came from MetaCreations. A file in an application folder does not identify its publisher by filename alone.

The location is more useful than the basename:

  • C:Program FilesApplication nameimageio.dll usually indicates a private application file.
  • C:Program Files (x86)Application nameimageio.dll commonly indicates a 32-bit application.
  • Application namePlugIns...imageio.dll may be a plugin rather than the application’s main runtime.
  • A copy unexpectedly placed in System32 or SysWOW64 should not be trusted merely because its name matches the error.

A 32-bit legacy DLL cannot substitute for a vendor-specific 64-bit DLL. Likewise, an OpenImageIO plugin with a format-specific name is not interchangeable with a private DLL used by another product.

Fix 1: Repair or verify the application

This is the highest-probability solution when the application previously worked and then began reporting a missing DLL.

Repair from Windows Settings

On Windows 11:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the application that displays the error.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  8. Select Repair.
  9. Start the application again.

Repair normally preserves the application’s data and settings. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only when you understand that it may remove application data.

Windows 10 may show a repair option through Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Select the program, choose Advanced options, and select Repair when available.

Repair from Control Panel

For a traditional desktop program:

  1. Press Windows and type Control Panel.
  2. Open Control Panel.
  3. Select Programs.
  4. Select Programs and Features.
  5. Select the affected application.
  6. Choose Repair or Change on the toolbar.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  9. Launch the application again.

If neither Windows nor the application installer offers repair, uninstall the program and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer, original installation media, or official launcher. Do not copy imageio.dll from another computer unless the developer specifically supplied that procedure and the two installations are the same product and architecture.

Verify files in the application launcher

Some launchers provide Verify files, Verify integrity, or a similar command.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the application’s official launcher.
  2. Open its library or installed-program list.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Open its settings or manage menu.
  5. Choose Verify, Verify files, or Repair.
  6. Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
  7. Start the application without manually moving any DLL files.

If verification restores imageio.dll and the program starts, the installation was incomplete or the file had been damaged. If verification restores it but antivirus removes it again, continue to the security checks below.

Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file

Security software can remove or quarantine an application DLL after an update, reinstall, or scan. Do not immediately disable protection.

Check Microsoft Defender Protection history

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open Windows Security.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent actions involving the affected application or imageio.dll.
  7. Expand an entry to view its path and detection details.

Only restore or allow the file when all of the following are true:

  • The path is inside the legitimate application folder.
  • The application came from its developer or a trusted original installer.
  • The file was restored by the application’s installer or launcher.
  • The vendor can confirm the file is safe when Defender continues to detect it.

Reinstalling from the official application source is safer than restoring an unknown loose DLL. If the file disappears immediately after reinstalling, inspect Protection history, controlled-folder access, third-party antivirus quarantine, cleanup utilities, and the installer log.

Fix 3: Determine whether a dependency is missing

The phrase “specified module could not be found” does not always mean imageio.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found imageio.dll but failed to load a dependent DLL.

First, open the application’s installation folder and confirm whether the reported file exists. If it exists, do not replace it automatically. Instead:

  1. Record the full path of imageio.dll.
  2. Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  3. Run the application’s repair or file verification process.
  4. Review the application’s own log files, if it provides them.
  5. Follow the developer’s dependency instructions.
  6. Install only the runtime and architecture explicitly required by that application.

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable

Some applications require a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable even when the visible error names another DLL. This does not mean imageio.dll is part of Visual C++.

Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the architecture that matches the application:

  • A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • A 64-bit application generally needs the x64 package.
  • A legacy application may require an older redistributable that remains installed side by side with newer packages.

After installing or repairing the required package:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Start the affected application.
  3. If the same error remains, use the application’s repair or reinstall procedure rather than adding DLLs to Windows folders.

If the problem concerns Topaz software, follow its vendor-specific requirements for MSVC, Windows updates, Smart App Control, and hardware. Those requirements do not automatically apply to every application using the same filename.

Enable .NET Framework only when required

Do not enable Windows features at random. If the application’s documentation or installer specifically says that it requires .NET Framework 3.5:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows and type Turn Windows features on or off.
  2. Open the matching Control Panel result.
  3. Expand .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
  4. Select the required component.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Allow Windows to download and install the feature.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.
  8. Run the application again.

Enabling .NET Framework will not normally recreate a private imageio.dll.

Fix 4: Update the application and its drivers

An old application may fail after a Windows update, graphics-driver change, or incomplete application update. First update the application itself through its official launcher or installer.

If the program depends on a graphics, scanner, camera, or other hardware device, check the relevant driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the affected hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Install the offered driver.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test the application.

If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, obtain it from the hardware manufacturer rather than a generic driver website. Use Uninstall device only when the manufacturer’s instructions or a persistent driver fault justify it, and restart before reinstalling the approved driver.

Manually finding the correct driver can mean matching the device model, Windows edition, architecture, and release branch, then repeating the process for several devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns imageio.dll.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Because imageio.dll is an application file rather than an established Windows system file, DISM and SFC are not the first repair. Use them when other Windows programs also show corruption, updates fail, or the problem began after broader system damage.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Try the affected application again.

