Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsimagelib.dll errors can appear as “imagelib.dll was not found,” “Cannot find imagelib.dll,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because imagelib.dll was not found.” The correct fix depends on which executable is calling imagelib.dll, because this filename has been used by unrelated applications.
Which fix applies to you
Use the branch that matches the program showing the error:
- An old AOL or America Online program: repair or reinstall that application from its original trusted installer.
- MDT, WDS, or a WinPE boot image: add the matching
WinPE-WDS-Toolspackage to the mounted image, then regenerate the deployment media. - A game or another desktop application: use its launcher repair or file-verification feature, then reinstall the application if necessary.
- The DLL exists but Windows says it is invalid: check the file path, architecture, signature, and dependencies before replacing anything.
- No program is identified: find the calling executable and full DLL path first. Do not download a replacement based only on the filename.
Before making changes, record:
- The exact error text.
- The executable name displayed in the error.
- The full path mentioned in the message or event log.
- Whether the problem began after an application update, ADK update, antivirus event, cleanup, migration, or failed reinstall.
- Whether the affected environment is Windows itself, a normal application, or a mounted WinPE image.
What imagelib.dll is
imagelib.dll is a DLL with the internal name IMAGELIB. It is commonly associated with historical America Online software, but it is not a unique Windows system component. Other unrelated applications and deployment tools have also used the same filename.
That means an AOL-era copy is not a universal replacement. A DLL is loaded by a particular executable from locations such as the application folder, a Windows component directory, or a deployment image. The copy must match the program, architecture, and expected version.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that owns the DLL
This is the safest first repair for an AOL or other desktop application error.
Try the application’s repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
The Repair option normally preserves the program’s settings and user data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
Some older applications provide their own repair utility instead:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Complete the installer and restart Windows.
Reinstall from a trusted source
If repair fails, uninstall and reinstall the owning application:
- Close the application and its launcher.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again using the original vendor media or a trusted official installer.
- Start the program before restoring optional plugins or modified files.
For very old AOL software, a current official installer may not be available. Do not substitute a DLL from a download site. If the original program cannot be obtained from a trusted source, the safest solution may be to stop using that unsupported installation rather than force a mismatched DLL into Windows.
Check whether security software removed it
Antivirus software can quarantine an application file, but quarantine alone does not prove that the file was safe or that antivirus caused the problem.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the application stopped working.
- If an entry names
imagelib.dll, verify its path and owning application. - Restore it only when you trust the application and can confirm the file belongs there.
- Repair or reinstall the application afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection to install a random DLL. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, scan the installer and contact the software vendor.
Fix 2: Repair an MDT, WDS, or WinPE boot image
A documented Microsoft scenario involves imagelib.dll and wdscommonlib.dll being absent from an MDT or WinPE boot image after an ADK update. In this case, copying a DLL into Windows is the wrong repair. The supported component is WinPE-WDS-Tools.
The package must match both:
- The ADK build used to create the image.
- The image architecture, such as x86, Amd64, or Arm64.
Microsoft documents the package requirements in its WinPE optional components reference.
Add WinPE-WDS-Tools to the image
The following example uses an Amd64 image. Change the paths, architecture, language folder, and WIM file to match your environment.
- Install the matching Windows ADK and WinPE add-on from Microsoft.
- Create an empty mount directory, such as
E:mnt. - Open Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment as administrator.
- Mount the boot image:
Dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:"E:DeploymentShareBootLiteTouchPE_multicast_x64.wim" /Index:1 /MountDir:E:mnt
- Add the main optional component:
Dism /Image:"E:mnt" /Add-Package /PackagePath:"C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Assessment and Deployment KitWindows Preinstallation Environmentamd64WinPE_OCsWinPE-WDS-Tools.cab"
- Add the matching language package:
Dism /Image:"E:mnt" /Add-Package /PackagePath:"C:Program Files (x86)Windows Kits10Assessment and Deployment KitWindows Preinstallation Environmentamd64WinPE_OCsen-usWinPE-WDS-Tools_en-us.cab"
- Commit the image and unmount it:
Dism /Unmount-Wim /MountDir:E:mnt /Commit
- Update the MDT deployment share.
- Replace or regenerate the WDS boot image.
- Boot a test machine from the updated media and test multicast deployment.
A successful repair means the WinPE environment loads the WDS or multicast executable without reporting that imagelib.dll or wdscommonlib.dll is missing.
If DISM reports that the package is not applicable, stop and check the ADK build, image architecture, language package, and mounted image index. Do not force a package from another ADK release.
Microsoft provides the ADK installation guidance and the WinPE download information.

