“The program can’t start because imgdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
If Windows reports that imgdll.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the affected game or application usually needs its original local file restored.

Which fix applies to you

Use the first description that matches what you see:

  • The error names a game or application: Repair or reinstall that program first. This is the most likely solution.
  • The problem began after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring or reinstalling anything.
  • The file exists beside the program but still will not load: Check whether the application is 32-bit, whether a dependency is missing, and whether the file is damaged.
  • The error appeared after moving or restoring an old installation: Return the program to its original folder or reinstall it from complete installation media.
  • A different error now names MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME: Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable architecture required by that application.
  • The error names d3dx, XInput, or XAudio: Repair the separate DirectX component rather than searching for another copy of imgdll.dll.
  • Windows itself has broader problems: Run DISM and SFC after repairing the application.
  • The file appeared in a suspicious folder: Scan the computer instead of restoring that copy.

What imgdll.dll is

imgdll.dll is an old third-party Win32 image-processing library called ImgDLL. Historical references associate it with Smaller Animals Software and describe support for image formats including JPG, BMP, TIFF, and PNG.

It is not a standard Windows component, Microsoft runtime, or Windows-protected system DLL. Public file records identify it as a 32-bit x86 library. It is normally used from the folder of an older program rather than from C:WindowsSystem32.

Known applications associated with ImgDLL include older Egosoft games such as X2: The Threat, X3: Reunion, and X3: Terran Conflict. It has also been associated with Mamut Business Software and other older image-processing programs. This list is not exhaustive.

The filename alone does not prove which program needs it. The application named in the error, the folder containing the file, and the executable that failed are more useful clues.

Start by identifying the parent program

Read the complete error

Note the name of the program shown in the title bar or message. The wording may vary:

  • “The program can’t start because imgdll.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because imgdll.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting imgdll.dll.”
  • “Error loading imgdll.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “imgdll.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that imgdll.dll itself is absent. The file may be present while another library required by it is missing.

Search for the program before searching for the DLL

  1. Press Windows key, type the application or game name, and note its publisher.
  2. Right-click the result and select Open file location.
  3. Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target.
  4. Look in that installation folder for the program’s executable and imgdll.dll.
  5. If the program came from Steam or another launcher, open its library entry and use the launcher’s repair or verification feature.

Do not copy a DLL from another application merely because both folders contain the same filename. Older programs can require different builds or supporting files.

Fix 1: Repair or verify the application

This is the safest and most likely fix because imgdll.dll is an application DLL.

Steam games

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
  4. Select Installed Files.
  5. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  6. Wait for Steam to compare and replace missing or damaged files.
  7. Start the game again from Steam.

If verification reports repaired files and the game starts, the local installation was incomplete or damaged. If the error remains, restart Windows once and try again.

For a game installed through another launcher, look for Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Validate files in that launcher.

Traditional desktop software

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Look for Change, Repair, or Modify.
  5. Follow the repair wizard.
  6. Restart Windows and test the application.

If no repair option is available:

  1. Back up saved games, profiles, templates, and custom files.
  2. Uninstall the affected program from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Reinstall it from the publisher’s original installer, legitimate store, or original installation media.
  5. Apply a patch intended for that exact edition.
  6. Launch the program again.

For older Egosoft games, use the official patch intended for the installed edition and version. Do not apply a patch meant for a different release.

If repair does not work

Check whether the application folder was moved manually. A shortcut can continue pointing to an old location while the program’s supporting DLLs remain elsewhere. Reinstalling to a normal local folder often rebuilds the correct file layout.

Also check whether the program was installed from incomplete media, a damaged backup, or an archive that omitted supporting files. A complete reinstall is more reliable than replacing one DLL.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine an application file. This is possible, but the filename alone does not prove that a quarantined copy is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and select Windows Security.
  2. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving imgdll.dll or the affected application.
  5. Expand the event and review its path, detection name, and source.
  6. If the file clearly came from the trusted application installation, use the available restore option only after confirming the application is legitimate.
  7. Immediately repair or verify the application so the file comes from its proper distribution channel.

The preferred approach is to reinstall or verify the application rather than restore an isolated DLL. Do not add a randomly downloaded DLL to antivirus exclusions.

If Protection history shows a suspicious path, temporary folder, startup location, or unknown program, leave the item quarantined and run a full scan:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Full scan.
  5. Choose Scan now.

Fix 3: Check the 32-bit architecture and file location

Public references identify ImgDLL as a 32-bit Win32 library. A 32-bit application running on 64-bit Windows can normally use an x86 DLL stored in its own program folder. A native 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit DLL as its normal application dependency.

Do not place application files in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those folders are not general-purpose storage for downloaded DLLs. Copying the file there can cause version conflicts, fail to help the original program, and increase DLL hijacking risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the location:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab and choose Open File Location.
  4. Confirm that the executable and its supporting files are together.
  5. If imgdll.dll is elsewhere, repair or reinstall the application instead of copying it manually.

