You may see “This application failed to start because imekrcic.dll was not found,” “The file imekrcic.dll is missing or corrupted,” or “imekrcic.dll could not be loaded.” The imekrcic.dll file belongs to Microsoft Korean IME 2002, a legacy Korean input component that may have been installed with Windows XP-era language support or an Office-era product.
The 60-second answer
Do not download a loose copy of imekrcic.dll and place it in System32 or your application folder. The safest fix is to identify the program showing the error, then repair or reinstall that program and its Korean language component.
Modern Windows uses the current Microsoft Korean IME rather than necessarily using this old filename. If you need Korean input, install Korean from Windows language settings. If only an old application needs the file, reinstalling that application or its Office language component is more likely to work than installing modern Korean support.
Run Windows repair commands only when other Windows components are also failing. imekrcic.dll may belong to an old application or Office component, so SFC cannot always restore it.

What is imekrcic.dll
imekrcic.dll is associated with Microsoft Korean IME 2002. Microsoft describes the Korean Input Method Editor as software for entering Hangul and Hanja. Its historical documentation identifies Korean IME 2002 as an input method used with older Windows versions.
Microsoft’s historical Office update records also list Imekrcic.dll among Korean IME files. Therefore, it should not automatically be treated as a standard current Windows 10 or Windows 11 System32 file.
Known metadata associated with the file includes:
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Description | Microsoft Korean IME 2002 |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Component | Microsoft Korean IME 2002 |
| Historical location | %WINDIR%imeimkr6_1 |
| Typical legacy architecture | 32-bit |
| Legacy version commonly associated with the component | 6.1.2600.2 |
Some download listings advertise a 64-bit 6.2.3959.0 copy. That version does not have independently verified Microsoft package provenance, so do not treat it as an authoritative replacement.
A current 64-bit Windows installation can still run a 32-bit application that requires a 32-bit IME component. Windows architecture and application architecture are not automatically the same.
First, identify what is requesting the file
Before repairing Windows, establish which executable raised the error.
Check the error window
Write down:
- The exact error text
- The application name
- The executable name, if shown
- Whether the error appears during startup, installation, or sign-in
- Whether the problem affects every user or only one Windows profile
If the error appears only when starting one old program, repair that program first. If it appears during an Office application startup, investigate Office and its language components. If several unrelated Windows programs report missing files, broader system corruption becomes more plausible.
Check the file’s location
If a copy of the DLL exists:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check the description, company, file version, and original filename.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- Check whether the signer is Microsoft Corporation.
Do not assume that a file is safe solely because its name is correct. A malicious file can use the same filename. Conversely, an old file is not automatically malware.
Also check whether the affected application is 32-bit:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start the application.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
Some Windows versions identify 32-bit applications with a label such as 32 bit. The more reliable repair remains reinstalling the application that originally supplied the DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely solution when the error names a particular program.
Repair from Windows Settings
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the program that displays the error.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or does not work, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings. Otherwise, uninstall and reinstall the program from its original licensed media or the vendor’s official installation source.
Repair a traditional desktop program
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
For an Office-era installation, use the original Office installation media or the organization’s approved Office deployment source. A current Office repair may not recreate a DLL belonging to an obsolete IME generation.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The program starts without the
imekrcic.dllerror. - Korean input or the application’s multilingual features work as expected.
- The repaired application recreates its own required files in its installation directory.
If the same error returns immediately, the installer may not contain the legacy Korean component, or the application may be incompatible with the current Windows version. Record the application version and contact its publisher before copying files from another computer.
Fix 2: Install Korean language support in Windows
Use this fix when you actually need Korean typing, or when Korean input disappeared after a language change.
Microsoft’s current instructions are:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Choose Add a language.
- Search for and select Korean.
- Select Next.
- Select Install.
After installation, select the language indicator on the taskbar and choose Korean. Test typing in Notepad or another application.
This installs the supported Korean language components and current Microsoft IME. It does not guarantee that Windows will recreate the exact legacy imekrcic.dll filename. If an old application still requests that specific DLL, repair or reinstall the old application as described above.
If the Korean language package will not install:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Try adding Korean again.
Do not use Windows Features or Device Manager as substitutes for installing an IME. IMEs are language components, not hardware drivers, and they are not normally restored by enabling a random Windows feature.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
If the file disappeared immediately after an antivirus scan, it may have been quarantined.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review the detection involving
imekrcic.dll. - Check the detected file path and the application that owned it.
- Do not restore it until the parent application and file location are confirmed as trusted.
If the file came from a legitimate Microsoft or licensed application installation, reinstalling that application is generally safer than restoring an isolated DLL. If you restore a quarantined file, rescan it and test the parent application.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to make the error disappear. If the detection returns after reinstalling the program, contact your administrator or the software publisher and investigate the installation source.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when several Windows files are damaged, Windows features are failing, or the problem began after an interrupted update or storage problem. They are less likely to restore an Office-only or third-party copy of imekrcic.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is processing.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when SFC finishes, then test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a repair source.
Recommended Free Tools
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, restart and test again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the error remains but other Windows features work normally, return to repairing the parent application rather than repeatedly running SFC.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can make diagnosis slower when the real problem is an old application package. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what needs attention, while repairs require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the DLL.
Fix 5: Update Windows and investigate related drivers
imekrcic.dll is not a hardware driver, so updating a display, printer, audio, or chipset driver will not normally replace it. However, if the error began alongside wider hardware or Windows instability, update the affected device separately.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the application again.
Check a device in Device Manager
Use Device Manager only when you also have a device problem:

- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
For a failed update, right-click the device, choose Properties, and review the General tab and Events tab. Do not uninstall random devices to solve an isolated IME error.
Manually hunting through many driver packages is unnecessary when a separate hardware issue is complicating the diagnosis. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, while the full version performs the driver installation; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that requires imekrcic.dll.
Why you should not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
It is intended for DLLs that provide the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. An IME or runtime component may not implement that entry point. Running a command such as:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchregsvr32 imekrcic.dll
can produce an error stating that the module was loaded but DllRegisterServer was not found. It may also register a file in the wrong architecture context without repairing the application that needs it.
Do not register this DLL unless the software publisher specifically instructs you to do so and documents that the file is a COM component. For a missing or corrupted IME file, repair the owning product instead.
Why downloading a replacement DLL is risky
Random DLL download pages can provide:
- The wrong internal version
- The wrong language resources
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file missing required dependencies
- A modified or malicious file
- A DLL that does not belong to the program showing the error
Copying it to System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory can create version conflicts and may leave the original installation broken. It also does not repair missing registry data, language resources, installers, or dependent files.
Use Microsoft’s Windows language settings, the original application installer, approved Office media, Windows Update, and Microsoft repair tools instead.

Consider System Restore when:
- A suitable restore point predates the failure.
- The error began after software removal, cleanup, or a system change.
- Reinstalling the parent application did not help.
- Several Windows components changed at the same time.
To check:
- Open Start.
- Type
Create a restore point. - Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, use Microsoft’s recovery options and back up important data before considering a larger reset or reinstall.
If multiple unrelated DLLs are missing, run a full Windows Security scan and check for disk problems. If the machine is managed by an organization, preserve the error details and involve IT before performing a reset.

What information to collect for support
If the error remains, record:
- The exact error message
- The executable that fails
- The application name and version
- The Windows edition and version
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The full path shown for any existing
imekrcic.dll - The DLL’s Properties and Details values
- Whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file
- The results of DISM and SFC
- What changed immediately before the failure
This information helps determine whether the missing file belongs to Windows, an Office-era IME, or a separate legacy application.
FAQ
Is imekrcic.dll a legitimate Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Korean IME 2002. Its age and legacy filename do not by themselves indicate malware. Verify the file’s path, metadata, digital signature, and parent installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs it part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Do not assume that it is a standard current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. Modern Windows uses current Korean IME components, while imekrcic.dll is associated with a legacy IME generation.
Should I install Korean language support?
Install Korean if you need Korean input. It may restore current Korean typing, but it may not recreate the exact legacy DLL required by an old application.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Legacy metadata commonly associates the component with 32-bit Windows-era software. Some listings advertise a 64-bit version, but that version is not independently verified as an authoritative Microsoft package. Match the application and reinstall its complete component rather than choosing a DLL by filename.
Will SFC restore imekrcic.dll?
Only if the required copy is a Windows-managed protected component. SFC may not restore a DLL installed exclusively by Office or another application.
Can I fix it by registering the DLL?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that implement COM registration. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
When should I contact the application vendor?
Contact the vendor when the error persists after reinstalling the exact program, especially if the program is old, the installer requires a particular Office language component, or the error mentions an entry point or incompatible architecture.