Fix 3: Use the application’s verify or repair function
For games and packaged applications, the launcher may detect a missing or damaged imagelib.dll and restore the correct file.
Look for a menu named Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair. The exact buttons vary by launcher, but the process is generally:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Open the library or installed-games list.
- Select the affected application.
- Open its settings or three-dot menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart the launcher and run the program.
If verification does not help, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official installer. Do not copy an AOL-associated file into a game directory, or a game DLL into an AOL or Windows directory.
Fix 4: Check architecture and file properties
A 32-bit application generally needs a compatible 32-bit DLL. A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit build. WinPE optional components must match the image architecture and ADK build.
To inspect the file:
- Browse to the path named in the error.
- Right-click
imagelib.dll. - Select Properties.
- Review the Details and Digital Signatures tabs, if present.
- Check the file’s location and publisher information.
- Compare it with the application’s installation directory.
A file in an unexpected directory, a file with no matching application, or a file whose signature does not match the owning vendor should not be copied into a system folder.
If the message says the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows,” “contains an error,” or produces error 0xc000007b, the file may be corrupt, incompatible, or dependent on another missing library. Replacing it blindly may not resolve the dependency problem.

Sometimes Windows reports imagelib.dll even though the file exists. The actual failure may be a dependency that imagelib.dll cannot load.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the application name, faulting module, exception code, and path.
- Compare the path with the application currently being repaired.
If the error names a second DLL, repair the owning application rather than downloading both files separately. A developer or software vendor may need to inspect the dependency chain with appropriate diagnostic tools.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is involved
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when evidence points to corruption in the Windows image or a mounted Windows image. They are not a substitute for reinstalling an application-owned imagelib.dll.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run the commands separately:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the affected program.
DISM repairs the component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. If DISM cannot find repair files, Microsoft provides an alternative repair-source procedure in its Windows image repair guidance.

Outbyte PC Repair can scan for repair issues and show what it finds, while the repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the owning application remains the definitive fix for an application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Update the application, Windows, or deployment tools
An update may have left an incomplete installation or created a version mismatch.
For a normal application:
- Open the application’s Help, About, or Check for updates menu.
- Install the vendor’s update.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
For Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
For MDT or WDS, update the ADK and WinPE add-on only as a matched set, then rebuild the boot image with matching optional components.
Drivers and Device Manager
A graphics, storage, or network driver is not a default remedy for imagelib.dll. Update a driver only when Device Manager, the event log, or the affected application identifies a driver-related failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a known vendor driver, use the device manufacturer’s official support channel and confirm the driver matches Windows and the system architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional; a driver update is not a replacement for reinstalling the application that owns imagelib.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, repair a damaged application, or make an arbitrary runtime DLL compatible.

The command syntax is:
regsvr32 <Dllname>
If imagelib.dll is an application-support or image-processing library, registration is generally inappropriate. You may see an error saying that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not mean the DLL needs to be downloaded again.
Avoid random DLL downloads and System32 copying
Do not download imagelib.dll from a random DLL site or copy it from another computer. The file may have the wrong:

- Version.
- Architecture.

- Digital signature.
- Installation path.
It may also leave the original application installation damaged. A file that happens to have the right name can still be unusable or unsafe.
Use the official installer or repair mechanism for the application. For WinPE and WDS, use the matching Microsoft ADK and WinPE-WDS-Tools package. Do not copy files from System32, a Windows ISO, or another boot image unless the product documentation specifically supports that operation.
If the error started recently
If the application worked before a recent change, identify that change:
- Application update.
- ADK or MDT update.
- Antivirus quarantine.
- Failed uninstall or reinstall.
- Disk cleanup.
- System migration.
- Windows update.
- Manual file replacement.
If a suitable restore point exists, System Restore can roll back system files, settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, select a restore point from before the failure, and review the affected programs before confirming.
System Restore may not be available and can remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point.
Frequently asked questions
Is imagelib.dll a Windows system file?
Not as a universal Windows component. The filename has been used by AOL-era software, WinPE/WDS tooling, and other unrelated applications. The executable and full path determine which copy is required.
Should I put imagelib.dll in System32?
No. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create an architecture or version mismatch and does not repair the application that requested it.
Is the AOL version the correct replacement?
Only if the calling executable and file path prove that the affected program is the corresponding AOL software. A historical AOL-associated copy cannot repair a WinPE image, game, or unrelated application.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not by default. A missing runtime dependency can cause a program failure, but there is no basis for treating Visual C++ Redistributable as the universal remedy for every imagelib.dll error. Identify the application and dependency first.
Why does the file exist but Windows still report it as missing?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be blocked or corrupt, or the file may have the wrong architecture. Check the application event log and the file’s actual path.
Does regsvr32 imagelib.dll fix the problem?
Usually not. regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs and does not restore or repair arbitrary application libraries.
What information should I provide to support?
Provide the complete error text, calling executable, full DLL path, Windows version and architecture, application version, recent changes, file properties, Event Viewer entry, and antivirus quarantine history. Avoid sending a replacement DLL before the owning product has been identified.