If the program is very old, test its compatibility settings only after restoring the complete installation:

  1. Right-click the program executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open Compatibility.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose an appropriate older Windows version.
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Start the program.

Compatibility mode does not supply missing files. It only helps when the complete program is present but behaves incorrectly on a newer version of Windows.

Fix 4: Determine whether another dependency is missing

A loader message can refer to a dependency of imgdll.dll. Old games and applications may also use separate image, compression, runtime, audio, or graphics libraries.

The next error usually identifies the missing component. Treat it as a separate problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME indicates a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime issue.
  • d3dx, XInput, or XAudio indicates a DirectX component issue.
  • A named application DLL usually means the application installation is incomplete.
  • “Bad image” or “not designed to run on Windows” suggests corruption or an incompatible replacement.

For a Visual C++ error:

  1. Identify whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  2. Download the supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft.
  3. Install the architecture required by the application. A 32-bit program normally needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Test the application again.

For an old DirectX error, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime package appropriate to the application. DirectX packages do not install imgdll.dll; they address separate DirectX components.

Do not assume that installing every runtime will fix the original error. The application’s own repair process remains the correct first step.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They are not a source for the third-party ImgDLL file, so they should not be the first response to an isolated imgdll.dll message.

Use them when you also see symptoms such as Windows features failing, repeated system file errors, broken servicing, or unexplained application failures across multiple programs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to complete.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program again. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not complete repairs, restart Windows and run the commands again from an elevated Command Prompt. Persistent servicing errors may require Windows recovery options or professional support.

Repeatedly running SFC and DISM will not recreate a missing application DLL. If the application still reports imgdll.dll, return to application verification or reinstall the parent program.

If you want help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly guessing and rerunning repairs, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show the problems; its repair functions are available in the full version. Reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for its missing ImgDLL file.

Fix 6: Update drivers only for a driver-specific error

Graphics, sound, and chipset drivers are not normal sources of imgdll.dll. Update a driver only if the error also names a device, driver file, DirectX component, display failure, or sound failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To update through Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, or System devices.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.

For a clean reinstall:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant device category.
  3. Right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
  4. If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Install the driver from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page.

Do not uninstall a working graphics or chipset driver merely because imgdll.dll is missing. Fix the application first.

If manually identifying the correct device driver and matching its hardware revision is taking repeated searches, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; installation and repair features are handled by the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns imgdll.dll.

Do not download or register imgdll.dll blindly

Avoid standalone DLL download pages and unofficial file mirrors. A replacement can contain malware, belong to the wrong application, use the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the program. It may also leave the real problem untouched if a dependency or installation file is missing.

There is no verified current official Smaller Animals download page or supported Microsoft redistributable that installs imgdll.dll. The safe sources are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The affected application’s built-in repair or verification feature.
  • The publisher’s official installer or patch.
  • Original legitimate installation media.
  • The official store or launcher where the program was purchased.
  • Microsoft packages only when the error names a Microsoft runtime or DirectX component.

Does regsvr32 fix it?

Usually, no. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A normal image-processing library does not generally need registration.

If official documentation for the specific application explicitly instructs you to register the file, use the command from an elevated Command Prompt and the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version of regsvr32. Otherwise, do not register it.

If regsvr32 imgdll.dll reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that normally means the DLL is not a self-registering component. It does not mean that copying it to another system folder will help.

When System Restore is appropriate

Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after a known uninstall, update, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Confirm the restore point.
  7. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system settings and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but back up important files first.

If the error returns after restoring the application, perform a clean repair or reinstall instead.

FAQ

Is imgdll.dll part of Windows?

No public Microsoft documentation identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is an old third-party application library associated with ImgDLL and Smaller Animals Software.

Is imgdll.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public references identify it as Win32/x86. The exact build of every copy cannot be inferred from the filename alone, so use the copy supplied with the affected application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program installed it?

Older Egosoft games, including X2 and X3 titles, are known associations. Mamut Business Software and other older applications may also use it. The error message and application folder are the best way to identify the actual owner.

Can I copy imgdll.dll from another computer?

Do not do this by default. The other copy may be from a different application, version, architecture, or installation. Verify or reinstall the affected program instead.

Why does Windows say the file is missing when it is visible?

The file may be in the wrong folder, blocked by antivirus, corrupted, incompatible, or dependent on another missing DLL. “Specified module could not be found” can describe a missing dependency rather than the named file itself.

Will Visual C++ or DirectX install imgdll.dll?

No. Visual C++ installs Microsoft runtime libraries, and DirectX packages install DirectX components. They may resolve a separate error that appears after the ImgDLL problem is repaired, but neither package supplies imgdll.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Keep application DLLs with the application that uses them. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general repair locations for third-party files.

What should I do if the error changes to another missing DLL?

That usually reveals the next missing dependency. Record the new filename, then repair the application or install the specific official Microsoft runtime if the new name identifies Visual C++ or DirectX. Do not download a series of unrelated DLLs one at a time.