Microsoft’s System File Checker and DISM guidance explains the results and next steps.

DISM repairs the Windows component store and SFC repairs protected Windows files. They will not normally restore a third-party application DLL. If you repeatedly run these commands without knowing whether Windows components changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies; the free scan shows the issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and the owning application’s official reinstall is still the correct fix for imageio.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check compatibility for legacy software

If the program is old, the missing-DLL message may be only one symptom of a larger compatibility problem.

Before changing compatibility settings:

  1. Confirm that the application installs successfully from its official source.
  2. Use its repair or verification feature.
  3. Check whether the developer provides instructions for modern Windows.
  4. Confirm that the program’s architecture matches the available installer and dependencies.

To try Windows compatibility settings:

  1. Right-click the application’s shortcut or executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose the Windows version recommended by the application documentation.
  6. Select Apply, then OK.
  7. Start the application.

You can also select Run this program as an administrator when the application’s documentation requires it. Do not use administrator mode as a substitute for repairing a damaged installation.

A legacy 32-bit MetaCreations-era file is not a general replacement for a current application’s private DLL. If the original program requires old components that are no longer available, preserve the original installer and application data and contact the developer or system administrator rather than mixing files from unrelated products.

Fix 7: Check the user profile and disk

A per-user failure can result from damaged permissions, profile data, or application settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the application from another Windows account:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Select Other users.
  4. Choose Add account.
  5. Create a temporary local test account.
  6. Sign in to that account.
  7. Start the application, or install it there only if the application supports per-user installation.

If the program works in the new account, repair or recreate the affected application profile rather than copying DLLs into system directories.

If the failure began after a disk problem, cleanup operation, or system change:

  • Check that the application drive is connected and accessible.
  • Confirm that the installation folder has not been moved.
  • Restore the application from a known-good backup when appropriate.
  • Use Windows recovery options if the issue follows a broader system failure.

Microsoft documents these choices in its Windows recovery options guidance.

Why copying imageio.dll to System32 is usually wrong

Avoid downloading imageio.dll from random DLL archive sites. The file may contain malware, belong to a different application, use the wrong architecture, or be an incompatible version. Even a clean file may not fix the missing dependency that caused the loader error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy an application DLL into:

  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64
  • Another application’s directory

Windows uses these folders for system components and shared libraries. Global replacement can create version conflicts and make troubleshooting harder. Restore a private DLL to the exact application directory only through the application’s official installer, repair tool, or launcher verification.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix

Most private application and runtime DLLs do not need registration. regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM or OLE libraries that export DllRegisterServer.

Rank #4

Use it only when the application’s official documentation explicitly instructs you to register that exact file. The command format is:

regsvr32 "C:fullpathimageio.dll"

Run it from an elevated Command Prompt only when directed by the developer. If Windows reports that the entry point cannot be found, the DLL is not self-registering or the wrong binary was supplied. Registration will not repair a missing dependency, wrong architecture, corrupted file, or incomplete installation. Microsoft explains these limitations in its Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check when the error persists

Work through these questions in order:

  1. Which application name appears in the error?
  2. Does imageio.dll exist beside that application or in one of its plugin folders?
  3. Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
  4. Did the problem begin after an update, reinstall, cleanup, antivirus action, or folder move?
  5. Does the application launcher offer file verification?
  6. Does Windows Security show the file in quarantine?
  7. Does the error mention a missing procedure, incompatible binary, or dependent module?
  8. Does the application work under another Windows user profile?
  9. Does reinstalling restore the file only for antivirus to remove it again?
  10. Does the developer specify Visual C++, .NET, a graphics driver, or compatibility settings?

If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or shows 0xc000012f, suspect corruption, an incomplete installation, incompatible architecture, or the wrong binary. That message does not by itself prove that the file is malware.

FAQ

Is imageio.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is an application DLL and is not normally supplied by Windows in System32 or SysWOW64.

Can I download imageio.dll separately?

That is unsafe and usually ineffective. The filename is shared by unrelated products, and a loose download may be malicious or incompatible. Repair or reinstall the owning application from its official source.

Does imageio.dll belong to Visual C++?

Not generally. Visual C++ may be a dependency for a particular application, but imageio.dll itself is not a Visual C++ runtime DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install both x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages?

Install the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit program generally needs x86 even on 64-bit Windows. Install both only when the application documentation or multiple applications require both.

Will SFC restore imageio.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while imageio.dll is a private application file. Use the application’s repair, verification, or reinstall process first.

Why does the error say the specified module cannot be found when the file is present?

A dependent DLL may be missing, damaged, or incompatible. Repair the application and install only the runtime explicitly required by its documentation.

Why did reinstalling fix the error temporarily?

Antivirus software, controlled-folder access, cleanup tools, or an installer problem may be removing the restored file. Check security history and the installer log before reinstalling again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact the application vendor?

Contact the vendor when the official installer repeatedly fails, the verified file is quarantined, the application requires an unavailable legacy dependency, or the vendor must confirm the correct DLL architecture and installation path.
